'Disappointing': Gerrit Cole Evaluates Shortest Start of Career (Sports Illustrated)

New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole evaluates his disappointing outing against the Detroit Tigers, the shortest start of his entire MLB career.

He did admit, however, that on a cold night in a very long inning, his legs were shaking before Boone came out to get him in the second. Boone added that he felt he left his ace in the game for too long. "Probably got a little bit out of his rhythm. After an abbreviated spring, Cole had yet to throw more than 85 pitches in a game this season. Cole walked in a run with the bases loaded, losing Willi Castro after an 11-pitch at-bat. Beginning with a base hit up the middle off the bat of Miguel Cabrera, Cole faced seven batters in the frame.

"He's such a prolific character in this sport - it was cool to be able to face him and have his name on the lineup card for my first career win." "I'm not sure about the timelines on everything, but my understanding is we're going to be okay." "I probably shouldn't have left him out there as long as I did," Boone said. "That was a brutal night for everyone who had to pitch," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. He struck Cabrera out in the fifth. "My understanding is that we're going to be OK," he said before Tuesday's game. "I misplayed that, and the wind isn't an excuse," Barnhart said. Garcia left with a cracked fingernail and Will Vest allowed a sacrifice fly to Aaron Hicks to make it 3-0. "I think he's poised for a big year for us," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. Cole's 46 pitches were his career high for an inning, before Schmidt relieved. "I’ve certainly never had anything like that in my career before," he said. "Even with an off day yesterday, there were still some guys we were staying away from, so we really needed that length from him."

Yankees' Clarke Schmidt has 'very special moment' (nj.com)

New York Yankees righty Clarke Schmidt earned his first career victory in a win over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday.

Schmidt said he received the scorecard from the game, which the team was going to sign for him. “He’s always laughing and making funny faces and stuff,” Schmidt said. “It was a special moment, especially since he’s chasing such a milestone,” Schmidt said. Schmidt hit Cabrera his first time up and struck him out the second time. “He’s such a prolific character in this sport. “Even with the off day yesterday, there wre a few (reliever) were still staying away from,” Boone said.

The Yankees scored the first two runs when a popup between the mound and home plate bounced off Alexander’s glove. Tonight, by evidence of the walks on both sides, you could tell it was hard for the pitchers to control the ball and it was tough (for the batters) to find hits.” A total of 14 pitchers took the mound on a blustery 43-degree night. Eduardo Rodriguez (0-1, 5.87 ERA) is looking for his first victory with the Tigers after signing a five-year contract as a free agent. “Not only for me (but) for the fans. I thought he used the slider and the cutter and his fastball all really well,’ Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.

Yankees' Gerrit Cole on early hook: 'A lot of four-letter words' (New York Post)

As Aaron Boone went to the mound to take out Gerrit Cole in the second inning, the Yankees ace pounded his hand into his glove five times.

“He had two out, and I just wanted him to get through it.” Robbie Grossman also got to a full count before hitting a sacrifice fly to cut the Yankees’ lead to 3-2. “It just hasn’t gone his way so far.” “I was trying to be too perfect.” Cole allowed a leadoff single to Miguel Cabrera then got Spencer Torkelson on a liner to third. The third walk of the inning — following a visit from pitching coach Matt Blake — was to Willi Castro and forced in a run to make it 3-1.

No more excuses: Yankees' Gerrit Cole needs to actually be an ace (Elite Sports NY)

Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole had another disastrous start against the Tigers. There is no way to justify this latest dud.

Cole is still the ace, and it’s still too early to completely panic. The bullpen is supposed to more or less have the night off when it’s his turn. It’s not like the bullpen only allowed three hits and three walks for the rest of the game. The wind chill was in the 30s, yet he only had three strikeouts. Cole threw 68 pitches and couldn’t even get six outs, giving up a pair of runs on five walks and a hit. Tuesday’s series opener against the Tigers was supposed to be different.

Good news and bad news as Yankees' bullpen carries team to victory (Yardbarker)

On Tuesday afternoon, the New York Yankees faced off against the Detroit Tigers, coming off of disappointing series against the Baltimore Orioles.

