'The Batman' director Matt Reeves explains The Joker scene - CNN (CNN)

The director explains a scene in the film was not intended as an Easter egg.

"A lot of people ask me, 'Is this a set up for another movie?' and to be honest it really isn't," Reeves says in the commentary. Reeves continued: "So that was critical, actually, to the ending of the movie and to the finishing of the Riddler's arc as well. What we'll do with these characters in the future remains to be seen, but it was never meant to be an Easter egg scene, to say like, 'Oh guess who we're using in the next movie.' It was meant to be something delicious for the audience to sort of experience those two characters meeting, and in fact for the Unseen Prisoner to say to him, 'Riddle me this,' which is of course right out of 'Batman' 66."

The British horror film and Netflix Original “Choose or Die” starring Asa Butterfield and Robert Englund scored an immediate #1 at the streamer. That makes its #3 spot at Vudu particularly impressive; $2.99 is a disadvantage for a platform that charts by revenue. From a marketing perspective, Warners’ biggest film of the year is a major boost for its subscriber base. At $29.99, buyers can own the film as a digital download, usually not an initial option. “Spider-Man” is #1 again for the fifth week on all three charts we follow, an unprecedented achievement and one that “The Batman” will not repeat. Something is coming.” Every ending is a new beginning. It is the Joker.” As is standard in modern superhero movies, at the end credits of The Batman, we see a simple green question mark appear on the screen, which show us the words, “GOOD BYE?” alongside a link to a website: www.rataalada.com. Star of Dunkirk, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer and The Green Night, the director confirmed the 29-year-old Dubliners was the man who portrayed the cameo role of the Joker in his new movie, although those hoping for a sequel which see the Irishman in more than a cameo may be disappointed. Who is The Joker in the new Batman? Will there be a Batman sequel?

Box Office: Why 'The Batman' Stands Out From Its Superhero ... (Forbes)

'The Batman' has earned more than any other comic book "part one" that wasn't also "the first time that superhero has gotten their own movie."

Iron Man was the first Iron Man movie, Wonder Woman was the first Wonder Woman movie. Second, this is the fourth “new” live-action Batman franchise (fifth if you count Batman Forever as a soft reboot) since 1989, with Pattinson being the sixth such actor to don the cowl in 33 years. First, Batman movies tend to do closer to 50/50 in terms of domestic/overseas business, although The Dark Knight Rises ($449 million out of $1.084 billion) is an exception. Wonder Woman clicked in the “first year of Trump” zeitgeist as “the movie we need right now,” the first Spider-Man arrived six months after the 9/11 attacks and the first Iron Man kicked-started the MCU while initially pitched as a comic book superhero movie (complete with older movie stars like Robert Downey Jr., Jeff Bridges and Gwynneth Paltrow) for audiences otherwise too cool for comic book superhero movies. But, yes, all of those movies represented “the first time” those (relatively) popular, well-liked and/or iconic characters got their own big-budget theatrical movie. I have no idea how many people watched The Batman on its first day over at HBO Max, nor do I know how many will choose to rent (for $25) or buy (for $32) the film now that it’s available on every major VOD platform.

Matt Reeves Explains Why He Kept Joker Scene In The Batman (Screen Rant)

The Batman director Matt Reeves has revealed why he kept the mysterious Joker scene in the final cut of his movie, despite removing his earlier scene.

During the director's commentary for The Batman (as reported by The Wrap), Reeves has revealed exactly why he left the scene in the movie, despite removing other references to the Joker. Reeves has admitted that while many fans have asked if this is a set up for a sequel to The Batman, he never saw it that way. Whether or not the Joker is used in the future, this particular scene does not take away from The Batman being an epic installment in the legacy of the hero. Close to the end of The Batman, there is a scene in which the Riddler is shown locked in Arkham Asylum in a neighboring cell to an obscured stranger who offers to be his friend.

In order to really hammer home the Cobain inspiration, makeup designer Naomi Donne channeled the smudged black eyeliner frequently donned by Kurt, and incorporated it into the aesthetic look of Batman. "The whole Kurt Cobain black eye makeup really struck me, and I liked the idea that he had the remains of his Batman makeup on," said Donne. "Slightly moody and rock and roll-y." When "Nevermind" the album from which "Something in the Way" hails, had reached the #1 spot on the U.S. Charts, Cobain was still living in his car. "He doesn't look like a playboy," said Durran. "He's more like a tortured soul." A brooding, tortured Bruce Wayne is a fresh take on the character, and one that allows us to see an entirely new way for the famed orphan heir to process the murder of his parents. "I wanted him to be someone whose parents had been larger than life; philanthropic figures who everyone revered as Gotham royalty and in the wake of their tragic deaths, instead of fostering the image of the storied Waynes, he completely withdrew, and became what I saw as an almost rockstar-like recluse." "I wanted him to feel almost like a fallen American prince," he said in the book.

