The bookmaker's odds suggest that Manchester City and Liverpool are likely to be the two teams contesting the Champions League final. Manchester City have made four changes from their demolition of Watford at the weekend. As talk rages on about where Mahrez will be playing his football next season, he has been given the trust of his manager this evening. This evening's clash has all the hallmarks of a classic Champions League clash. Success is what every footballer craves as a youngster and then when they get their break at the top level. It is unlikely the England regular would have got a look in had Cancelo not been suspended but such is the scenario that he and Guardiola find themselves in. Rematch.— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) April 26, 2022 We are just 20 minutes away from kick off in the first of the two Champions League semi finals. We are just moments away from kick off in Manchester as the two teams make their way out onto the Etihad pitch. That is exactly what Guardiola would have wanted as Mahrez clips a perfect cross into the Real Madrid penalty area where De Bruyne is on hand to bravely nod beyond Thibaut Courtois. Although, they do seem relatively happy to let City control the ball in rather ineffective areas. City have doubled their lead and De Bruyne is once again at the heart of it.

Manchester City vs. Real Madrid bold Champions League ... (CBSSports.com)

As the semifinals begin, is English club success inevitable?

A defense that may have only Craig Dawson as a fit center back will be tested but this is a team that has stood firm at both ends of the pitch in Europe. With the London Stadium at their backs they could well do enough to take control of the tie this week and book their passage back to Seville, where their knockout stage journey began. But, there is something to be said for the remorseless momentum that has gripped this club, where everything is being funneled into their pursuit of continental silverware. if their manager is ready to abandon the possession play he has gravitated to of late. Certainly that's no great surprise in the case of the Champions League where Liverpool and Manchester City have been strides ahead of the field for some time now. Here's one that has been sizzling away in the background for a while, not ready to be unleashed on the world until Barcelona crashed out of the Europa League. Now is the time to boldly declare this bit of Premier League exceptionalism. But, it was in that first half of the second leg that Villarreal seemed to conclude that they would win this tie, their belief not repressed even by Robert Lewandowski's goal. Flip the script of recent Villarreal games and if Klopp needs to tighten things up, he tends to have a top tier midfielder with fresh legs on the bench. Almost certainly not is the answer, an unfortunate one for those of a Villarreal persuasion or indeed those who just want to see a bit of spice in the latter stages of the Champions League. Then again one could have written the exact same thing throughout this competition. Across their Champions League games so far Villarreal have given up 4.85 expected goals and two actual goals in the first half as opposed to 9.73 and nine in the second. As the Belgian has hit top gear in recent weeks he has had something of another Manchester City great to his game. At full pelt Walker should be able to tame the Brazilian. If City do not have their best covering defender at that sort of level, then it might be Vinicius rather than Benzema who does the damage. Real Madrid have not gotten this far because they have been the clearly better team across the entirety of two legs in the previous rounds.

Man City host European heavyweights Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal. City are looking for their first major European trophy ...

Paramount+ will stream the match in English. Casemiro was in the same position, but is only judged fit enough to make the bench. The trio that have seen Madrid to European success in the past has been broken up by the change, but it remains to be seen whether Pep Guardiola can find a way to take advantage. 20 mins from kickoff: With his history in this competition, you'd think that Karim Benzema will have a large part to play in this tie. Valverde has done a good job filling in gaps in the defensive line. He passes the ball across goal for a teammate to get a touch, but Carvajal is in position to clear. It comes to him quickly, and he manages to divert the ball towards the centre of goal, but Carvajal has got himself in the way, and City can't convert. Mahrez showed quick feet in the area to dance through the Madrid defenders, but his shot is just wide of the post. Play pauses as Zinchenko is tripped, but the referee plays advantage, and Bernardo Silva is the quickest thinker in Manchester! He latches onto the loose ball and flashes a shot past Courtois, at the 'keeper's near post. A ball in from the right takes a little flick from Sterling, who came on for Jesus, and Dias stretches for it at the far post. When his side have been in this position in the past, Guardiola has perhaps made one change too many. Karim Benzema has already shown his class in this competition, and his performance against Paris Saint-Germain was eye-catching.

