Tanaka, who was born on January 2, 1903, died on April 19, the ministry said. Guinness World Records said they were saddened to hear of Tanaka's passing, and ...
Government figures released in July 2020 showed that women have a life expectancy of 87.45 years compared with 81.4 for men. Tanaka had been living in a nursing home in Fukuoka. Her family said she kept her mind and body engaged by doing math and remaining curious. Tanaka's family said in a tweet earlier this month that she had been frequently sick recently and "in and out of hospital."
Kane Tanaka, the world's oldest person, has died in Japan at age 119, officials said.
At age 19, Tanaka married a rice shop owner and worked in the store until she was 103, CNN said. The Guinness Book of World Records confirmed Tanaka’s passing in a Twitter post, saying she became the oldest living person in January 2019 and was the second-oldest person ever recorded behind Jeanne Calment, who lived to the age of 122. Tanaka was born on Jan. 2, 1903, in the city of Fukuoka, and has lived through many changes in the world, including two world wars and two pandemics, as well as the advent of the nuclear age and space travel.
According to her family, the Japanese supercentenarian had been hospitalized and discharged repeatedly in recent weeks.
A recent study posited that Calment died at the age of 59, leaving her daughter, Yvonne, to assume her identity in an attempt to avoid paying inheritance taxes. (“I don’t know what this is,” she said when the framed record was placed in her hands.) Tanaka was also treated to flowers and a box of chocolates, which she opened immediately, announcing her intention to eat 100 of the sweets. Longevity among the country’s population has been attributed to factors like healthy culinary traditions, but as Nuwer points out, Japan has also been keeping meticulous birth records for more than a century. To make it onto the list, supercentenarian candidates must present at least two pieces of documentation proving their age, a current photo ID, and, for women who took their husband’s name after marriage, proof of the name change. The couple had four children and adopted a fifth. Staff members, friends and a local broadcast crew were there to witness the occasion, which marked Tanaka’s 117th birthday.