There will be a new Denver Broncos owner in place once the 2022 NFL season gets going in September. Outgoing CEO Joe Ellis has noted multiple times that the organization wants to have a new owner in the fold once the regular season starts. In Game 2, I think we get a game where Memphis is able to get out to a lead and hold it. In the case of the Grizzlies, I think it was the latter. And I guess the easiest way to do that would be to do something with Carey Price. So quickly Mike, my question to you is: If you’re the Montreal Canadiens, what would you do with Carey Price this summer? Would you be willing to retain money and trade him, or would you be bringing him back next season to play in net?” McKenna: “It’s such a hard thing to say, but I think the questions with Price is health, frankly. In the opener, Memphis looked like a team playing with the weight of expectations for the first time. I think there’s things to be positive about in Montreal.” Seravalli: “You take a look at the Habs' draft picks, as you said, 10 in the first four rounds, and the draft is being held in Montreal this year in July, the 7th and 8th. Minnesota is third in the Central Division and have clinched a berth in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Fleury is currently set to become a free agent in the offseason for the first time in his NHL career. "At the end of the day, it just comes to limiting those mistakes and getting the ball out and not taking those sacks." "I knew my body, physically, could still do what it could do and obviously I have a love for the game, I think I'll always have a love for the game," Brady explained. Per ESPN stats, Fields ended the 2021 season 28th overall with a 73.2 passer rating and with a league-worst 26.4 total QBR. Needless to say, he'll have to improve those numbers beginning in September if the Bears are going to commit to him as their future franchise player at the position. If the Yankees continue to rely on their bullpen at this rate, they will be burned out by the All-Star break, so general manager Brian Cashman may want to consider injecting a bit more starting talent.

Yankees news: Gerrit Cole just wanted to scream expletives after ... (ClutchPoints)

Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole had a very blunt reaction to his early exit on Tuesday against the Tigers.

When asked what he was thinking when he saw Boone coming out to get him, Cole said “a lot of four-letter words.” It’s hard to blame the Yankees starter for wanting to yell expletives into night sky, as he simply lost all command of his pitches, issuing five walks while allowing a pair of runs in 1 2/3 frames of work. Asked what was going through his mind at the time, Cole said, “A lot of four-letter words.” New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole had a rough outing on Tuesday night against the Detroit Tigers. The Yankees won the game, though it was no thanks to Cole, who endured the shortest outing of his career, as he was pulled in the second inning by manager Aaron Boone. Visibly disappointed on the mound and after the game, Cole delivered a blunt reaction to Boone’s quick hook, as reported by the New York Post.

Cole, 31 years old, faced four batters in the first inning, striking out three of them and walking the other. He entered Tuesday having started twice, allowing six runs (all earned) in 9 2/3 innings of work against the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays. Factoring in Tuesday's outing, Cole now has a 6.35 ERA and a 1.71 strikeout-to-walk ratio in three starts. Meanwhile, Cole had never thrown fewer than two innings during a big-league start.

Yankees ace Gerrit Cole wilts again in sad postgame interview vs ... (Yanks Go Yard)

New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole wilted again against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night, then gave a sad postgame interview for the ages.

The worst-case scenario is that Cole signed a nine-year deal with 1.5 great seasons left in his right arm, then lost 100 games of Season 1 to a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic. If Cole is a $324 million man who needs conditions to be pitch-perfect in order to succeed, the next seven seasons of his Yankees career will not go smoothly. He was just desperately waiting for the night to end. Cole’s three troubled starts in 2022, coming off a hamstring injury that sunk his Wild Card Game, have all painted a different picture of a struggling ace. In the second contest, only Vladdy Jr. tagged him, though the line score wasn’t up to expectations. Aces shake it off, though.

Fantasy Baseball Today: Gerrit Cole crashes; Alex Cobb injured ... (CBSSports.com)

Happy Wednesday, everyone! It was a big night in baseball on Tuesday after Monday's postponed games were in the books and there's a lot to get to today.

