Ole Miss' Matt Corral Falls Out of First Round of NFL Draft (Wolverine Maven)

The Rebel quarterback was not taken in the first 32 picks of the 2022 draft on Thursday night.

At the end of the day, you're going to end up where you're going to end up, and you might as well be yourself and have a team fall in love with who you really are." He did, however, go through drills at the Ole Miss Pro Day in front of representatives from 31 of the NFL's 32 teams. Corral's draft stock fluctuated widely during the lead up to Thursday night with some mock drafts having him in the first round and others well into the second.

NFL Draft | Which team will pick Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral ... (247Sports)

Matt Corral was disappointed that he did not hear his name called in Thursday night's first round of the NFL Draft. He said so himself.

The draft will be on a variety of networks. Corral has the quick feet to extend plays and is a threat as a runner." Conventional wisdom suggests they would have to get Corral with the 35th pick, because he would not likely be around the next time they roll onto the clock. One is the New Orleans Saints who could be looking for their quarterback of the future. Corral, along with Liberty's Malik Willis, Cincinnati's Desmond Ridder and North Carolina's Sam Howell all remain on the board. "Thank you @NFL for giving me the opportunity to even be here, truly a blessing," Corral tweeted late Thursday night from las Vegas, where he was stationed for the draft's opening night.

Howell is far from perfect but he can add verticality to the offense and is a threat with his legs. Cross is a tone setter who can work in the box and on tight ends, which would allow them to replace the retired Malcolm Jenkins. Corral needs a lot of seasoning but he’s got the right mentality and tools. Walker is a mighty back who is excellent at creating for himself and fighting through contact. Rumored to be a potential surprise first rounder, Jackson is a talented athlete whose fit has been muddy since his college days. The team clearly identified a pool of talent they felt good about and knew they’d still get their hands on an impact prospect with a move down the board. Sure seems like the Falcons are poised to roll the dice on a QB at some point on Day 2. Still think it makes plenty of sense for a Titans team that apparently wants to cut payroll and has an aging QB with a chunky cap hit. Logan Hall can join the rotation immediately and might be reminiscent of a more dynamic William Gholston with time. The Seahawks need to swing on a signal caller, so it’s one of Willis, Sam Howell or Matt Corral here. It couldn’t go off the rails because it was never on rails to begin with. No trades this time, I think we can agree that’s a fruitless exercise at this point.

Ole Miss Rebels Selected in Sports Illustrated's Day Two Mock Draft (Yardbarker)

The first round of the 2022 NFL Draft has come and gone, but there is still plenty of talent left on the board. There were no Ole Miss Rebels drafted.

He’d like the team to remain competitive as much as they can, as they try and retool here, but I would argue that given some of the contracts, given the vets that they have, that you take a look at these last three seasons and you see they’re sort of in the NHL’s no man’s land. "But, I’m curious to see who that GM ends up being, because in this case, they’re going to obviously chart a new course forward for the Sharks, but I also wonder how their view of the franchise and how things move forward meshes with their owner Hasso Plattner, someone who’s a bit hands off, but the expectation is behind the scenes that Plattner is not necessarily someone that believes in a teardown rebuild. "But, you take a look at that triumvirate of really tenured defensemen that they have on their blueline, including Brent Burns, Erik Karlsson and Marc-Edouard Vlasic, and I look at that and I say, ‘This is a lot of money to spend on three guys on your blueline, all of whom are getting up there in years’. But you look at the season that Burns has had, actually a bit of a bounce-back year, he’s been pretty good. With an aging core that is also taking up a lot of cap space, it’s hard to see how the Sharks can pull themselves out of this in the short term. Anything other than a Washington win over the Rangers coupled with the Penguins suffering a regulation loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets at home on Friday would result in the Capitals playing against the top-seeded Florida Panthers in the opening round of the playoffs. The Capitals would face the Rangers in the first round if they manage to finish third in the division standings. It was said earlier on Friday that Washington Capitals superstar captain Alex Ovechkin was considered a game-time decision for the regular-season finale at the New York Rangers, due to the unspecified upper-body injury he suffered last Sunday that kept him out of losses to the New York Islanders on Tuesday and Thursday. Washington didn't need that long to make the call. A cap hit in the $4M neighborhood seems likely for Kessel on a one- or two-year deal, nut it could of course be lower if he opts to take a discount to join a cap-strapped contender. A similarly extra-large team with unusual defensive versatility, the Celtics took to the second half of the regular season with a machine-like game-to-game destructiveness that the Bucks are more than familiar with. It was reported on Wednesday that the "G-Men" could not only be making their decision on Jones' fifth-year option before next Monday's deadline for 2019 first-round draft selections, but also prior to the commencement of Thursday night's NFL Draft. Injuries and inconsistent play have resulted in the former sixth overall pick being limited to 38 games (37 starts) over his first three seasons, during which he's gone 12-25. Brown played in 16 games for the second straight year and ended 2021 second on the team only to All-Pro tight end Mark Andrews in targets (146), receptions (91), receiving yards (1,008) and receiving touchdowns (six). The 24-year-old's targets, receptions and receiving yards totals were all career highs and he was on the field for 924 offensive snaps (80 percent), which were also the most of his young NFL journey. And then after my third year, leading up to the end of the season, you know, he wasn’t playing.

