Evan Neal First Alabama Player Selected at 2022 NFL Draft (Bama Maven)

Neal was selected as the No. 7 overall pick in the First Round by the New York Giants.

He has the feet and power to down block as well as the athleticism to pull. His length is great and once he lands his hands, he is able to latch on, move his feet and control opponents. Neal has rare athleticism for his size, possessing quick feet and lower body flexibility to get out of his stance and work to the second level. Neal started 40 games over his three years at Alabama and was selected as one of the team's permanent captains for his 2021 campaign. Neal wasn’t the first pick of the draft or even the first tackle off the board. Neal played left guard during his freshman season in 2019, but was then switched over to right tackle for his sophomore season.

The Giants added another first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft with offensive lineman Evan Neal out of Alabama.

He possesses the physical measurables NFL scouts seek in an offensive tackle, and his tape matches those numbers. Big Blue had its pick of offensive linemen, and Neal was the choice. Alabama star offensive tackle Evan Neal is coming to Big Blue with the seventh pick in the NFL Draft. He should slot in at right tackle, and at 6-foot-7 and 337 pounds, Neal is the ideal bookend to Andrew Thomas.

Weaknesses: Can get a little overanxious at the second level and lunge, and the same is true in pass protection. Occasionally, small speed rushers get the best of him. He will be a long-time starter who goes to a lot of Pro Bowls. Neal's road to the NFL has been forecast for a while. Now, Neal will be charged with protecting quarterback Daniel Jones, presumably as the Giants' starting right tackle in 2022. A year after helping Alabama win the national championship, 6-foot-7, 337-pound offensive tackle Evan Neal has landed with the Giants, going No. 7 overall in Thursday's first round.

The Giants declined to pick up the fifth-year option in Jones' rookie contract earlier Thursday, sources told ESPN. That gives the Giants options with 2020 fourth overall pick Andrew Thomas showing major improvement last season at left tackle. They also signed Mark Glowinski as a free agent to start at right guard and Jon Feliciano to be their center. Neal also brings tremendous versatility to the Giants, having played a season each at guard, right tackle and left tackle. But the Giants didn't believe that was a problem after doing extensive research on Thibodeaux, who has an electric first step. Thibodeaux was one of the draft's biggest names and most debated players.

After selecting one of the best pass rushers in the 2022 NFL draft, the Giants have now also drafted one of the best pass blockers.

This was the Giants’ second pick tonight; they took Kayvon Thibodeaux with the fifth overall pick. Neal was selected with a pick that was originally the Bears’ first-round pick, which the Bears traded to the Giants last year so they could move up in the 2021 first round and draft Justin Fields. After selecting one of the best pass rushers in the 2022 NFL draft, the Giants have now also drafted one of the best pass blockers.

Pros and cons of New York Giants picking Alabama football's Evan ... (Tuscaloosa Magazine)

Who drafted Evan Neal in the 2022 NFL Draft? Here's what the New York Giants can expect after taking the Alabama football offensive lineman.

He's a proven winner, durable and dependable, no matter if he's on the interior or the blindside. Keeping his weight down will allow him to make full use of his athleticism. All of that translates to him being a blocker who can take on pass rushers with speed and strength.

Making the case for and against drafting Alabama OT Evan Neal (Jaguars Wire)

Alabama offensive tackle Evan Neal is one of the four prospects the Jacksonville Jaguars are considering with the first overall pick.

Neal is versatile and could play guard or tackle. He’s one of the most athletic offensive linemen in this year’s class and has experience playing the best competition college football has to offer. However, he came into the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine with an impressive physique that helped quiet those concerns.

Giants add Evan Neal with No. 7 pick in 2022 NFL Draft (New York Post)

The Giants eschewed an offensive linemen with the No. 5 pick. They wouldn't do the same thing at No. 7.

Schoen said the Giants’ medical team signed off on Neal, who had 40 starts in college and never missed a game because of an injury. Schoen said he spoke with three teams interested in trading up to get the Giants’ No. 7 pick and actually had two tentative deals worked out. He had a weight issue when he arrived in college, ballooning up to 390 pounds, but shed that extra bulk and became a technician on the field, overpowering as a run-blocker and difficult to get around as a pass protector. That left the Giants with their choice of Neal, Ickey Ekwonu or Charles Cross, the three top-rated offensive tackles in this draft. Now, he has Neal to move in at right tackle to work as a bookend with Andrew Thomas at left tackle. Clearly, though, Schoen believes he has made significant progress in an area that has befuddled the Giants for nearly a decade.

Evan Neal Scouting Report: 'Well-schooled' (Giants.com)

Read NFL.com's scouting report of former Alabama offensive tackle Evan Neal, the seventh overall choice in the 2022 NFL Draft. OVERVIEW.

Neal's size and athleticism made him one of the top-10 recruits in the country out of IMG Academy in Florida. Alabama coaches wasted no time getting him on the field, starting him in all 13 games at right guard in 2019 en route to an SEC All-Freshman Team selection. Neal moved to right tackle in 2020, leading the team's offense for all 13 games on its way to a CFP National Championship. In his final collegiate season, he was voted a team captain, started 15 games at left tackle, earned AP second-team All-American honors, and was recognized as a first-team All-SEC selection. - Twitchy out of his stance and into his slides.

That’s not a projection; Neal has essentially been a professional offensive lineman for a while now. NFL Comparison: Andrew Whitworth. The recently retired future Hall-of-Famer, selected by the Bengals in the second round of the 2006 (!) draft, spent his career doing all the right things whether he was aligned at guard (early in his career) or left tackle. Neal isn’t the most naturally agile tackle in this class, but given the power he plays with, it’s a more than acceptable balance. There are a few small things Neal could improve in his game, but the NFL team selecting him will have a professional offensive lineman from Day 1. When Neal gets his hands out quickly and decisively, you’re just about done. Neal switched to right tackle in 2020, allowing two sacks and nine total pressures on 789 snaps.

Neal found himself on the ground more than I expected; he bends too much at the waist, and he’s not the most balanced player when forced to move on a lateral plane. In his first season, Neal is expected to line up at right tackle for the Giants, the one position that general manager Joe Schoen really didn't heavily address in free agency last month. He is explosive, with quick feet, excellent power, and strong hands to grip. But the true beauty of this selection is in position versatility. Overall, Evan Neal is a mountain of a man with two redwood trees attached to his torso. But like all rookies, there are still some rough edges to be smoothed out, starting with inconsistent technique.

Breaking Down the Giants' Selection of OT Evan Neal (NYGiantsmaven)

Coach Gene Clemons takes a look at the Giants selection of Alabama offensive tackle Evan Neal and where his strengths lie.

His extensive experience at right tackle means there is no controversy over where the Giants see incumbent left tackle Andrew Thomas playing for this team. Neal steps in as the Giants starting right tackle on Day 1. The only major issue Neal will need to watch is his weight. He will need to monitor his diet to ensure he can play at his best by being in great shape. He knows when to strike with them, and he knows how to use them to snatch up defenders. He has a really good understanding of how to use his hands as weapons.

The Giants feel like they now have a pair of 21-year-olds who may differ in their bark, but still share the same menacing bite.