Real Madrid vs Manchester City: Champions League Semi-Final (AS English)

Manchester City hopes to become champions of Europe for the first time as they take on Real Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final.

One key factor that City will need to overcome is Madrid’s striker Karim Benzema, who has scored 39 goals in 40 games this season. Real Madrid has history on its side, but that doesn’t mean Manchester City won’t try to compete with it anyway. We are playing a team who have been here many times, that is why they have this, and we don’t.” Real Madrid haven’t won in three visits to Manchester City and have just one victory in their last six away games with English sides. “History speaks for itself,” said Guardiola. “The history is there and we cannot change it, but it’s 11 vs. Manchester City hopes to become champions of Europe for the first time as they take on Real Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final.

Man City vs. Real Madrid: De Bruyne's fastest Champions League ... (ESPN)

It was a wild Champions League semifinal, but Man City leave Etihad Stadium with the upper hand over Real Madrid. Here are the key talking points.

The one thing City couldn't control was Benzema's brilliance. The 37-year-old started well -- it was his cross which set up Foden's header -- but struggled more as the game wore on. While other world-class midfielders like Luka Modric and Toni Kroos took a while to find their rhythm, De Bruyne scored after just 90 seconds and set up Jesus 10 minutes later. Even after Foden had scored City's third, Aymeric passed up another clear opportunity from Oleksandr Zinchenko's cross. Phil Foden made it 3-1 after 53 minutes, only for Vinicius Junior to hit back again two minutes later. Here are three thoughts on the game.

He was replaced by Fernandinho and Vinicius roasted his fellow Brazilian to score a brilliant individual goal in the second half. With Joao Cancelo suspended and Kyle Walker injured, it was John Stones tasked with keeping Vinicius quiet. He then held his nerve from the penalty spot in style. Manchester City edge Real Madrid in 4-3 thriller but Benzema keeps ... (The Guardian)

Manchester City beat Real Madrid 4-3 in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final but Karim Benzema left everything to play for.

Mahrez had to pass to Foden only to take on the shot – a bad decision – while Foden dragged wide of the far post after a fluent counterattack. In the heat of the moment it was possible to forget that City had actually beaten Spain’s champions-elect, outplaying them for long spells. Laporte and Mahrez missed big chances either side of Silva’s goal but the last word would go to Benzema. The final act had Dias stretching at Real’s far post to meet a cross only to fail to stretch enough. From the rebound Foden shot and Carvajal blocked. Vinícius flickered, Alaba rose to flash a header wide and then Benzema scored with a controlled volley from Ferland Mendy’s cross. Mahrez cut into a seam of space, jinking away from Luka Modric before picking out the late-breaking run of Kevin De Bruyne, who threw himself into the header with Carvajal – and then Thibaut Courtois – flailing. The 13-times winners refuse to lose in this competition. With the referee, Istvan Kovacs, playing a smart advantage, the City midfielder arrowed a shot into the near, top corner and Guardiola could lose himself in delight. This is what City’s quest for a first Champions League does to the man who wants it, maybe needs it, more than anyone else. Guardiola slumped down on to a drinks cooler. He reacted by chasing after the fourth official to earn a yellow card.

Real Madrid are going to need to pull out something special to get back into the match. Mahrez wanted a goal to add to his assist going the other way but he couldn't finish the chance! After an interception in midfield he plays in Mahrez but no one could get onto the end of his cross to make something happen. It's only a matter of time until more subs come in as the energy has been high in the fixture so far. With City in full control at 2-0, and with one goal likely putting Real away comfortably, Riyad Mahrez was sent through down the right. But they ended the 90 minutes with life in a match where they looked lifeless 11 minutes in. But then, with Fernandinho marking him, Vinicius Jr. pulled off one of the solo goals of the season. They made the Real Madrid's defense look silly at times, and a flurry of back-post crosses late on looked sure to result in the fifth, but nothing came of them. Four different players scored for City, with Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva joining the first two, but Pep Guardiola won't be overly thrilled with the result. City won the xG battle, 2.37-1.48, but while the hosts were dominant with five more shots and nearly 20% more possession, it was the chances they missed that will be remembered. City were clearly the better team with the better chances, and anybody who witness that spectacle of soccer has to feel surprised to see Real even with life entering the second leg. In what was an absolutely astonishing 90 minutes of attacking soccer, Manchester City beat Real Madrid in their Champions League semifinal first leg at the Etihad on Tuesday, 4-3.

