Whether Reed was going to continue playing that role or not in the second round is unclear, but Rivers will have no choice but to shake things up moving forward. Jordan and Millsap's struggles eventually gave Rivers incentive to try out the second-year power forward Paul Reed as a small-ball five. As the Sixers held a quiet competition behind Joel Embiid throughout the final stretch of the 2021-2022 regular season, Doc Rivers favored the veterans DeAndre Jordan and Paul Millsap.

Joel Embiid's injury was totally avoidable, and it could be costly for ... (USA TODAY)

Joel Embiid should have been on the bench in closing minutes of the Sixers' series-clinching win. There's nothing Doc Rivers can say to change that.

During the regular season, the Sixers scored 115.6 points and allowed 107.8 points per 100 possessions with Embiid on the court. When Embiid wasn’t playing, the Sixers scored 107.3 points and allowed 110.8 points per 100 possessions — a significant swing in net rating of more than 10 points per 100 possessions. There is already pressure on the Sixers and Rivers. They haven’t reached the conference finals since 2001. And if Rivers was worried about blowing a lead against the battered Raptors, that's alarming, too. The 76ers pulled away in the third and led 99-78 headed into the fourth. Embiid is already dealing with a torn ligament in his right (shooting) thumb.

76ers injury report: Joel Embiid injury worth monitoring in second ... (DraftKings Nation)

Here's a look at which players are dealing with issues for the 76ers in the second round.

The 76ers will need to shift their offensive scheme to focus it around James Harden, who will have to be a MVP-level player if Embiid is out. He reportedly will not need surgery, but with no timetable to return, it seems unlikely he makes it back for most, if not all, of this series. The Sixers went from looking to be in good shape to losing their best player for potentially the entire series.

Therefore, Embiid's on pace to miss Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals series against the Miami Heat. "I apologized to him after that. I don't think I have anything to say about it." He won, and I think that's on him to celebrate however he wanted. For Sixers star Joel Embiid, he felt good knowing his team was well on its way to advance past the first round when the fourth quarter rolled around. With four minutes left in the game on Thursday, Embiid threw down a big dunk.

“But Embiid is always accident-prone, which is something I’m trying to keep in mind. “This is definitely a huge upset, and compared to what we just went through with Simmons, this just feels like a slap in the face,” Ott said. “Part of me wonders how much of that decision to keep him in was Joel,” Geftman said. Embiid’s injury was the absolute lowest point for the Sixers, even eclipsing the drama over Ben Simmons and his eventual trade, according to Daniel Ott. Fans woke up to the news Saturday with a mixture of anger and disappointment. I have no faith in the Phillies’ bullpen, and thank God hockey is over.”

NBA Rumors: Joel Embiid's Injury Won't Require Surgery (Sports Illustrated)

Last week, the Philadelphia 76ers had an injury scare regarding their star center, Joel Embiid. Following an impressive overtime win in Game 3 in the first.

As ESPN's Ramona Shelburne recently reported, the door isn't closed for Embiid to get on the floor to face the Heat in the second-round series. Therefore, Embiid intended to continue playing through the injury and would get surgery on his thumb in the offseason. While surgery was required, Embiid didn't have to undergo a surgical procedure right away.

Miami Heat: Kyle Lowry injury could loom large vs. Philadelphia 76ers (Sir Charles In Charge)

As all the attention surrounds Joel Embiid's injury, the Miami Heat are also dealing with an injury that could loom large in the series.

The emergence of Tyrese Maxey of James Harden has given the Sixers an element that many didn’t expect them to have at the beginning of the season. Perhaps the winner of this series will be determined by which team gets their star back first, Lowry or Embiid. Without Embiid, the strength of the Sixers flips toward the backcourt.

Doc Rivers lays out Sixers' options, approach without Joel Embiid vs ... (NBC Sports)

With Joel Embiid out indefinitely, Doc Rivers said Saturday the Sixers will use a "center by committee" approach against the Heat. By Noah Levick.

"I don't know," he said. "I did play last series," the good-natured veteran said. "They do one lineup where they put (P.J) Tucker in as a five," he said. We can still be really efficient in that type of way." "I thought Paul was terrific," Rivers said. "There's hope, obviously, but I don't know. That comment does not confirm Reed will start and be the Sixers' primary center, but it does suggest Rivers gained confidence in the 22-year-old. So we just have to be very smart with how we plan our bigs." He defended the inbounds pass on Toronto's final overtime play in Game 3. "I thought the adjustment in Game 6 for Paul helped him -- because we were trying to figure out the best way to help him. "We may need all four guys," Rivers said. Rivers did not rule out Paul Reed, DeAndre Jordan, Charles Bassey and Paul Millsap all appearing in the Sixers' second-round series against the Heat, which starts Monday night in Miami. Bassey, who missed the Toronto series with a right shoulder injury, was a full practice participant and among the Sixers to play in a post-practice scrimmage for low-minute players.

This has been a resilient group all year so nothing has changed in that regard so we’ll prepare the same way and we’ll wait for big fella to get whatever he needs to get back to where he needs to be.” Obviously, he was dealing with the thumb issue since Game 3 and for something to happen like that in a closeout game kinda sucks, but it’s the nature of the beast, it’s the playoffs. We’re gonna space the floor more, we’re gonna play in space more. Whenever that is, we’ll be ready, but at the end of the day, for us, it’s a next man up mentality and just being locked in of the game plan. The bad news, there’s just no timeline for when he’s coming back.” The Sixers will now have a huge challenge as they prepare for this next series without their best player.

Series preview: How will Heat-Sixers turn out with Joel Embiid ... (NBA.com)

There's been no timetable on Joel Embiid's return, but Philadelphia could be in deep trouble if he's unable to suit up.

Butler averaged just 5.3 restricted-area points in three games against the Sixers this season, and he shot just 7-for-31 (23%) from outside the restricted area. The series will begin with a feeling of deflation with Embiid potentially out, and he’ll take the suspense with him. The Sixers are built with him as the centerpiece, and it’s far too late to establish a new identity on the fly, especially this deep into the playoffs and against a team as consistently good as Miami. The shame is Embiid would’ve been the best player in the series by a sizable margin. He was 7-for-16 (44%) from 3-point range in the first round, but just 5-for-18 (28%) from mid-range. In averaging 30.5 points per game ( third in the playoffs) against Atlanta, Butler also scored 6.8 per contest at the free-throw line. That’s why the Heat haven’t suffered enormous setbacks when Duncan Robinson, for example, underachieved this season and struggled (just 2-10 on 3-point shooting the last four games) in the first round.