At the same time, there’s something oddly familiar about this take on Penguin. That’s because his disfigured appearance was inspired by a very specific and very iconic movie gangster. Rather than filming Pattinson and his co-stars against simple green screen backgrounds, volume capture allows the crew to project complex lighting, simulating everything from the neon glow of Gotham’s red light district to the headlights of passing cars. The Art of The Batman gives us a much better look at the inner workings of the Batsuit and its hidden gadgets, including the spring-loaded grapple gun that Dillon reveals was directly inspired by Robert De Niro’s character in Taxi Driver. Batman isn’t the only character who relies on real-world military surplus gear to fill out his arsenal in the movie. But at least he can teach the boy how to survive the mean streets of Gotham. Farrell’s prosthetic nose and brow modeled very closely on actor John Cazale, who played Fredo Corleone in the Godfather movies. One of the biggest challenges in translating Batman into live-action has been creating a Batsuit that, you know, actually allows Batman to move and fight. The book even settles one of the bigger questions surrounding the film. That’s where the new book The Art of The Batman comes in. He doesn’t care about any of the traditional family history anymore. The Batsuit may look bulky, but there’s a flexible core underneath all that armor. It turns out that no fewer than four Batmobiles were built for the film’s production.

Who Plays The Joker In 'The Batman'? (Decider)

So it's no surprise that this big-name film depicting the latest iteration of DC Comics' classic character, Batman, is turning heads thanks to the understated ...

We never clearly see this character who is credited as “Unseen Arkham Prisoner,” but judging by his distinctive laugh (as well as confirmation from director Matt Reeves, himself), we’re left with no doubt that The Joker is there, hanging around, just waiting for the chance to cause some havoc. To set the record straight, The Batman actually doesn’t have a whole lot to do with The Joker. This time around, the big baddie is The Riddler (Paul Dano), who has been targeting Gotham City’s elite through a series of murders and leaving a trail of cryptic clues in his wake. Since it premiered in theaters in March, The Batman has been the hottest movie-related topic of conversation (that doesn’t involve one grown man slapping another grown man on live television during an awards show being broadcast to a worldwide audience). Now that the superhero crime-drama is available on HBO Max, it is open to an even wider audience that has the power to pause and rewind.

Matt Reeves Confirms Detail Everyone Missed in The Batman (MovieWeb)

The detail concerns a mise-en-scène detail from a sequence featuring Gotham's Iceberg Lounge run by Penguin.

With the film now available on streaming for HBO Max, the hunt will gain momentum. Earlier in the film, Batman also discovers several pictures of officials from the court, the mayor's office, and the police department frequenting the lounge, all of which were taken by Riddler. The detail also brings full circle those moments where Riddler had spied on them. Confirming this detail, Matt Reeves added detail to his vision for the DC Comics story while also proving that he indeed had tried to surpass previous Batman films in terms of setting, tone, and production design.

The Batman's Other Deleted Scene Teases The Penguin's Gotham ... (Game Rant)

The Batman's newly surfaced deleted scene reveals the Penguin's fondness for Zoe Kravitz's Selina Kyle and his big plans for Gotham.

In The Batman, Selina is implied to be familiar with the 44 Bellow Club, as she and her roommate Annika had already worked some nights there, whereas in the newly revealed scene the Penguin's behavior seems to suggest it’d be her first time down there. The setup is rather simple, Selina enters the Penguin's office during the mission she and Batman had planned to gain further intel on the unsolved murders and terrifying Gotham higher-ups. The scene had been confirmed to be making its way onto The Batman's home edition just a few weeks after the studio had released the Batman and Joker interrogation at Arkham Asylum, which was ultimately cut from the movie as well.

The Batman has arrived on HBO Max and other streaming services, and bonus content from the film is going viral on social media!

Yes, Pattinson is the best Batman we've seen on-screen – but he's also the most solemn and boring version of Bruce Wayne we've gotten so far... The days were long shooting this film (even the final runtime was about three hours!) and as a smoker, Pattinson made efficient use of his Utility Belt by pulling this move. As we said in the review: Matt Reeves and his cinematographer, Oscar-nominee Greig Fraser (Dune), have captured the iconography of Batman, his supporting cast, and Gotham City better than any filmmakers before them. Case in point: a new behind-the-scenes video from The Batman shows star Robert Pattinson on set and in costume as Batman in between takes. A small detail in Catwoman's apartment confirms why there are still residents living in Gotham, one of the most crime-ridden cities ever.

At any rate, 492 dollars for Selina Kyle's city apartment seems to be quite the deal (with plenty of room for multiple roaming cats). Ultimately, the Waynes were murdered and their legacy was tainted, leaving their son Bruce to forge a new legacy as the Batman, defending the people of Gotham (low rent and all). Following their first face-to-face alteration and the kidnapping of Selina's girlfriend Annika, Batman enters Catwoman's apartment where the two of them agree to work together.
