Pelicans odds vs. Spurs: Do-or-die game in New Orleans (Pelican Debrief)

The New Orleans Pelicans are favored against the pesky San Antonio Spurs, but will they be able to take care of business at home?

They were under that combined in three of the four matchups this season and there could be some early nerves that lead to poor shooting. He has logged two triple-doubles against the Pelicans this season and had 31 points and 12 assists in a Spurs’ win back in February. I like New Orleans to win 120-105 and move on to face the Clippers for a chance at the playoffs. The money lines are set at -240 for New Orleans and +190 for the Spurs. Only one of their four games has been close, so I’d take the Pelicans to cover and get the better odds (-108). Offensively the Pelicans just have to do their thing, be patient and use their experience against the young Spurs. Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum should be able to feast in the mid-range and they can play through Jonas Valanciunas in the post at times as well. The Pelicans will take on the San Antonio Spurs in what will hopefully be the first game of the NBA play-in tournament for New Orleans.

McCollum and Ingram are huge reasons why New Orleans will be a tough out against the Clippers on Friday, and possibly beyond if they can make it to the first round against the Phoenix Suns. Then you look at next season, with a healthy Zion Williamson back in the fold, and suddenly the Pelicans seem like a serious contender in the West. He also shot a respectable 34 percent from 3-point range this season and went 2-for-4 on Wednesday en route to 12 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Already a darling of NBA Twitter, the 23-year-old rookie showcased his unique defensive talents on the national stage on Wednesday, making countless plays that seemingly only he could make. The Pelicans are only shooting 30% from 3-point corners versus the Spurs this season, which would rank 21st in the league. The only anomaly was a Spurs win in which the Pelicans won the rebounding battle. They rank 27th in the league in 3-point percentage and 28th in 3's made per game. The story in that game was that the Spurs shot over 50% from the field and knocked down 14 3-pointers so there weren't many chances to rebound the basketball. Leonard once explained the meaning of the statement, "I used to say that back when I was in high school and college. The Spurs are in New Orleans and need a win to keep playing this season.

I have to say that I have a good feeling about tonight, but the Spurs will need to get away from the slow starts they’ve been having recently to keep the crowd out of the game. If the Spurs can beat the Pelicans tonight, they would be halfway there (on a wing and a prayer) to the play-in finale, with a 9:00 PM Friday matchup against the Clippers in Los Angeles, televised on TNT. Dejounte Murray will have to contain Jose Alvarado who used his size against Tre Jones in the last game to good effect.

The Clips will need another defensive effort like that again. The New Orleans Pelicans beat the Spurs 113-103 with help from CJ McCollum and will advance to play the Clippers for the 8th seed in the NBA Playoffs.

The Smoothie King Center was rocking, which also helped propel the Pelicans to victory. This was the reason the Pels went out and traded for McCollum, as they needed someone who had some playoff experience and the ability to carry the offense at times. The bench was outscored 32-20, but made important hustle plays that helped keep the momentum for New Orleans.

Now, he says, McCollum is "the one trying to impart the message." At both, McCollum was seated next to Zion Williamson, who had been away from the team when McCollum arrived in New Orleans while he recovered from a season-long foot injury. In his first 25 games with New Orleans (subtracting a five-minute, zero-point performance in the regular-season finale), McCollum is averaging 25.2 points, 6.0 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game on 49.5% shooting. "And I think that's how you build chemistry," McCollum says. Guys respect him and have seen him in this league." McCollum no longer has an All-Star veteran to be the primary voice of the franchise. LEADING TO THE Trail Blazers' locker room inside the Moda Center is a reminder of one of the most iconic plays in McCollum's tenure with the organization. The Clippers will host the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday in the NBA-play in game for the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

That shouldn’t throw a major wrench into New Orleans’ preparation, however, because Powell played New Orleans in November with Portland, and the Trail Blazers and Clippers overlap significantly in what they run, and how, because of relationships between the coaching staffs. New Orleans won the season series 3-1, with the lone loss in the most recent game, a 119-100 Clippers victory on April 3. For the Clippers, that means containing McCollum, acquired in a trade with Portland. McCollum made just seven of his 18 shots in the early April loss and got to the free-throw line four times.
