Tras el accidente, Rincón fue trasladado a la Clínica Imbanaco en Cali, que desde el lunes informó constantemente sobre su estado de salud. Además del gol contra Alemania, marcó dos goles en el recordado 5-0 contra Argentina en Buenos Aires en 1993. Al conductor del autobús y a dos acompañantes del exjugador se les realizó una prueba de alcoholemia y no mostraban evidencias de alcohol. Por el momento se desconoce si una cuarta persona iba en el automóvil donde viajaba el exfutbolista. Rincón no conducía el vehículo, según las autoridades. Rincón, de 55 años, murió en Cali, Colombia, luego de tres días hospitalizado.
