Memphis can’t expect Bane and Clarke to carry them to the finish line again but the Grizzlies three-point shooting can not be worse than it was in Game 5. While Bane and Clarke have led the Grizzlies for most of the series, if Memphis is going to close out the series on the road tonight it will need the awakened Ja we saw in the closing minutes of Game 5. Ahead of the series, I predicted the Timberwolves would be a tough out but that Memphis would prevail in six games. Game 6 will be the Grizzlies biggest test yet and to survive and advance, Memphis will need to return to the basics. Ja hitting his patented floaters in Game 5 was a welcome sight and if he is able to resume his paint dominance, Memphis might reestablish itself as the contender it was considered for much of the regular season. If Bane is able to continue his performance tonight and in potential future series, his star will only continue to grow. Minnesota will not go away quietly and the Target Center has proven to be a difficult environment in the playoffs and the Wolves’ play-in game. While there have been mixed results from Anderson and Tillman, Clarke has more than risen to the challenge, averaging 16.4 points, nearly all from the paint. The Grizzlies have averaged 54.4 points in the paint for the series with Ja only scoring 12.4 from up-close. With Jaren averaging 5.2 fouls a game – 8.3 fouls per 36 minutes – for the series, and Steven Adams riding the bench, it has fallen to Kyle Anderson, Xavier Tillman, and Brandon Clarke to hold down the inside. Led by a Ja Morant resurgence, the Grizzlies came back to win after being down as many as 13 with 9:15 to go in the fourth quarter. Jaren Jackson Jr. has been a total no-show for most of the series and Dillon Brooks has struggled offensively.

While Morant failed to find a rhythm for most of the night, he was able to turn it on late with six points and four assists in the fourth quarter. Bane played over 43 minutes in the Game 6 win, and was a plus-22 for the night -- no other Memphis player was better than plus-10. At times, you could even say he was the first guy. You could feel the nervousness from the Target Center crowd through the TV as the Grizzlies cut the Wolves' lead from 10 to four in less than a minute to start the fourth quarter. His late heroics in Game 5 fueled another Memphis comeback, but he was held in check for much of Game 6, as he was in the series. An All-Star in 2022 during his third campaign, Morant averaged 27.4 points per game during the regular season and led the NBA in points in the paint. Like coach [Taylor Jenkins] said in the locker room, 'There's not one way to win in the NBA playoffs.' There are a lot of ways to win and we just figured out one way." For the third time in the series, Memphis on Friday overcame a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter. But it was Morant who commanded the most attention in the series. We knew that every game would be a dogfight, that we had to come in locked in and bring our energy from the start.

O.J. Mayo made 20 shots from behind the arc in 13 playoff games in 2011. One of the most vital players for Minnesota in this series — all season, really — has been Patrick Beverley with his energy, experience and tenacity. That’s already the most in team history for a single postseason. Those are the only two elimination games they’ve ever won at home, having lost in those situations in the first round in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. The Grizzlies have had only one lead after the first quarter in this series, 33-32 in Game 2, and Edwards ensured they didn’t get another one. Grizzlies: Bane has 27 made 3-pointers in the series.

“We’re happy with the result, but we’ve always had a big picture since we’ve been playing with each other. Even when you don’t do what you’re supposed to do, you gotta have the same approach, like even when it’s a good game, you gotta just learn from it.” Knocking off Minnesota in six games rather than seven didn’t buy the victors a thing. In the 18 quarters, one through three, of the six games, the Wolves outscored the Grizzlies 519-490. The starting backcourt remains an issue, with Patrick Beverley past his prime as a full-time starter and irritant, while D’Angelo Russell seemed to shrink when the Wolves needed him most. He made a huge statement in the series.” But he stuck around for more than 34 minutes in the finale, scoring 18 points, grabbing 14 rebounds, sinking three treys and blocking a couple shots. In the six fourth quarters, they got outscored 198-136, including 40-22 in the clincher. Never before in NBA playoff history had a team come back twice to win after trailing by 10 points or more in the fourth quarter. Dillon Brooks scored 23 in the clincher and chased around Anthony Edwards for much of the series. … And defensively taking a lot of tough assignments – switching on the guards, guarding Towns for a good portion of the series.” “If you ask me, the MVP of this series would be this guy here,” Morant said, gesturing at Bane seated next to him.

