Tornado Watch

Hail of up to apple size could be part of severe storms expected to move Friday evening across much of Kansas, the National Weather Service said.

The weather service issues a watch when the risk of a hazardous weather or hydrologic event has increased significantly, but its occurrence, location or timing is still uncertain. Power poles were reported snapped in half about 9:45 p.m. by winds one-half mile northwest of Mayetta in Jackson County, the weather service reported. Hail four inches in diameter, or roughly the size of a grapefruit, was reported at 7:45 p.m. at Enterprise, a city of about 700 people in Dickinson County in north-central Kansas. The tornado apparently lifted back up into the air, as subsequently warnings issued by the weather service made no mention of it. An emergency manager reported the twister on the ground one mile east of Wamego, the National Weather Service reported at 8:18 p.m. Power poles were knocked down, apparently by a tornado, one mile south of Wamego, the weather service said.
