But a few years later, Dombrowski managed to convince his former team to part with the young star. After spending the first five seasons of his career with the then-Florida Marlins, they traded Cabrera to the Tigers ahead of the 2008 season, and he’s been in Detroit ever since. Future MLB Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera reaches hit No. 3000 during a Detroit Tigers home game at Comerica Park.

The elusive career milestone comes less than a year after the slugger cranked out his 500th home run last August. He is just the 33rd player in baseball history to reach the 3,000-hit mark and only the seventh to do it while also smashing 500 home runs. In his MLB debut, the Florida Marlins rookie stepped into the batter’s box in the bottom of the eleventh inning, trailing by a run, with the home crowd roaring in support.

He’s the 33rd member of the 3,000-hit club, the seventh player born outside the United States to reach the mark and the first from Venezuela. Cabrera told his teammates what he had told the media earlier: He was legitimately nervous because he wanted to get No. 3,000 in front of the home crowd in Detroit. But the deal was a coup for the Tigers, who would win four consecutive division titles and an American League pennant in Cabrera’s prime.
