Why you should teach about climate change this Earth Day (Chalkbeat Colorado)

For some of the elementary teachers I have worked with, it has been helpful to think about climate change as not exclusively the domain of science teaching and learning. This Earth Day, I hope my fellow elementary educators will embrace the opportunity to do our part to contribute to climate action through our teaching. Others of us really want to address climate change in our teaching, but feel constrained by our curricula or great pressure to make up for lessons students might have missed because of the disruptions of the pandemic. As a teacher educator and educational researcher, I have spent the past couple of years watching colleagues do this work in age-appropriate ways. My goals were for students to learn about the importance of recycling and to develop an appreciation for nature. Now, as a parent of a kindergartener and second grader in Chicago Public Schools, I’ve worked on countless of these projects with my own children.

Earth Day's Wisconsin origins (Marquette Wire)

Nelson, who was inspired by former Wisconsin governor “Fighting” Bob Lafollette for his progressive mentality, worked for environmental prosperity.

In 1992 the United Nations had an Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, heralding the impact socio-economic humanity had on the environment. This national green gathering was heard all the way in Washington, D.C. and brought bureaucrats to think critically about their involvement in protecting the environment. In response, Nelson orchestrated a national grassroots protest April 22, 1970, which was celebrated as the first Earth Day. That Earth Day people marched the car-free streets of New York. Some wore face masks to shed light on poor air quality and pollution. These events pushed environmental awareness to the forefront and united demographics to understand the impact humanity has on the environment. First celebrated nationally in the United States on April 22, Earth Day’s debut demonstration observed 20 million people advocating for environmental awareness.

Anusha Narayanan commentary: Earth Day is a benchmark of our past (West Central Tribune)

Black and brown, Latinx/Latine and indigenous peoples, new Americans, and migrant workers have been stewards of these lands for centuries.

We have a chance to avoid the extinction of humanity, but we need all hands on deck. I fight for this future for my family in India, and the flooding, droughts and pollution they already experience that will only worsen if we don’t take action to reduce global emissions. Put simply, these pledges are too often just corporate attempts to pass the buck and sacrifice people’s health while hoping that others will compensate for their destructive practices instead of working to reduce the amount of pollution they create. They are failing to live up to the Paris Agreement, dragging their feet in declaring a climate emergency, continuing to sacrifice the health and safety of communities, and failing to deliver a clean energy future we need to secure a livable future. A big reason for this is climate disinformation that continues to spread on social media channels, blatant greenwashing from corporations, as well as politicians prioritizing the needs of corporations over the people they were elected to serve. It is also an opportunity to learn how to spot climate disinformation and false solutions that serve as nice talking points while companies increase emissions.

John Oppermann, the Earth Day Initiative's Executive Director, answered some questions about the organization he leads.

The recent IPCC reports are a good resource to get an understanding of where we’re at in dealing with the climate crisis and the path forward. So whatever you are doing, whether it’s buying an electric vehicle or installing solar panels, be loud about it and communicate that to decision makers in business and government so they receive the signal that there is demand for more sustainable systems. I connect buyers and sellers in the green and healthy home space. The climate crisis is really our most pressing challenge and we’re far behind in taking action to address it. The world’s attention has rightfully turned to COVID and the invasion of Ukraine in the last few years, but we want to pivot and innovate to provide ways for people to continue to come together, even virtually, to push forward for real common solutions that will address the looming climate crisis. As Executive Director, I oversee our annual events and year-round programs that include our large-scale in-person events in NYC, and our virtual events that in recent years have included folks like Bill Nye, Elizabeth Warren, Alexandria Villasenor, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Bill McKibben. I also host our Parts Per Million podcast that has focused on being a climate communicator.
