He certainly has earned it. Olave finished his high-school career at Mission Hills High School near San Diego, where he landed a three-star prospect rating ...

Really good at tracking long throws; frequently waited until the latest moment to move his hands in position for the grab so as to not give away to a defender when a target was headed his way. - Can he improve his physicality and play strength? - Also did well changing speeds in his routes to help confuse cornerbacks. - Pro Football Focus said Olave avoided two tackles all of 2021 and 10 for his entire career. He's best utilized as a flanker (lines up a yard off the line of scrimmage or in motion before the snap). As a sophomore, Olave had 840 yards and 12 touchdowns to lead the Buckeyes. He then built on that with seven touchdowns in seven games in a Covid-shortened 2020, then stayed in school for his senior year and notched 65 grabs for 936 yards and 13 scores in 2021. He was a Biletnikoff Award finalist and first-team All-Big Ten in each of his final two years and played in three Big Ten Championship Games and three College Football Playoff Games. He leaves Ohio State as the all-time record holder in receiving touchdowns with 35. - Agile feet and nuance made him a very good route-runner. Expect him to be a boom-or-bust option early in his career. - Very good acceleration and speed created problems for opposing defensive backs. Olave pairs well with Michael Thomas, who will draw the other team's best corner and works in a different area of the field. After getting recruited by a number of West Coast schools including UCLA and USC, Olave chose to be a part of a large recruiting class at Ohio State.

Much of that was because receiver Michael Thomas missed the entire season with an ankle injury and quarterback Jameis Winston tore his ACL in Week 8. The Saints have now traded up a staggering 24 times in the past 16 drafts, including their move earlier this month to acquire the 16th pick from the Philadelphia Eagles. New Orleans also holds the 19th pick in Round 1. Receiver was a glaring need for the Saints after they finished 32nd in the NFL in passing offense last year.

Olave dominated during his 2022 NFL Scouting Combine workout, excelling in testing and wowing viewers with his on-field drills, capping an excellent college career that began as a surprise freshman playmaker for the Buckeyes and carried through his final season in Columbus. They obviously didn't think that Olave would be there a few picks later, and that makes sense if you want a lithe, opportunistic receiver who knows how to get ...

He is a scheme-diverse receiver who can play both inside and outside, giving his NFL offense a ton of options in the passing game. He also does not have the catch radius of other options in this class, and there were moments on film where he missed opportunities to high point the football. He then sinks his hips and breaks back towards the sideline, getting a ton of separation on his break. He is a silky-smooth route runner, who can slide into any offensive system and give his play-caller what he needs right out of the box. After all, any good offensive coordinator is going to identify what a receiver does best and find ways to use him on such concepts. Olave contributed immediately as a freshman, both as a receiver and on special teams.

Saints Draft: Grading first-round selection of Chris Olave (Who Dat Dish)

The New Orleans Saints' draft kicked off on Thursday night and the organization held two selections in the first round. They traded up for Chris Olave.

I can’t speak for all Saints fans obviously but this was a solid move for the team. Another thing to consider with any first-round selection is if they fill a position of need and are a good fit for the team drafting them. Maybe parting with a third and fourth-round pick will be seen as giving up too much but as of now, this feels fair.
