The Jazz did not have enough time to stage a comeback and the Dallas Mavericks took a 2-1 lead over Utah, winning 126-118 It took seeing to believe it, but the much (and fairly) maligned bench guys came up huge in a road game of all things against Utah. Josh Green played out of his mind, finally connecting on a three and that helped him gain the confidence to hit a few more. After a Jazz timeout, Jalen Brunson went on a scoring spree extend the Dallas lead to 9. Somehow the Mavericks extended their lead with a line up of Spencer Dinwiddie, Josh Green, Dorian Finney-Smith, Davis Bertans, and Trey Burke, getting ahead by as many as 15 early in the quarter. The Dallas Mavericks took a 2-1 series lead Thursday night, defeating the Utah Jazz on the road 126-118. Maxi Kleber came off the bench to give Dallas three more threes and Josh Green hit two as well help the Mavericks hold off the Utah offense.

Mavs vs. Jazz Game 3: Can Dinwiddie Break Out of Shooting Slump? (Sports Illustrated)

With Luka Doncic nearly ready to return, the Dallas Mavericks would have a major advantage if Spencer Dinwiddie finds his touch again.

Perhaps Doncic’s return will result in Dinwiddie’s shooting splits getting back up to what they looked like in the regular season. Aside from occasionally having to guard Bojan Bogdanovic in the post, Dinwiddie has played well defensively in this series. Those numbers alone are fine, as the Mavs will take all the points and secondary distributing they can get until Doncic is back.

Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic ruled out for Game 3 vs. Utah Jazz (ESPN)

Luka Doncic is out Thursday vs. the Jazz, despite progress on a calf injury.

But if I'm ready and there's no risk of [aggravating the] injury, I'll be out there." I want to be out there the most time as possible, but like I say, I'm going to see how I feel and we're going to talk to the medical staff. If it's not risk, I don't want to play limited minutes because I'll be nervous. "I think it just shows the trust that he has in us as well. "He is a player that has so much ahead of him in his future, so him being smart about it is key," said Mavs guard Jalen Brunson, whose career-high 41 points keyed the Game 2 win. "We feel like sitting him tonight follows that plan."

“We want to have him back and quickly and as healthy as possible. “But obviously we want him back healthy so he stays healthy and helps us because we know he’s our best player.” Doncic said he was “feeling good” and can see improvement in himself from when he first suffered the injury. “He’s doing the work that the medical staff has asked him to do, and there hasn’t been any setback,” Kidd said. “I just miss basketball,” Doncic said. “Today and yesterday I did a little bit.

With Luka Doncic sidelined by a calf injury, the Dallas Mavericks needed their supporting cast to step up in their first-round series with the Utah Jazz.

Thankfully he was able to return after the break, and apparently escaped any sort of serious injury. But when the ball was in the air, Brunson turned to box out Royce O'Neale, who came charging in and sent Brunson sprawling with a hard hit to the back. With five minutes to play in the quarter, the Jazz brought the ball down the floor and Mike Conley ran a pick-and-roll with Rudy Gobert. After getting some space, Conley launched a 3 that caught nothing but the bottom of the net.

"Everybody expects us to take care of business, and we didn't in the first half," Mitchell said. All 31 of Brunson's points in Game 3 came off the dribble, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. Kleber had 17 points in 22 minutes on Thursday, when he made four of his five 3-point attempts. It's the first time Brunson, a four-year veteran, has scored 30 or more points in consecutive games in his NBA career. Brunson, the Mavs' second-leading scorer with 16.3 points per game, has starred in the series as Dallas' primary ballhandler with Doncic sidelined. Doncic has been ramping up his basketball activity and hopes to make his series debut in Saturday's Game 4.

“It is a really tough gym to play in,” Kleber said. Looks of disbelief were common, and folks hit the exits in droves. “They talk about defense, and we got stops when we had to. The dagger came when Finney-Smith hit an open 3-pointer from (where else?) the corner. Brunson returned from the blow uncalled, and uncalled for from O’Neale, to lead the Mavericks with 31 points on 12 of 22 shooting. That’s more than the Jazz even attempted, as they were 3 of 9 on 3s. They might be without O’Neale, the hero in Game 1 for nailing a 3-pointer in the final minute in Dallas. They are going to keep fighting.” “They were just playing really hard, withstanding their run and doing what they were doing. “They are a team that is not going to quit. Playing without star point guard Luka Doncic for the third straight playoff game, Dallas took a 2-1 series lead and most likely will get the Slovenian back for Game 4 on Saturday afternoon. He returned in the second half.