I was raised with two older brothers, and it was like 'toughen up.' He completed 67.9 percent of his passes last year for 3,349 yards and 20 touchdowns.

It was the latter of these projections that proved to be most accurate, however, as Corral's name was called with the No. 94 overall pick by the Carolina Panthers in the third round.

The Carolina Panthers traded up to select quarterback Matt Corral with the No. 94 overall pick on Friday during the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Ideal for the RPO game, Corral boasts a quick trigger and excellent athleticism. In his final season in Oxford, he completed 67.9% of 386 attempts for 3,349 yards with 20 touchdowns and just five interceptions -- nine fewer than his previous season. Sam Darnold is currently atop a shaky Carolina depth chart as head coach Matt Rhule continues to reach for a franchise quarterback heading into his third season at the Panthers helm. The Ole Miss product spent two seasons as a full-time starter, surpassing the 3,300-yard passing mark in each campaign. He earned second-team All-SEC honors in 2021. The 6-foot-1 QB is a bit undersized, but with a bulldog mentality, he fearlessly runs into harm's way to make plays.

Matt Corral felt an immediate "comfort" with Panthers (Panthers.com)

The Ole Miss quarterback was drafted in the third round, and thinks he fits well with what's here.

I had a chance to talk to them, and I had the chance at Ole Miss to talk to some kids that I recruited, and there is not one of them that wouldn't say, 'Hey, your whole team is going to love him.' And because of what they learned about him during the pre-draft process, they were willing to make a move to get him. There is a lot of pressure. There is a lot of stress. They traded next year's third-rounder, and this year's fourth-rounder to New England to move up to the 94th spot to get him. They want to give Corral the chance to come in, get established in a new place, and learn the league. "There was some confusion and they needed him to throw to the running backs," Rhule recalled. And partly, that was because they were willing to call him on being uncomfortable, and they were honest with him. His teammates, his running backs, need him to throw drills to them. One of the benefits in my life is when I go into some of these schools, there are kids that I recruited. Just talking about life, and his experience and my experience, and really just chopping it up that way, getting real personal," Corral recalled. Him understanding I was already nervous and calling me out on it was kind of comforting.

“The Panthers weren’t in position to catch a falling Ridder or Willis with their limited draft capital but Corral fell into their range to trade up here. “The Panthers didn’t force a quarterback and their patience pays off. Corral should have been off the board a long time ago, and bargains at quarterback are hard to come by most years.” “Like every other quarterback in the class not named Kenny Pickett, Corral’s star fell much further than expected. Ickey Ekwonu was a home-run selection with the No. 6 pick. His 2021 campaign left a lot to be desired in some aspects, but some of that had to do with injury.

Grading the Panthers third-round pick of Matt Corral (Panthers.com)

See what media outlets had to say about Carolina's Friday draft action.

