Charging extra for DLC is bound to stick in the craw of fans who have stuck by Sonic and Sega through thick and thin. but we're just not sure we'd pay extra to hear them through a BGM menu. On the Sonic Origins website, fans can see numerous DLC bundles listed along with the Digital Deluxe and Standard editions of the game.

That Start Dash Pack isn't exactly great, as it's making you preorder the game to get content that really seems like it should be accessible from the start. It's worth stressing the developer Headcannon, who made the excellent Sonic Mania and have helped develop this collection, weren't involved in the DLC mess. The Start Dash Pack contains letterbox background, Mirror Mode, and 100 Bonus Coins. So does that mean that those who don't preorder won't ever get to play the game in Mirror Mode, or (more likely) that it will be unlockable using the in-game currency or as a paid DLC down the line?

Given the choice I’d prefer a sequel to that than a collection of the Mega Drive and Mega-CD games, but this is what we’re getting for now. Most cheeky is that hard missions are only included in the Premium Fun Pack DLC or Digital Deluxe Edition, the latter being an extra £4 on top of the Standard Edition. Pre-orders of the Standard and Deluxe Editions also get access to mirror mode.

I understand that these new versions of these Sonic classics are just that; new ports, crafted to allow players to experience both the games as they were and in a new ‘anniversary mode’ complete with widescreen presentation. I’ll tell you something, though: those fees feel like a waste of money here, in a collection of games that are so readily available on the internet that slapping DRM on this collection feels like a bad joke. I just punched “play Sonic the Hedgehog online” into google, clicked the second result, and found myself on a webpage which doesn’t even require you to download a ROM or Emulator; it runs the game in the browser! The actual new game, Sonic Frontiers, is still a while off - so up steps Sonic Origins, a collection of the truly good Sonic games - which is to say, the 2D ones, the first four entries in the series. All of these games have been re-released before on a shed load of platforms, but what makes this release particularly exciting is that these are ports.
