Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has been dropped by interim manager Ralf Rangnick for Saturday's Premier League match at Arsenal.

Maguire has endured a difficult week. I can only tell you, never in my life will I be part of Instagram. But Eric Bailly was not the man to replace Maguire in Rangnick's team to face Arsenal. Both defenders were named among the substitutes with Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof starting at center-back.

Arsenal strengthen top four hopes, compound Man United misery (ESPN)

Arsenal dealt a blow to Manchester United's hopes of a top-four Premier League finish as Nuno Tavares, Bukayo Saka and Granit Xhaka struck in a 3-1 win on Saturday that revived the home side's chances of Champions League football next season.

That came after a brilliant save by Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to push Diogo Dalot's shot on to the post -- the second time in the game the player hit the woodwork, on a frustrating day for United, who also had a Ronaldo strike ruled out for offside. Ronaldo's 100th Premier League goal came after a traumatic week personally after the death of one of his newborn twin babies. United improved in the second half but their woes deepened as captain Bruno Fernandes hit the post with a poor effort from the penalty spot following Tavares' handball, before a 70th-minute thunderbolt from Xhaka sealed the win for Arsenal.

Granit Xhaka's cracker caps Arsenal's wild win over Manchester ... (The Guardian)

Arsenal boosted their chances of a top-four finish as Granit Xhaka capitalised on a Bruno Fernandes penalty miss.

Dalot then hit the post after a Ronaldo pass while Tavares was fortunate not to be penalised for a challenge on Elanga on the fringes of the area. McTominay worked Ramsdale and, when Ronaldo spun and lashed home after a Fernandes headed flick, he was denied by the tightest of offside calls. He was reprieved when Fernandes stuttered, hopped and dragged his kick against the outside of a post. The same could be said of Tavares’s decision to jump for a United corner with his arm outstretched. Their last line was all over the place, and soon let Eddie Nketiah in for a one-on-one chance. The excellent Bukayo Saka shaped a shot for the far corner which was tipped out by De Gea at full stretch, but the United defence remained on their heels, particularly Dalot, and Tavares was able to tap home.

Paul Scholes has claimed Manchester United's dressing room is "a disaster" after Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Arsenal.

"Cristiano told me after the game that he didn't feel well enough and that's why Bruno took it. "I don't know, you have to ask Jesse Lingard if you have this information," he said. "It is an absolute mess," Scholes said.

The Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay said they lacked belief and didn't do 'the basics' after their 3-1 defeat to Arsenal.

You look at the league table – with Tottenham and Arsenal – and it’s not very realistic to dream and talk about the top four.” “The defeat to Atlético Madrid [in the Champions League last 16] destroyed a lot of hopes and also the emotions of some of the players, which I can understand,” he said. “This is why we have a VAR.” It comes down to the basics and we never do them well enough in big games, recently.” When we get back in the dressing room – it’s go home and take a look at yourself in the mirror. You can’t go back to your house and be satisfied with conceding three goals away at Arsenal when we deserved to win the game.

Manchester United struggle to 'keep the energy level high' for Ralf ... (CBSSports.com)

United showed flashes of promise as they chased the game at the Emirates Stadium but can Rangnick motivate his squad?

He added that "quite obviously it's hard to keep the energy level high," insisting it was a "question of pride and honor" that his side ended the season in a strong fashion with precious little to play for. It is, he conceded, "not very realistic to dream and speak about top four". That leaves the question of how he will keep his players motivated. It was in those moments of pressing intensity that United might have won this game, and yet they could not make it last. Still there is something to be said for the panic that Arsenal faced in seeing such stellar attacking talent getting into their grills. Burst through that line and you were unlikely to face further waves of pressure, indeed when a quick change of direction took Ben White beyond his man early in the second half he seemed baffled to see huge tracts of land ahead of him. In moments, Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Bruno Fernandes became the snapping dervishes in the press that modern forwards are supposed to be.

Football Manager 2022: Playing out Erik ten Hag's time at ... (The Athletic)

With the help of Football Manager 2022, we did a test to see how Erik ten Hag would perform at Manchester United. Here's what we found.

They ended up finishing 17 points behind Liverpool in fourth and 28 points behind Man City, who won the league for a third consecutive season in this experiment. Neither player was able to land a starting role and failed to make much of an impact when they did get an opportunity. He reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League three times but never got further than that. One league victory in their last seven games condemned United to another season of mediocrity, despite sitting on the cusp of a title after 28 games. Ten Hag also chose not to sign a marquee striker and that came back to bite him. Ten Hag was left to rely heavily on impactful contributions from the players we see at United today, and as such the club’s form tailed off in their pursuit of the title. Ten Hag stayed true to his loyal 4-2-3-1 formation but an inability to make the right transfer signings again proved costly. Sancho continued to make progress, registering 35 goal contributions in 50 games, while also leading the league in assists with 18, but both Fernandes and Ronaldo saw their production dip. And in the first season of this simulation on FM22, that’s exactly what he did. Wan-Bissaka was sold to RB Leipzig for a fee of £12.5 million as Ten Hag went all-in on Dalot. They had the league’s fourth-best defensive record and registered the fourth-highest number of goals. Having learned from the likes of Pep Guardiola, Edwin van der Sar and Steve McClaren, Ten Hag made a name for himself at Ajax playing an attractive brand of football that resulted in trophies and over-achieving in Europe.

The Manchester United egos will be a major part of the challenge for Erik ten Hag. Even in the week that his appointment as manager was announced, ...

He said he can deal with the Cristiano Ronaldos of this world. Some of the Amsterdam commentariat gave him a hard time when he arrived at Ajax because of his provincial dialect. Ten Hag told Trouw he stood by his support for the Dutch international, who is now with Spartak Moscow. 'People make mistakes. If you want to get the most out of people, you have to take an interest in them.' 'I follow politics and come from an entrepreneurial family [which is in property],' he told Trouw. 'Where Erik works, he needs time,' his former assistant Alfred Schreuder, a leading candidate to replace him at Ajax, once said. 'Get down to the library and read a book instead,' he once said. But his tactical acumen and record made fools of those who ridiculed him. And they are also necessary to survive in such a world. 'In the last century, the world was still relatively uncluttered,' he said in the interview, with Dutch newspaper Trouw. 'The internet has changed a lot. But Ten Hag made it clear that he accepted this as one of the many complexities which made a manager's job something like a social worker's these days. as Ajax boss vows to be a leader and protect players from criticism at Old Trafford

It comes down to the basics and we never do them well enough in big games recently.” The interim manager is known as the godfather of gegenpressing but it is a system that requires consistent levels of application and industry. Rangnick is forthright about United’s underperformance in interviews but he seems unsure as to how to get this group of troubled players to buy into his plans. The improvisational quality that brightened much of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure has been replaced by a sense of learned helplessness and distrust in whatever systems Rangnick is trying to get across. United would attempt better in the second half but lacked concentration in midfield and precision when executing their golden opportunities. On Saturday they were beaten by an Arsenal side who weren’t particularly impressive but played with a clearer sense of what they wanted to do with themselves.
