Furry is a nexus for queer art and queer people, and it’s one of the few places in particular gay men and masculine queers get to have some decent representation in our media, and queer men and masculine people are kind of starving for that.” And while it’s common for basically any masculine-coded anthropomorphized character to immediately become the subject of steamy fan art, with Mr. Wolf, furries did so “at lightning speed,” he says. Still, in the absence of official furry recognition from mainstream entertainment, members of the fandom will likely continue to simp after Mr. Wolf without recognition, posting one erect lupine phallus at a time. I think there’s some very suggestive things in the advertising,” says GeorgeSquares. And while he doesn’t think this type of audience baiting “is inherently bad or necessarily comparable to queer baiting,” he does think it reflects a larger absence of queer representation in mainstream media in general. With his broad shoulders, revolving wardrobe of crisp, well-fitted suits, and rakish, come-hither expressions, Mr. Wolf, the slick protagonist of the upcoming DreamWorks release The Bad Guys, looks like a classic American male sex symbol, in the grand tradition of Cary Grant, Harrison Ford, and Brad Pitt. To that end, the character is prompting hordes of thirsty comments on the internet: “Mr. Wolf isn’t attracted to u OR anyone else. And nearly 10 percent of all tweets and replies to DreamWorks’ Bad Guys trailer included the word “furry,” according to TrendsMap data. “The character designers and animators did such a great job of bringing him to life in the medium of animation and how expressive the wolf could get with his eyes, ears, and body movements.” It’s worth noting, however, that @asumono_krom describes himself in his Twitter bio as “Mr. Wolf big simp.” Almost immediately after the trailer dropped late last year, furries gravitated to The Bad Guys, and to Rockwell’s character in particular. Despite most popular conceptions about furries, not all people in the fandom harbor sexual attractions to anthropomorphized creatures — but many of those currently thirsting after Mr. Wolf certainly do.

It’s all pretty lightweight stuff, and after recent mainstream triumphs like Turning Red and Encanto from two different arms of Disney, The Bad Guys may well shore up DreamWorks’ status as the B-squad of contemporary American animation, where spectacle is the default and emotional growth is a little pat. In other words, these are bad guys who are unexpectedly given the opportunity to improve themselves (like in Despicable Me) and break out of the villainous role that society assigned them (like in Wreck-It Ralph) based on the harmful stereotypes of their animal characteristics (like in Zootopia). This isn’t even the first time DreamWorks has gone to this well; its movie Megamind features a supervillain discovering his inner goodness. (There are still smaller animals, like guinea pigs and kittens, who don’t speak or walk upright.) This not fully realized world, where side characters scarcely seem to exist outside the background of various capers, lends The Bad Guys an unpredictable whimsicality as it adapts heist roles for cartoon animals. Perifel really does seem interested in making a kid-friendly heist/caper picture, with all the cons and twists that entails. And of course, Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell) gets the audience up to speed by addressing them directly: What would DreamWorks movies be without narrated exposition in the first 10 minutes? And yet, since this is a heist movie, director Pierre Perifel knows it’s the details that matter.

He also wrote two songs, one of which (“We’re Gonna Be Good Tonight”) is the focus of an early heist scene. This was genuinely one of the most pleasurable moviemaking experiences I’ve ever had.” “The film in some ways is an homage to classic caper movies,” says the English composer, “and it’s a world I really love playing in. The more detail I can put on each performance, the better it can be,” although he also admits that “by the time the film’s finished you’re like, can anybody even hear this?” “At its core, it’s a very joyous score, even though there’s sneakiness, tension, all that kind of stuff,” he notes. “The Bad Guys” contains Hammond organ, fuzz guitar, bongo drums, Moog synthesizer, which reference that period.

While a truly great version of this material would have pushed those themes even further, "The Bad Guys" mostly keeps things on the lighter, sillier side of the kids movie spectrum. Or did they only go into a life of crime because the world already saw them as bad? And what if instead of just locking them away, we offered them a path towards transformation and rehabilitation?

The Bad Guys runneth over with loving but not overly overt nods to the movies of Tarantino, Friedkin, Soderbergh, Scorsese, and others. Chief among them is Richard Ayoade—a stand-out in last year’s The Souvenir: Part II—lending an irony laden brio to Professor Marmalade, a sanctimonious guinea pig do-gooder. And though it opens for the first time in theaters this Friday, April 22, you can’t help shake that mysterious Sinbad-as-Shazam conviction that not only does this movie already exist, it’s currently gathering dust among a pile of half-forgotten DVDs somewhere in a corner of your apartment.
