After parting ways with two offensive line starters earlier this offseason, the Cowboys added help up front with Tulsa offensive tackle Tyler Smith.

Williams’ penalty woes contributed to the Cowboys letting him walk in free agency. Four-year starter Connor Williams, whom the Cowboys let walk after a penalty-ridden season, signed with the Dolphins in free agency. The Cowboys insisted no position was a “must” to address via the draft, but they entered the weekend with a clear question at left guard.

Cowboys Have 6 Trade Up Targets in NFL Draft? (Sports Illustrated)

The Cowboys are making trade calls. And in the case of a move up, it's not, in the eyes of other teams, just "chum.”

But I still think we’re going to have a great opportunity to really improve our football team, whether it’s at the 24th pick or if we decide to make a move to go up. "We should think out of the box. Said COO Stephen Jones: “(In the) first and second (rounds), it’s a little more thin than we’re used to. The Cowboys are making trade calls. The first level: Mississippi State tackle Charles Cross, USC receiver Drake London and Northern Iowa tackle Trevon Penning, maybe in that order. But at another level - two levels, actually - there may be six targeted prospects.

Cómo Tyler Smith encaja en los planes de la línea ofensiva (Dallas Cowboys)

The Cowboys addressed an immediate need on the offensive line, drafting former Tulsa tackle Tyler Smith at No. 24. How does Smith fit into the O-Line plans?

How 1st-Rounder Tyler Smith Fits Into O-Line Plans (DallasCowboys.com)

The Cowboys addressed an immediate need on the offensive line, drafting former Tulsa tackle Tyler Smith at No. 24. How does Smith fit into the O-Line plans?

Kyle Youmans' Report: As imposing and aggressive of a player in the entire draft class. Smith's exact role is unclear at the moment -- he played exclusively left tackle in college -- but he could start off competing for snaps at left guard. Backup swing tackle is also a question mark because Ty Nsekhe hasn't been re-signed and Terence Steele, a part-time starter at right tackle last year, is now the projected starter after the club released La'el Collins last month.

The Vikings "tried to get WR Jameson Williams in for a visit, [but the] schedule didn’t work out," Wolfson tweeted. Dallas Cowboys select Tyler Smith in NFL Draft: Why it's the perfect ... (SportDFW)

The Dallas Cowboys needed to bring in an offensive linemen if they wanted to compete in 2022 and they picked the best one on their board in Tyler Smith.

But the Cowboys need a guard and the 21-year-old OT is thought to be a plug and play guard. The ultra young Smith offers that to this group. The Dallas Cowboys offensive line was a mess last season. Zeke was 39th in the NFL in true yards per carry so it’s safe to say they didn’t have that either. After starting the season on a red-hot historic pace, the Dallas Cowboys offense cratered last season. Things were getting ugly really fast Thursday night at the 2022 NFL Draft. The Dallas Cowboys went in with hopes high and needs just about everywhere.

Eatman: Tyler Smith Could Be A “Now & Later” Pick (DallasCowboys.com)

The Cowboys found a player who helps them right away at guard, and perhaps at left tackle down the road.

But in the meantime, they just need him to be good, and preferably start at left guard right away. But the Cowboys saw him as a first. But sure, he's not exactly lighting it up right now but if you make a Pro Bowl, I think it qualifies as a good pick. Sure, he was the guy I mocked to the Cowboys on our last seven-round pick on Monday. But that doesn't exactly mean I'm loving this pick. In the last 10 years, only Byron Jones (UCONN) was taken in the first round from a non-Power Five school. What about a pick for the now?

But in 2016 things changed. Since his sixth season, he hasn't started more than 13 games in a season, including missing 14 games in 2020 and six games in 2021. And in the case of a move up, it's not, in the eyes of other teams, just "chum.” But with time come age and injuries. So that comparison to Smith is what will most likely entice Cowboys owner Jerry Jones into deciding to move up in order to get his next left tackle of the future. We know that when it comes to general managers around the league, most are on the road gathering information from scouts and working on who they want to take in the upcoming draft.

The first round of the 2022 NFL Draft is officially in the books, and it didn't go quietly into the night, thanks in large part to the NFC East.

I definitely see myself as a tackle for sure, but I'm willing to move wherever I need to go to mesh with the organization or wherever I am." He's not a player opposing pass rushers enjoy dealing with on a snap-by-snap basis, and his arm length (85th percentile) combines with his wingspan (92nd percentile) to make for a very long day for defenders. A lot of his progress early on will fall on the lap on offensive line coach Joe Philbin, and largely in trying to get Smith to scale down the number of penalties he usually draws per game -- especially on a team that has often believed themselves targeted by NFL officials on holding penalties (something head coach Mike McCarthy benched former starting left guard Connor Williams over in 2021). It appeared the Cowboys were entertaining a trade back when they went on the clock with the 24th-overall pick, and actually were, later admitting there were several teams calling them with interest to move up. Even the Washington Commanders got in on the draft-day trade action, but the Dallas Cowboys decided to stand firm at 24th-overall, having found no player worth trading up for and passing on offers to move down.

"We think he (Tyler Smith) can be our left tackle for a long time at some point in time," Cowboys chief operating officer Stephen Jones said after the club drafted Smith with the 24th overall pick. Perhaps Tyler Smith can win the left guard job as a rookie and start his career there. It doesn't get any better than that, and to be able to learn from them – first team All-Pro for numerous years – it's a blessing to get to work with those guys." "Being able to work with Tyron Smith, Zack Martin, Terence Steele and guys like that, it's a dream come true. He only had 23 starts -- all at left tackle -- in three seasons at Tulsa. Penalties were an issue at times, but the club believes those are correctable with more coaching and more time on task. The Cowboys are in no rush with that projection.

Fixing Flag Issues A Focus For Tyler Smith (DallasCowboys.com)

What a surreal bit of synergy this turned out to be, as the dialogue in 2022 is picking up where 2021 left off: a discussion about penalties.

On the plus side, Smith seems to recognize the work that needs to be done. I feel like working with guys like Tyler Smith and Zack Martin is only going to get me better every day as well," Smith said. He said moments after his selection that playing with a mean streak is his motto as a player. "Those are the ones...you'd rather be dealing with combative one that he can learn from." While Dallas filled a need with an offensive tackle, Eagles, Giants and Commanders all added potential offensive stars.

The Cowboys watched NFC East teams made four picks and three trades before they were on the clock at No. 24.
