The Overwatch 2 beta is finally here, but how can you download, install, and begin playing it? Here's an overview of everything you need to know about ...

Regardless of how you obtain access to the Overwatch 2 beta, you'll also need to own the original Overwatch on PC in order to download and install the beta. Therefore, it's a good idea to make sure that you have some extra space available even after you download and install the Overwatch 2 beta. Note that depending on your Battle.net Desktop App download settings, you may need to manually initiate the download of updates if Blizzard deploys any to the beta while it's live. Whereas Overwatch requires 30GB of hard drive space, the Overwatch 2 beta requires 50GB. Before you can download the Overwatch 2 beta, you have to get access to it. There's a second, guaranteed way to get access to the beta as well. The Overwatch 2 beta will also feature the graphical facelift that Overwatch 2 is giving to the original game, enriching the game's environments, characters, and special effects with sharper fidelity, advanced lighting, and more. Even if you don't end up getting an invite to the first beta before it ends, it's very likely that you'll get an invite to future betas. If you signed up to participate in the Overwatch 2 beta ahead of its launch, there's a solid chance that you've been selected to play it. Blizzard has confirmed that in the future, additional betas will include more of the content that will be available when Overwatch 2 releases. Offering fans a taste of what's to come when Overwatch 2 eventually releases in full, the beta represents the start of an exciting new era for Overwatch. And now that the beta is live, players around the world finally have an opportunity to get their hands on the long-awaited sequel to Blizzard's award-winning hero shooter. Since Overwatch 2 is overhauling the Overwatch experience in several significant ways, the team is looking to use the beta to gather feedback on these changes from the Overwatch community.

Overwatch 2 beta includes redesigned scoreboard (Dot Esports)

The long-awaited Overwatch 2 beta is now available for select players, giving fans a small peek at what they can experience in the full game.

From left to right, players can see their team’s ultimate charges, kills, assists, deaths, damage done, and healing done. Now in Overwatch 2, players have access to an abundance of information regarding kills, healing, and more from their allies and enemies. In the base Overwatch game, accessing the scoreboard gave players little more than a look at what players were on fire, how many medals they had, and their own stats.

Overwatch 2 is taking pages from the Valorant playbook (Digital Trends)

The Overwatch 2 PvP beta Twitch drops signify how much Blizzard has changed.

After years of waiting, it is exciting that some players will finally get their hands on Overwatch 2′s PvP beta and hopefully help mold the game with their feedback. Now, the best way to ensure Overwatch 2’s success is to follow the competition during a beta period. Blizzard is fighting from behind to recapture some of the same magic with Overwatch 2, if only for a day. This fear of missing out helped encourage many players to try the game once they finally got access and broke a single-day viewership record on the Amazon platform. That’s why it makes sense that Blizzard is taking a clever marketing cue from one of its biggest competitors to stay relevant and keep discourse about the game in a place it’s happy with. Overwatch 2 has been delayed numerous times, and the original Overwatch hasn’t received a super-substantial update in almost two years as a result.

Overwatch 2: All the hero reworks in the beta (Polygon)

Overwatch 2's beta introduces major hero reworks for 4 characters, plus small kit and ability changes to other Overwatch heroes. Here's what's changed.

The centuaurlike defense robot Orisa is radically changing in Overwatch 2, starting with the removal of her Protective Barrier shield and her Halt! graviton charge ability. He also has more control during his Charge attack, and can cancel out of it. While her Hack ability now disrupts enemy abilities for a shorter period of time, it also exposes a hacked enemy’s location to Sombra and the rest of her team. Bastion also has a new alt-fire attack, the A-36 Tactical Grenade, which fires a bomb that bounces off walls and explodes when it impacts enemies or hits the ground. In the Overwatch 2 beta, players will find very different versions of Bastion, Doomfist, Orisa, and Sombra on the roster. Overwatch 2’s first beta is now live, giving players a taste of substantial changes coming to Blizzard Entertainment’s hero shooter.

The Overwatch 2 Beta Has A New Scoreboard That Shows ... (Forbes)

It shows kills, assists, deaths, damage and healing for all players.