Every night the Fantasy Baseball Today team dives into all of the happenings around the MLB from top performers to injuries, trades and more. On Tuesday, he went 5 1/3 innings and allowed just three hits, two walks and one earned run while striking out a very healthy eight batters on route to his first win. He has a 59% groundball rate and is averaging 97 MPH on his fastball. Some of the issues for Cole in the early going include his command, allowing too many home runs and allowing a bunch of hard contact. It was a big night in baseball on Tuesday after Monday's postponed games were in the books and there's a lot to get to today. This was the shortest outing of his career and he walked in a run for the first time in his career. He went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Fried was a popular breakout pick for some, and when he's pitching like this it's easy to see why. Here's his slash: .390/.419/.512 -- with five RBI and four runs scored in just 41 at-bats. It was a weird night for Cole, who opened the game by striking out the side in the first inning. He went 2 for 4 with a two-run homer. It was another disaster outing for Cole. It was also a night of firsts for him.

Globe Life Field is quickly becoming a place to stack your hitters and wait for the big offensive days. Keep playing your guys versus the Rangers and hope that the offensive fireworks continue into the summer. How many of you benched Fried in daily leagues when you learned he was facing the Dodgers on the road tonight? He is already 3-0 on the season, and considering the Mets’ potent offense, it would be a disappointment if he doesn’t win 20 games at this point. After a shaky first start where he allowed five earned runs in less than six innings, Fried has righted the ship since. He was forced to leave early with an adductor strain and was immediately placed on the 10-day IL after the doubleheader finished yesterday. The NL West has another candidate for best early-season performance in Manny Machado. He homered again last night and has to be one of the top three or four candidates for rotisserie MVP through two weeks. The scary thing is that his walk rate (3.50/9 innings) is a career-high at this point. He leads the majors with six homers and is top-three with 14 RBI. If you rostered Cron, he is single-handedly carrying your power categories in the early going. The wheels then fell off and Cobb was forced to leave with an injury. That’s not terrible, but it’s a far cry from the 12 K/9 we have grown accustomed to in the past four years. It was a crazy day of news and injuries, so here are the top headlines from Tuesday’s games.

Cole is off to a shaky start in 2022, which puts a casts a little doubt on the Yankees and their pitching staff. Though it is still early, starting off in such a way for Cole has to be a concern for the Yankees, who signed him to a nine-year, $324 million contract prior to the 2020 season. The Yankees rotation has been performing well as of late, but Cole has not been a part of it.

Angels radio announcers duped by Gerrit Cole joke (nj.com)

The Los Angeles Angels broadcasters fell for a fake Gerrit Cole story that said Cole would donate 600 MacBooks if he went over two innings Tuesday.

In the episode, Michael eventually isn’t able to keep this promise due to financial troubles. He ended up getting taken out of the game going an inning and two-thirds.” “He had promised to an underprivileged school in New York before that ballgame that he would donate 600 MacBooks if he went 2 innings or more tonight in that ballgame,” broadcaster Terry Smith said during the Angels’ five-run fifth inning.

Should Yankees worry about Gerrit Cole right now? Analysis (nj.com)

Cole lasted just 1 2/3 innings, unable to locate pitches at crucial moments against an unspectacular Detroit Tigers lineup. He gave up two runs, but walked five ...

That was likely in response to the cold. YES, THEY’RE IN TROUBLE: On Tuesday, Cole couldn’t beat the Tigers. The Yankees need him to step up against the best competition, and he didn’t deliver ace results against the Red Sox on Opening Day or against the Blue Jays — teams expected to battle with the Yankees for the division crown. It’s difficult to control a slider if you can’t grip the baseball in the cold. He works down in the zone more often, relying on his slider, changeup and, now, cutter mix. On Tuesday, he talked about still deciphering what went wrong, and while he acknowledged that the cold didn’t help (it was 43 degrees at first pitch), he didn’t use the weather as a crutch. He must support his No. 1 starter, let alone through the first three starts of a season in which the Yankees hope Cole can make approximately 32 of them. Also, his pregame tantrum on Opening Day, and being so thrown off by the schedule delay that it affected his pitching must have been disappointing for the Yankees. They also turned off the two-strike horn at Yankee Stadium for him for his last start after he said he didn’t like it and it didn’t seem to help much. That’s three matchups with Toronto’s beast lineup roughly within the first month of the season. In Cole’s three starts this season, he hasn’t produced the performances expected of a $324 million arm. “I really believe he’s poised for a big year for us,” Boone said. “He’s going to carry us for a long stretch. He gave up two runs, but walked five, including four in the second inning.
