Church, diet plan, fatal plane crash: Chrissy Teigen's first docuseries ... (USA TODAY)

"The Way Down" producer Chrissy Teigen says fatal plane crash of church subject forced revisions in her first docuseries.

In an emailed statement, the Remnant Fellowship Church described claims in the docuseries as "false, defamatory accusations from members who have left the church," and says, "The comments made about Gwen Lara are completely false. ... This is why it's so exciting for me to be on the other side of it now and getting to work with this team, because I come from a place of genuine fandom for documentaries." "It was part of the industry," she says. 'If she says it's good, it's good.'" And then Chrissy puts it on her Instagram, and it was insane. She was told "The way to train (her children) is to spank them until they cry, or I'm not spanking them hard enough." They felt that they could speak." I'm praying for it," says Wilson. "Now's the time. They don't have Gwen hovering over them, and in their business..." The team behind HBO Max's "The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin" originally planned (and nearly finished) a four-episode series about the controversial figure. "The Way Down" marks Chrissy Teigen's first docuseries as executive producer. Cappello says producers asked themselves if they felt comfortable proceeding with the docuseries and wondered how their sources would feel.

Chrissy Teigen Producing Scripted Series on Christian Dietician ... (Collider.com)

HBO Max has announced a scripted series adaptation of their hit docuseries The Way Down on religious cult leader Gwen Shamblin Lara is in development.

Originally released in September 2021, The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin quickly became HBO’s most-watched docuseries at that time. Jokes aside, the story is certainly surprising and full of enough twists that it makes sense to want to draw in as many spectators as possible with an A-lister heading the cast. Shamblin and her husband died in a plane crash in early 2021.

Who Is Gwen Shamblin? 5 Things To Know About Christian Diet ... (Hollywood Life)

Gwen Shamblin's journey from Christian diet program founder to controversial religious leader is explored in a fascinating documentary on HBO Max.

The church is accused of being a cult in the documentary due to its alleged controlling nature of its members. Gwen, who was raised in a Church of Christ family, founded the Remnant Fellowship Church in Brentwood, Tennessee in 1999. Gwen, her husband Joe, her son-in-law Brandon Hannah (Elizabeth’s husband), and four other church members were killed in a private plane crash on May 29, 2021. Joe had one child, a daughter, with his ex-girlfriend Natasha Pavlovich, who appears in The Way Down. Gwen got a divorce from David — which many church members viewed as hypocritical — in order to marry Joe in 2018. The program is still active in the wake of her death.

Former member of Gwen Shamblin's religious weight loss cult ... (Daily Mail)

Ex-member of Christian diet guru Gwen Shamblin's weight-loss 'cult' reveals she was left with HOLES in her kidneys from 'starvation' diet that forced her to eat ...

'I know that a lot of you have wondered how I'm doing, and if I'm throwing in the towel,' she says while speaking to her followers over the sound system from seclusion. Mindy recalls the time Shamblin publicly admonished her in front of other churchgoers, when she mentioned a discrepancy in her paycheck that left her with far less money than she was promised. Former members in the docuseries said that Elizabeth lost a son but the event was hush-hush and swept under the rug. After divorcing her husband of 40 years, Shamblin got remarried in 2018 to Joe Lara, a man best known for a 1989 TV movie Tarzan in Manhattan and the 1990s Tarzan TV series. 'When he met Gwen he started to renew his pilot's license because he hadn't flown in seven and a half years until about 2017 when Gwen paid for it,' Natasha Pavlovich, Joe Lara's ex-girlfriend said in the finale of the doc. 'She keeps a list of curses of people that happen to leave the church,' explains Pittman (right), who was pregnant at the time she quit Remnant in 2015. Raised in the ultra-strict Church of Christ, Shamblin was a trained dietician who started her Weigh Down Workshops in the 1980s. 'When he met Gwen he started to renew his pilot's license because he hadn't flown in seven and a half years until about 2017 when Gwen paid for it,' Natasha Pavlovich, Joe Lara's ex-girlfriend said in the finale of the doc. Members of Remnant were constantly told that Shamblin was the voice from God and she shouldn't be questioned. The self-titled book sold over 400,000 copies and Shamblin was seen everywhere from 20/20 to Larry King where she defended her controversial dieting dogma as: 'How, in the Holocaust, did you have all these people getting down real skinny? Laura Alvarez was told that she needed to loose four pounds a week 'in order to be in God's good will.' She was put on a starvation diet which restricted her to just ten bites of food per day and was forced to fast every other month. Now the streaming network is releasing a two-episode coda to The Way Down: God, Greed and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin, which originally aired in October 2021.