You’ll also find links to the patch notes and system requirements below: If you haven’t received an invite for the beta yet, don’t worry! It’ll perhaps make players take on more individual responsibility and will give everyone in a game a clearer sense of each person’s impact. I can’t deny that the game has some toxic gamers, but making K/D and similar details private to each player would have helped reduce flaming and criticism between players. There’s a new scoreboard that shows the key statistics for all players. So, for Roadhog, that includes things like hook accuracy, the number of enemies hooked and Whole Hog kills.

Overwatch 2 has a new way to judge other players, and I'm nervous (PC Gamer)

Having all of your stats laid bare, as they are in CS:GO, Valorant, and Rainbow Six Siege, gives both teammates and enemies ammo to 'back up' abusive comments ...

It's striking that in Overwatch 2, an objective-based game, none of the stats on the scoreboard have to do with the objective. But if useful stats are the goal, then Overwatch 2's scoreboard is already lacking. Regular Overwatch forgoes a normal scoreboard for a medal system that was actually designed to curb the toxicity of stat-obsessed teammates. Your individual stats can have gold, silver, or bronze medals that tell you how you're stacking up against your team—if you have a gold medal in damage, for instance, you've dealt the most damage of your team. It's common for players to use their medals as evidence that the rest of the team is doing poorly. There's a lot of pressure to perform well—if not to win the match, then at least to spare yourself from being harassed by other players in text or voice chat.

Overwatch 2 changes from Overwatch 1 (The Game Haus)

Overwatch 2 took away the 2CP maps so maps like Hanamura, Anubis, Volskaya, Paris, and Lunar Colony are out of the map pool. In Overwatch 2 there is an addition ...

In combination with the maps and new passives, the loss of the second tank is off-put to make the player feel more self-reliant. The loss of a tank is a huge change for the player base, but the Overwatch 2 team has put a lot of thought into making the feel of the gameplay, not a deduction of what the player base is used to. Screenshots reflect the state of the game at the time of playing and changes may be made after the publication of the article. When it was in Overwatch 1, the off-tank would sometimes act as a bodyguard to protect the supports from DPS. With this addition, the supports are able to heal without using an ability and even fight back against an opponent. Orisa feels quite cool, with a mix of melee and CC now built in the kit. This not only is able to increase the speed but allows for multiple recontests that in the past might have just been a D.Va flying in to touch. This greatly bridges the feeling within the game of not having a second tank. There are many factors that play into Overwatch 2 to make the integration of 5v5 feel as smooth as the original Overwatch 1’s 6v6. The use of the map architecture is going to be important. With the release of the beta, the biggest Overwatch 2 changes is to effective team compositions. The Overwatch 2 comes with many new components. Because of the 2/2/2 lock that is still in place, this means that one role was reduced to one, the tank.

How To Set Up Twitch Drops For Guaranteed Overwatch 2 Beta ... (Forbes)

To be eligible for a drop with guaranteed Overwatch 2 PVP beta access, you'll need to watch four hours of selected Twitch streams during that eight-hour window.

It’s worth noting that you don't literally need to watch a Twitch stream to get a drop. To install the beta, follow these steps: If, say, you’re a complete newcomer to Overwatch and you don’t already have one, you’ll also need to create a Battle.net account. You can sign up for one on the Twitch website. The watch time accumulates on your account, so you can switch between channels. Blizzard might still invite more people to the beta via email, but the Drops are a guaranteed way to make it in.

Overwatch 2 needs to pull its story out of the past (PC Gamer)

Overwatch 2 is here! Sort of! The beta for the game's multiplayer portion dropped this week, letting folks try out the dramatic changes Blizzard has made to ...

The thing is, Overwatch 2 is the perfect opportunity for Blizzard to turn things around. A willingness to change the status quo and complicate characters does a lot to make them feel like complex people, and not just videogame archetypes. What Overwatch lacks is a narrative present, and it's something I think about often in relation to games like Apex Legends. Released in 2019, Apex was a deliberately post-Overwatch take on Titanfall—an attempt to inject colourful characters into that series' grey military sci-fi universe. The presentation was impeccable, and a lot of care went into defining characters through personality, silhouetting and thematically-defined playstyles. In a post-Overwatch landscape, even games like Battlefield and Call of Duty are all-but-required to have unique characters with their own names, kits and backstories. But despite a 5v5 format change, a controversial new scoreboard and dramatic hero reworks, Overwatch 2 is still very much Overwatch, with both games set to share the same multiplayer.