Dallas Mavericks take series lead over Utah Jazz without Luka Doncic (Arizona Sports)

The Dallas Mavericks — without the injured Luka Doncic — beat the Utah Jazz 126-118 on Thursday night to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

… Clarkson made a three-quarter-court shot but it came just after the first-quarter horn. But he shook it off and toyed with Jazz on a variety of drives to the baskets against several different defenders. … Tim Hardaway Jr. (foot surgery) is probably out for the playoffs unless Dallas makes a deep run.

NBA Playoffs LOOK: Mavs Break 6-Year Streak; Suspend Cheap-Shot Jazz Royce O'Neale? Late-night drama, stubborn Super Bowl sights, a 50-year drought and a ...

Except that the same night – at the same game in the same building – a 15-year-old North Richland Hills girl was lured into sex trafficking. In 1972, I was a 7-year-old punk – as opposed to the 57-year-old punk I’ve grown into – just beginning to absorb the wonderful world of sports. In Oklahoma, for example, Trump indeed won every county in the 2020 election. Dad had taken me to watch the minor-league Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs at what was known as Turnpike Stadium in Arlington. But on April 21, 1972 we were treated to Major League Baseball and the Rangers. We went to the first home game at brand spankin’ new Arlington Stadium, sat on those glorious metal bleachers in right-center field for like $5 and when Frank Howard whistled a line-drive homer to center field in the first inning I was hooked. But ... not while sitting on a beach, in a silk robe, with no hat, no umbrella, no cell phone, no magazine, no nothing. At 3-9 they are off to their worst start since 1987 (2-10) and the days of Bobby Valentine, Ruben Sierra and Charlie Hough. They did, however, turn a triple play this week in Seattle. Raise your hand if you predicted the Rangers would produce a triple play this season before Marcus Semien hit a home run. Also born in Wurzburg, the 6-10 Kleber made eight 3-pointers in Game 2 and his first four in Game 3. – the conversation turned to … zip codes. *Despite Thursday night’s dramatic 8-6 victory made possible only by a rally from a 5-0, first-inning deficit, wiggling out of a bases-loaded jam in the 8th, a two-out, two-run counterpunch in the 9th and a diving catch by Adolis Garcia to seal it, I fear I need to amend my Rangers prediction. But, like the Cowboys, they have a stadium in which they’ve won only once – going 1-5 in Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The Rangers rallied from a five-run deficit, capped by Adolis Garcia's best helmet-less run since Jason Witten in Philly 15 years ago. Fortunately for Dallas, no visits to Maryland are on the 2022 schedule.

Now presenting, for your enjoyment or disgust depending on which team you support, the Jazz's attempts to stay in front of the Mavericks on the perimeter. There are certain games where you need to do a rewatch and a deep dive to really understand and explain what was happening on the court. Brunson just goes left like no one is there and finishes at the rim. Instead, he immediately put the ball on the deck and ghosted past a completely off-balance Mitchell for an easy layup. There wasn't even a blow-by here, but Gobert expected one was coming which was good enough for the Mavericks. Dallas Mavericks have all the answers against the Utah Jazz in ... (Mavs Moneyball)

Dallas had a clear game plan for Utah on both sides of the ball and the execution of that strategy has been almost perfection, pushing the Mavericks have a 2-1 ...

The Mavericks have outscored the Jazz from the three point line in every game this series and have doubled them up both in Game 2 and 3. The Jazz led the league in three point rate this season and the Mavericks have almost cut that number in half in this series. Once again, the Mavericks had an answer. The Jazz almost broke through in Game 3, not because the Mavericks lost track of shooters but because Maxi Kleber had serious foul trouble. In Game 3, the Mavericks had another answer. Again, the Mavericks had an answer. The Jazz decided to let Gobert play free safety on defense, since Green was on the floor and the Jazz could gamble on him being open. Knowing this, the Mavericks adjusted Green’s role in Game 3. To best explain how the Mavericks did this in Game 3, allow me to take you through a series of plays that showcase this. Reggie Bullock and Dorian Finney-Smith have been so invaluable to the Mavericks defensive attack, that coach Jason Kidd can rarely keep them off the floor. So Brunson has fried the Jazz with a fade against their best defender in isolation, hunted the Jazz’s poorest defenders in the pick and roll, and now countered O’Neale’s adjustment by going away from the screen when O’Neale tried to avoid being screened. O’Neale, expecting the Brunson fadeaway like earlier in the game, flies by Brunson as Brunson pulls off a sweet up and under for another and-one.
