Packers Day 2 Mock Draft Roundup: Here Come the Pass-Catchers (Sports Illustrated)

The Green Bay Packers own two picks in the second round and one more in the third in the 2022 NFL Draft. Maybe they will select some of these players.

It wasn’t a mock draft but Linsey listed North Dakota State receiver Christian Watson among his “ideal” targets for each of the 32 teams. The third-rounder was spent on Cincinnati receiver Alec Pierce. He was a three-year starter at left tackle and allowed just one sack in 2021. At No. 92 of the third round, he selected UCLA tight end Dulcich. “Having unexpectedly eschewed a pass rusher in Round 1, the Green Bay Packers snag South Alabama WR Jalen Tolbert as a new go-to threat for Aaron Rodgers,” Hodgkinson wrote. “Packers GM Brian Gutekunst mercifully drafts a receiver to attempt to replace the jettisoned Davante Adams,” Froton wrote. The receiver was South Alabama’s Jalen Tolbert. “I was a late bloomer in high school,” Watson said at the Scouting Combine. “I didn’t really shoot up until my junior year. A savvy route runner with natural hands, Tolbert had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons for the Jaguars, and he led the Sun Belt in receptions (82), yards (1,474) and yards per reception (18.0) in 2021.” Watson, whose father was drafted by the Packers, had a predraft visit with the team. Just like that, most of Green Bay’s major needs have been checked off the list. Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Hanson got the message in his Day 2 NFL mock draft.

Let's all laugh some more at the Packers not drafting a first-round ... (For The Win)

I'm still clearing the tears of laughter out of my eyes on Friday morning. The Green Bay Packers traded Davante Adams this offseason. They have Allen Lazard, ...

Fun fact: The last time the Packers drafted a receiver in Round 1? The Packers have a pair of second-round picks, which means they could move up and try to get Christian Watson, George Pickens or Skyy Moore. But this is a team that can’t afford to throw darts on Day 2. The franchise Super Bowl window is open … and who knows if Father Time will catch up with Rodgers in a way that it hasn’t for Tom Brady.

Second-Round Stunner: Packers Trade Up for Christian Watson (Sports Illustrated)

The Green Bay Packers traded both of their second-round picks in a deal with Minnesota to zoom up to No. 34 overall.

“I was a late bloomer in high school,” Watson said at the Scouting Combine. “I didn’t really shoot up until my junior year. It’s a love and a passion,” he said at the Senior Bowl. “My entire family’s life revolves around football. I'm watching Christian thinking, 'This is a guy I can develop. So, I was a late bloomer. Watson uses his hands to get past and stack defensive backs downfield. He added that Watson took a “significant” jump at the Senior Bowl, the premier annual all-star game, to answer level-of-competition questions. Stats: Playing for the run-first Bison, Watson caught 43 passes for 801 yards (18.6 average) and seven touchdowns as a senior. The Packers traded both of their second-round picks, No. 53 and No. 59 overall, to the rival Minnesota Vikings to get their man. He returned two kickoffs for touchdowns as a junior and was a second-team All-American as a senior. At 6-foot-4 and with 4.36 speed in the 40, Watson has traits that defenses must be aware of on every snap. Deeper Stats: According to PFF, he had five drops (10.4 percent), averaged 8.0 YAC and had eight receptions on passes thrown 20-plus yards downfield. He dominated the FCS ranks with a barrage of big plays against overmatched foes.

NFL Draft results 2022: Packers trade up to select WR Christian ... (DraftKings Nation)

North Dakota State WR Christian Watson goes to the Green Bay Packers with the No 34 pick in the 2022 draft.

6’5” receivers don’t grow on trees and there’s certainly potential for Watson to blossom into a deep, 50/50 ball threat down the road. It’ll be tempting for savvy managers in dynasty leagues to scoop him up and stash him if they see the vision for how his career will pan out over the next two or three years. He earned All-Missouri Valley Conference honors, catching 43 passes for 800 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

NFL Draft best available players for Chiefs: David Ojabo, Christian ... (The Athletic)

We put together a list of prospects who could be logical targets for the Chiefs in the second and third rounds.

He has the speed and length to be a quality press-man cornerback in Spagnuolo’s defense. The third round is where the Chiefs should consider adding a running back such as Spiller, who has a nice frame and can be an above-average receiver. As a potential slot receiver, Shakir could be another deep threat for Mahomes. He is also a strong route runner and possible returner on special teams. But his size and speed are skills that should intrigue the Chiefs. He recorded nine pass breakups and three interceptions last season as a press-man cornerback. Brugler believes Spiller has the footwork, patience and vision to become a three-down starter. Robinson has used his skills as a former receiver to become an ascending pass rusher that uses speed to get to the quarterback. It’ll be interesting to see if Pickens can be a deep threat in the NFL to increase his value. Williams would likely be a developmental player who is ready in his second or third year. As another athletic cornerback, Gordon has the ball skills to become a playmaker in the league. Mafe appears to be an ascending prospect who has ideal strength and quickness off the edge. Brugler believes Ojabo has the potential to be a Pro Bowler. He is capable of starting for the Chiefs.
