At 9:32 p.m. the large tornado was 15 miles west of Eureka and being overtaken by a line of storms to the west, eventually diminishing the tornado threat. Such was the case in Andover. On April 26, 1991, an F5 twister, the highest rating possible, roared through parts of the city, killing 17 and injuring 225. Andover Fire Chief Chad Russell said during a news conference early Saturday morning that 50 to 100 buildings were damaged in Sedgwick County.

Russell said no injuries had been reported in Butler County, but a secondary assessment would be conducted Saturday morning. Officials said only a few injuries had been reported. Officials said the suspected twister moved though parts of southeast Wichita and Andover on Friday evening.

We are continuing to evaluate the damage related to the severe weather in southeast Wichita/Sedgwick County. Only minor injuries have been reported at this time. The Butler County Landfill will offer extended hours and will waive fees for debris cleanup related to the tornado/storm event. 11:00 p.m. We’re learning more about the number of structures damaged in Friday evening’s tornado. 11:55 p.m. Gov. Laura Kelly has declared a State of Disaster Emergency for the April 29 tornado.