The Panthers didn't force a quarterback and their patience pays off. His 2021 campaign left a lot to be desired in some aspects, but some of that had to do with injury. The Panthers weren't in position to catch a falling Ridder or Willis with their limited draft capital but Corral fell into their range to trade up here. And when you don't have a guy, you should be taking swings like this. Ickey Ekwonu was a home-run selection with the No. 6 pick. The quarterback bulked up to 212 for the combine. How much he actually carries when he's in playing shape is unknown, but his ability to take a pounding should come into question since he started for only one fully healthy season while suffering rib and ankle injuries in 2019 and '21. Corral put up numbers, but his production won't necessarily translate to the pros. The quarterback completed 69 percent of his passes for 6,686 yards and 49 touchdowns, not including the 15 rushing touchdowns he scored, against the highest level of collegiate competition. While off-field concerns might have contributed to Corral's fall in the draft, he's a potential future starter with a quick release and movement skills. No one can deny what Corral did in the SEC over the last two seasons. This is good value for Carolina. Corral's ball-placement issues were a major concern.

If he is, however, to step up to the plate, Corral will need to iron out a few kinks. Heck, Baker Mayfield’s got all of that and his career is in purgatory at the moment. His confidence, his poise and his drive may very well end up giving the Panthers something they haven’t had under center since the first go-round of Cam Newton—an unquestioned leader. If you’ve followed along with what head coach Matt Rhule drools over in a quarterback, you’d know—perhaps above all—that it’s the ability to read and react at a quick pace. And with that selection, they handed McAdoo a bat—a 6-foot-2, 212-pound piece of lumber named Matt Corral. But excuse us if we think Carolina might have their quarterback of the future now on deck.

Learn the system from the ground up with Ben (McAdoo) and whenever that time is that he is ready to play, he will get his opportunity. Secondly, was my position in the draft status and being able to actually give myself an opportunity to display my talents. As soon as that injury happened, I grabbed my ankle and just felt the pain and my first reaction was my family. "I think you look at guys who play at that level, this is a young man who has been a five star recruit, played at some of the best programs in California. Came to Ole Miss, elevated them to levels that they haven’t been at, played in the SEC, played against decorated programs. Like the best players will play and we will do our best to have no agendas. With other quarterbacks such as Sam Howell (North Carolina) and Bailey Zappe (Western Kentucky) still on the board, they could have waited to take one of those guys in the fourth. No one wants to give up their job in this league so he’s not walking in Day 1 and he’s the starter. When hit with the question of how the competition at quarterback will go, Rhule was quick to tab Sam Darnold as the starting quarterback. But in a perfect world, Matt coming from a dynamic, fun, spread offense that he was in with (Ole Miss Head) Coach (Lane) Kiffin, with Jeff Lebby, coming to the National Football League, the differences in the game, it’s going to take some time. Getting a quarterback on a rookie contract that you can develop and build a team around is the most ideal situation but it doesn't always work out that way. I think we did not want to move 1 and 2. Unfortunately for them, they were not comfortable paying as much as the Panthers wanted them to which was likely the entire $18 million, or very close to it.

4 major observations from the Carolina Panthers drafting Matt Corral (Cat Crave)

What were some of the main observations that can be taken from the Carolina Panthers trading up to land quarterback Matt Corrall at No. 94 overall?

Carolina had to emerge from Day 2 with somebody. Whether he can beat out the USC product or not is debatable initially, but there is nothing to suggest he cannot become the Panthers‘ starter with a little more refinement. Corral was expected by many to be one of the first names called on Day 2.

"I was a fan of coach McAdoo when I finally got to meet him and spend time with him when we were eating lunch," Corral said, via the Panthers' official website. You need to be that ultimate servant leader to where you got the whole team behind you. Corral is also just one of five college quarterbacks since 2000 to register a 3,300-plus passing yard campaign while throwing five or fewer interceptions and rushing for double-digit touchdowns. He has that unreliable behavior off the field and he really, really struggled in some interviews with teams. Ian Rapoport indicated Corral could have been the Panthers' No. 1 quarterback in this class, but that he fell because of off-field issues: The Carolina Panthers selected former Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft with the No. 94 overall pick.