PROJECTED STARTING LINEUP: Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, Dillon Brooks, Jaren Jackson Jr., Xavier Tillman Sr. PROJECTED KEY ROTATION PLAYERS: Tyus Jones, Kyle ...
Between that and the threat of Curry/Thompson/Poole/Wiggins getting hot offensively, this could be the end of a special season for the Grizzlies. But a funny thing about that - Memphis was able to hold that key #2 seed because of the depth the team possesses. Ja Morant was missed, but Tyus Jones is arguably the best back-up point guard in the NBA. Steven Adams matters a lot to this Memphis team, but the Grizzlies have Brandon Clarke, Kyle Anderson, and Xavier Tillman Sr. to fill that front court void. Ja struggled (-4.3 in 3 games against the Warriors this season) with Golden State but has dominated them in the past, and Bane was a strong +15.6 over the Warriors. They can’t defend everyone. They have players that have done this before, literally when current members of the Memphis Grizzlies were in high school. He lives in the midrange and three point territory, meaning that he is not a threat to get to the rim and attack the paint, like Karl-Anthony Towns could do off the dribble to Adams or even Patrick Beverley to Ja Morant. He is predictable. Playing Adams (once he gets out of protocols) makes sense - Morant missed the type of screens “Steve-O” set (led the NBA in screen assists) and the Grizzlies missed his rebounding prowess (led the NBA in offensive rebounds). Adams was strong in three games against Golden State this season, a +7.2 in 3 games played against the Warriors per basketball-reference.com. He played 65 minutes at that rate. The Warriors are the favorites in terms of betting at least - on DraftKings Golden State is -260 to take the series. The prediction here was Grizzlies in 5, but the struggles of Ja Morant (who had issues scoring consistently outside of Game 5 but impacted the series in other major ways through his passing and rebounding) and Jaren Jackson Jr. (fouls specifically) plus the impressive execution of game plan by Minnesota made that result get delayed a game. In fact, they did make (and lost) the Finals that year, and each of the last five times Golden State made the playoffs they got to the NBA Finals. Some things have changed of course - Kevin Durant and others aren’t around anymore, the Big Three of Curry/Thompson/Green are a few years older. And the Grizzlies need to consider going back to what they were before the Timberwolves forced a hard turn. For the first time since 2015, the Memphis Grizzlies closed out a playoff series with a win when they defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 6 of their first round NBA Playoff series.
The Grizzlies now face a monumental task in Round 2: dethrone a head coach and a veteran core group that's beyond playoff tested— they're championship tested.
The Memphis Grizzlies are going to have to put aside any nerves and doubt and stay focused on the mission of winning one possession at a time. Steven Adams and Kyle Anderson are the only players on the team’s roster that were in the NBA the first time the Warriors won a championship. While the Warriors were winning their first chip together, most of the league’s second-youngest team were in middle school and junior high school— probably watching in awe of these very Warriors like the rest of the NBA was doing in the summer of 2015.
Will it be the Grizzlies or Warriors in the 2022 Western Conference Finals? Place your vote here.
So, which of these teams will advance to the 2022 Western Conference Finals? We want to know what you think. Curry and Thompson combined to average 50.6 in the opening round and vastly improved Jordan Poole (21.6 PPG) continued to add a potent third offensive option. He’ll need to provide steadier production in the second round. Morant had ups and downs in the series, averaging a subpar (by his standards) 21.5 PPG and 4.2 turnovers. They needed to stage major, and sometimes unlikely, comebacks to take care of the Timberwolves. They rallied from a 26-point deficit in Game 3 and needed a last-second Ja Morant layup to take Game 5. Brandon Clarke played a huge role off the bench against Minnesota but the Grizzlies will need more from Jaren Jackson Jr. (11.8 PPG, 7.2 RPG). The X factor could be center Steven Adams, who entered health and safety protocols prior to Game 6.
