If there aren't any options, your last resort is to lie face down with your hands over your head in a ditch or ravine. If you live in a house: The best shelter option for people who live in houses is their basement, the agency says. A bathroom may be your best choice if you can't find a lower-level alternative. If you can't access a lower floor, find an interior room in your apartment, away from windows. A warning can be issued anywhere from an hour ahead of a storm to even just a few minutes before, so it's important to know where your best bet for shelter is ahead of time.
