Bad Bunny unveiled as new Marvel superhero 'El Muerto' (NBC News)

Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, better known by his stage name Bad Bunny, has been cast as the newest Marvel hero in Sony Pictures' portfolio of the super.

On stage at CinemaCon, Sony brass suggested Ocasio will portray an antihero on the verge of inheriting his father’s power. Upcoming Sony Marvel projects include: the anticipated “Madame Web,” a female-led adventure starring Dakota Johnson, which is due in theaters on July 7, 2023; and the imminent “Kraven the Hunter,” led by “Nocturnal Animals” star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, which hits theaters on January 13, 2023. “El Muerto” is set to hit theaters on Jan. 12, 2024.

Morales is half Puerto Rican (via his mother) in the comics and in the film. But there is no bigger Latino star in any medium than Bad Bunny, who has been Spotify’s most streamed artist in the world the last two years, while performing exclusively in Spanish. If Santo Benito wants to play your Mexican superhero on film, you don’t say no, and playing a Mexican icon did wonders for another Puerto Rican actor-musician: J-Lo (see “Selena”). So maybe lightning will strike twice.

This is a historic moment, as Martínez Ocasio is set to become the first Latino to lead a Marvel movie. He was first introduced in the comics on Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Vol. 1 #6, where he faces off in the ring against Spider-Man for a charity match.

That magical mask gives the character superhuman strength, and also a high level of endurance. He has a complicated family life and backstory that will give the film plenty to work with without ever having to feature Peter Parker at all. He will, however, make Bad Bunny the first Latino actor leading a Marvel movie.