Foden dazzles on big stage as defiant Real Madrid refuse to admit ... (The Guardian)

Manchester City could have sent the visitors packing in the first hour but Karim Benzema's Panenka sets up Bernabéu return.

Foden scored from Fernandino’s cross then set off on an apparently endless knee slide to the corner, a man who just seems to crave this tournament, to drink in these nights like a sweet hot gust of air. This was an illumination, on a night when the Etihad had felt a little underdone at kick-off, as though the magnitude of this game had snuck up on the place. Real Madrid are a brilliant football team. This was startlingly bad from Madrid, the defence swished aside like the paper saloon doors of a western set. Real Madrid are a terrible football team. Mahrez looked up and curled in a training-ground pass for Kevin De Bruyne to head the ball down and into the corner. And in the end this was a tale of moments – so, so many moments – divvied up between Foden’s early brilliance and the craft of Benzema, the will of those regal meringues. It is simply a case of purring over the details, the beauty of those moments. With two minutes gone Riyad Mahrez took a pass with that special Mahrez swizzle-touch, the touch, a snap of the underside of his boot, and simply veered in through Madrid’s entire left side. With a quarter of an hour gone at the Etihad Stadium, on a night when this entire lighted stage seemed to ripple and shudder, Phil Foden did something lovely. There is no sensible way to read a game like this, or to predict what might come in the second leg. His first touch cushioned it, his second fizzed it the through the middle of the sea of lost souls previously known as the Real Madrid defence.

From a neutral perspective, a 4–3 scoreline is first and foremost an indication of an amazingly fun game, and even Pep Guardiola said that it was “one of the best nights of my life.” However, in spite of coming away with the win, City will have to be the more disappointed team. Instead, Real did what it does so well: It kept its cool, relied on its stars to pick up the slack from its flailing defense, and got just enough lucky bounces to go its way in order to only lose by one. Only two minutes after makeshift right back Fernandinho made that fantastic play for the Foden goal, the Brazilian showed why he’s not a real right back by getting worked by Vinícius, who cooked his countryman and then sprinted half the pitch and scored himself, cutting the margin back to one: Because of their history, Real is immune to nerves, immune to dispiritedness, immune to the idea that a game is ever lost until it’s all the way over. Mahrez had a couple of chances of his own to pour even more misery onto Real’s plate, none better than in the 48th minute, when he broke away from the backline. Though the final counting stats don’t really show a lopsided beating—the hosts had 60 percent possession, but only one more shot on target than Real—City was able to get chance after chance after chance from both sides of the field, while Madrid’s defense struggled to even remain in the same zip code.

The Brazil international remains a key piece for Los Blancos, and at least two of City's goals could have been avoided with his vigilance. The balance that he brings to Real's midfield is inimitable and his presence would certainly have helped to avoid the quickfire efforts which arguably cost the Spanish giants this game, but not the overall tie. Bernardo Silva spectacularly re-established the two-goal cushion entering the final quarter of an hour and then Benzema cut the deficit again from the penalty spot with a sublime panenka. Based on Tuesday's evidence, scoring at least once at Santiago Bernabeu is not beyond Real Madrid. They countered an onslaught from Manchester City impressively to emerge just one goal down after a breathless 4-3 first leg. Real looked a shambles at that point. City go to Madrid a goal to the good in the UEFA Champions League semifinals after a wild opener at Etihad Stadium and it could easily have been over before it even started.

He epitomises the modern day number six, winning back the ball and offloading it to the creative midfielders or even playing through some balls himself. A midfield three of Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne has been a regular occurrence for City this season and rightly so. Onto the first negative point and without a surprise, it is regarding the infuriating number of chances that weren’t taken or went to waste. The Belgian then went on to dictate much of City’s play, adding an assist for Jesus too. Many expected him to score, but certainly not in the fashion he did. The tie kicked off in style with two goals scored in just 11 minutes.
