Streisand became the first woman to win a Golden Globe for Best Director with “Yentl” and it would take another 37 years until another woman took home the award (Chloe Zhao for 2020’s “Nomadland”). One of only four women to win the Best Actress Academy Award for her debut performance, Barbra also has the distinction of winning the only time when the Best Actress category has resulted in a tie between winners – Katharine Hepburn was also declared a winner for “The Lion In Winter”. In 1996 she collaborated with Bryan Adams for the Oscar-nominated duet “I Finally Found Someone” from “The Mirror Has Two Faces”, which became Babs’ first gold-certified single since 1981. Streisand made her first acting appearance in a film with an adaptation of her Broadway hit, Funny Girl. A critical and commercial success directed by the legendary William Wyler, Streisand took home the 1968 Best Actress Oscar for her performance. This left Barbra to pursue a nightclub gig, eventually leading her to star in the new musical comedy “I Can Get It For You Wholesale” opposite her eventual (ex) husband, Elliot Gould. Barbra Streisand’s first taste of applause came after a boyfriend convinced her to enter a talent contest at a gay nightclub in 1960.

The vocals come from a place of vulnerability and truth, as both singers sing from their past experiences to carve one of the more engaging vocals in their canon. Streisand makes her stamp on this song that has since gone on to become a favourite in the halls of the music theatres. Her pronunciation is a little stilted, but that’s not a reflection of her singing, gushing from the bottom of her gut to the highest strands of her vocal abilities. It’s the role of the bass to pump up the band. There’s a lot more depth and density to her work, not least in this duet with Neil Diamond, the man who penned the tune. In a career that has lasted decades, the vocalist has emerged as one of the most important artists of her generation. Deeply beautiful, and cut with great interest in the work itself, this is something that works well in her standing. This shimmering ballad showcases the singer covering the Bee Gees, and does so quite well, deviating from a purr to a roaring, boisterous vocal that surrounds the instruments that coast the voices, making it more intricate to listen to. She has never tied herself to one genre alone, and this list shows her versatility, vulnerability and valiance as a person of great composition and poise.
