Disney's new Lightyear movie will explore time travel as well as space (The Verge)

Pixar's upcoming Lightyear movie due out June 17th is meant to be an origin story about the "real" Buzz Lightyear, but the new trailer raises even more ...

While one of the first faces Buzz sees in the future is a friendly one who he mistakes for Alisha, Izzy (Keke Palmer) informs him that Alisha was her grandmother, and it quickly becomes clear that Buzz has wandered much, much farther than anyone intended. Though Buzz’s solo flight through the gate at first seems to be a near success, when he touches down on what seems to be an unfamiliar planet, his robot cat assistant Sox (Peter Sohn) informs him that he’s somehow journeyed decades into the future. In the new trailer, Buzz (Chris Evans) along with his earthbound partner Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba) are finally prepping for a launch involving one of Star Command’s first gates seemingly designed to facilitate long distance.

“During the first mission, take a look at the stars in the sky. That level of detail was essential in enhancing that level of reality to the film. Pixar's Lightyear Trailer: To Infinity and We Yawned (Vulture)

Also, “the human Buzz Lightyear that the toy is based on,” voiced by Evans, looks like a de-aged Patrick Warburton fused with Jay Leno? He’s alllllllll chin, baby. The animation is so advanced and lifelike that it makes the stylized human characters with their bush baby eyes a little unsettling. Well, all these years later, we decided it’s time to make that film.” That makes Lightyear kind of a prequel to Toy Story while also being a movie that exists within the world of Toy Story. If that’s the case, shouldn’t its trailer be done in a fun, throwback ’90s style?

New 'Lightyear' Trailer Teases 'Captain America' By Way Of 'Austin ... (Forbes)

Walt Disney dropped a third theatrical trailer for Pixar's Lightyear this morning, one timed to play with DreamWorks Animation's (pretty damn enjoyable) The ...

Lightyear opens June 17, six weeks after the 25th anniversary of the first Austin Powers and also over/under the 40th anniversary of Tron, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan and Blade Runner. Between you and me, I’m hoping for sci-fi weirdness closer to The Black Hole. It’ll “premiere” at next month’s Cannes film festival. That film, along with being a loving spoof of James Bond movies (and 007 knockoffs of the In Like Flynt variety), was a surprisingly potent look at the perils of nostalgia and the refusal to acknowledge how society has progressed past your reference point. Sure, there’s some Captain America to this (I’m assuming Lightyear isn’t going to hook up with young Izzy Hawthorne), but the core set-up is also quite reminiscent of a film that’s about to celebrate its 25th anniversary, namely Mike Myers’ Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. That modern comedy classic launched a blockbuster franchise and gave false hope to decades of would-be franchise-starters everywhere.

Complicating matters and threatening the mission is the arrival of Zurg, an imposing presence with an army of ruthless robots and a mysterious agenda. The new images show Buzz preparing to depart on a space exploration mission. The definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the toy, “Lightyear” follows the legendary Space Ranger after he’s marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew. Buzz’s helmet reflects the light of distant stars, as the explorer seems ready to take us on a journey to infinity and beyond. From textures to lightning, everything in the images looks stunningly good, and it will surely be a treat to catch Lightyear in theaters. “Buzz’s world was always something I was excited about.

'Lightyear' Director Angus McLane Says Film Highlights 'A Positive ... (SHADOW & ACT)

Pixar 's latest film, Lightyear , is an origin story of sorts for the character of Buzz Lightyear, serving as the film that Andy would have seen that made ...

That's thinking about five and a half years in the future all the time…at the same time, we need to be experiencing our lives as they are, our families as they are, as we're going through that. McLane said he wanted to explore that aspect of humanity because of how easy it is to miss the present moment. "…That aspect was always baked into the story idea of the movie, but it also reflects the passion that we have as a studio to represent a wide variety of experiences of people, and even if they aren't our own, getting in people to help educate and make sure those [representations] are authentic."

The first image from Lightyear depicts Buzz preparing to depart and head off into the unknown, while the second shows the Space Ranger discussing his upcoming mission with a fellow space exploring colleague. Directed by Angus MacLane, Lightyear stars Captain America himself, Chris Evans, as the voice of the title character.
