What is Eid al-Fitr and how is it being celebrated? (The Independent)

As the holy month of Ramadan comes to an end, Muslims will celebrate Eid al-Fitr for the first time without Covid-19 restrictions since the pandemic began.

Eid-Ul-Adha is considered as the ‘bigger’ Eid celebration, where many Muslims complete their ‘Hajj’ and sacrifice a sheep or goat. Charity is a big part of the Muslim faith and one of the ‘Five Pillars of Islam’, so Eid is another reminder for Muslims around the world, to give even in moments of celebration. Many Muslims celebrate Eid by spending time with their loved ones, making unique dishes for this special day and connecting in prayer to commemorate and acknowledge the end of the fasting month. It’s a means of Muslims making time for worship and becoming closer to God. Ramadan takes place for 29-30 days, during which time Muslims won’t eat or drink between dawn and sunset. However, the precise timings and dates change from country to country, depending on the geographical location.

Sweet festivities: Celebrating Eid al-Fitr, ending Ramadan in Turkey (Daily Sabah)

Ramadan Bayram has arrived once more under the shadow of COVID-19 pandemic, so let's reminisce about what usually happens during these three holy days.

In addition to entertainment elements such as swings, carousels and acrobats, there were also balloonists, whistleblowers, toymakers, and all kinds of food and beverage sellers in the feasts established in some of the city squares and mosque courtyards. Children of high-ranking people, accompanied by their governess, would carry decorated baskets for candy and visit their close relatives, kiss their hands and convey their parents' greetings wherever they went. In addition, they would try to save money for Ramadan by getting pocket money from their parents and saving as much as possible. Everyone looks dazzling as they put on their best and brightest and most recently bought clothes purchased especially for the occasion – and preferably with a fresh haircut. Most children would put these clothes next to their beds at night. Speaking of visiting relatives, bayram is the time of the year when honoring the elderly is of utmost importance. In return, they receive candies, chocolates or even a small amount of money. The celebration of Ramadan Bayram, or the Şeker Bayramı (Feast of Sweets), holds a dear place in the hearts of the Turkish people. The celebrations begin with a special prayer on the morning of the first day. All shall rejoice and feast over these three days as people celebrate the earlier of the two official holidays celebrated within Islam – the other being Qurban Bayram, also known as Eid al-Adha. The bayram falls on the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic calendar; this does not always fall on the same Gregorian day, as the start of any lunar Hijri month varies based on when local religious authorities sight the new moon. Everyone congratulates one another's bayram when they greet each other.
