City make two changes for Atletico trip as Mahrez and Gundogan start (Manchester City FC)

Pep Guardiola makes two changes for City's UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg trip to Atletico Madrid.

Overall, only Real Madrid have won more of their first 100 games in the Champions League (57). This will be Guardiola’s first away game at the Wanda Metropolitano. • Atlético de Madrid have lost five of their last seven matches against English sides in the Champions League (W1 D1), with their only win in this run coming away to Manchester United in the previous round. • After a run of nine victories in 10 home games between November 2017 and October 2020, Atlético Madrid are winless in their last seven home games in the Champions League (D4 L3) - their last win in the competition on home soil came in October 2020 (3-2 v RB Salzburg). • Riyad Mahrez has scored six goals across his last six away games in the Champions League. The Algerian has scored in three consecutive away games in the knockout stages of the competition; should he score in this match, only Cristiano Ronaldo will have scored in more such games consecutively (6 - 2013-2015). Indeed, it’s a measure of City’s consistency that only Real Madrid have won more games (57) in the course of their first 100 Champions League fixtures.

Atletico Madrid vs. Manchester City: What Simeone can learn from ... (CBSSports.com)

Unsurprisingly, Atleti finished with 0.00 expected goals since they did not record a single shot, which is the wrong kind of record to set. How rare was that?

It's unlikely, especially with the personnel, that they will be able to greatly increase their possession, and the expectation will be for Manchester City to score. Atleti have to be ready, quick to move the ball into space and show the quality they have in attack. Atleti, out of any team, have the ability to turn this around and pull off a shocker, but expect City to score. They need to rediscover their aggression, believe in their defense with less numbers and simply get more men into attacking situation as early as possible. It's obvious that the approach will be different at home, but if they miss the mark again with whatever changes they make, they'll simply be reduced to spectators the rest of the way and see their European dream elude them once again. Much too often it was either Joao Felix or Antoine Griezmann in no-man's land, surrounded by sky-blue shirts and with the only option being to try and draw a foul. Unsurprisingly, Atleti finished with 0.00 expected goals since they did not record a single shot, which is the wrong kind of record to set. They've done it to Liverpool, Bayern Munich and plenty of others with Simeone having two UCL final appearances and a pair of Europa and La Liga titles to his name. They regularly had all 11 players behind the ball but could not get the result they wanted because City prevented Diego Simeone's attack from functioning properly in what proved to be, tactically, his most challenging match of the season. Atleti are not a team that possess the ball much. As a result, no one is seems to be convinced that they can turn this tie come Wednesday during the second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano (3 p.m. ET A 1-0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad last Tuesday was far from ideal as the reigning La Liga champions could not even produce a single chance on goal.

Man City Suffers for Its Champions League Semifinal Place (Sports Illustrated)

Atlético Madrid rolled out the royal cholismo treatment for Pep Guardiola's side, which persevered nevertheless to return to Europe's final four.

Atlético went direct and pressed hard and for a time, as the atmosphere swelled, City looked rattled. One delicious ball with the outside of his boot from Riyad Mahrez cut Atlético open and led to İlkay Gündoğan rolling a shot against the post. City had roughly two-thirds of the ball and, without overcommitting, did pose a consistent threat in the first half. Instead, six yellow cards—including the one that gave Felipe his marching orders—were doled out between the first and seventh minutes of stoppage time. Felipe spent three minutes refusing to leave the field, time Atlético could have used to try to find an equalizer when the feeling was that it may have indeed been coming. But if Pep Guardiola was owed some fortune against anybody it is Diego Simeone, given the way his Bayern Munich side lost on away goals to Atlético in the 2016 semifinals despite having dominated both legs.

Felipe sent off late as Manchester City battle past feisty Atlético Madrid (The Guardian)

Manchester City held on through a fractious second half to draw 0-0 with Atlético Madrid and progress to the Champions League semi-final.

City had gone close from an early corner, Stones heading high, and they created the big chance of the opening period in the 30th minute. From the restart, they pushed high, bringing the aggression and they had numerous flickers in front of goal, which the home fans were ultra quick to get behind. Felipe had left him dazed and bloodied after jumping into him in a 12th minute aerial challenge, wiping him out with a ferocious upper body barge. The heart-in-mouth moments for the travelling City support continued to come. Grealish had called Savic the C-word during the melee, which led to Savic grabbing his hair. With Foden down, all hell broke loose, another Atlético defender, Stefan Savic, trying to lift him to his feet and being shooed away by Oleksandr Zinchenko, who was an unused City substitute, as everybody converged.

In the past, Man City have been guilty of allowing Champions League knockout ties to descend into chaos, but they handled Atletico Madrid well.

At the Etihad last week, they didn't look keen to engage with City's blue shirts much beyond the edge of their own penalty area but at home they suddenly found a whole other half to play in. Manchester City will meet Real Madrid in the more anticipated of the two semifinals. The 29-year-old provided cover for the defense and was often the facilitator to begin Atletico's attacking moves. A quick sequence in the 87th minute summed up how Manchester City was managing to stymie those efforts but only just so. Savic and Kondogbia totally dominating their areas of the pitch. In the 30th minute, Manchester City supporters might have been wondering whether it was going to be one of those nights. Atletico Madrid vs. Manchester City takeaways: Simeone's dark arts ... (CBSSports.com)

Three things we learned as City march to the Champions League semifinal.

City are considered to be one of the best teams in Europe, so it's only fitting that they have to defeat one of the best teams in Champions League history as they look to win their first title. In the 91st minute, Felipe took down Phil Foden to get his second yellow card and an early shower, but not before the benches cleared in a coming together from the players as they pushed and shoved each other. The clash would also rear its head in the tunnel after the match with words being exchanged and at least something being thrown which could lead to a fine from UEFA. Jack Grealish and Stefan Savic took center stage during that skirmish, as the two exchanged words which resulted in Savic yanking Grelish's hair. It was quite the difference as the first half saw City take eight shots to Atletico's one but only producing an xG of 0.61. They embody the fiery spirit of their manager and will do whatever is needed to wind up the other team and hope that they're frustrated enough to make a mistake.

Manchester City Fights Off Atlético Madrid in Champions League (The New York Times)

City, a team shaped by style, showed it was also skilled in the dark arts as eliminated Atlético Madrid and moved a step closer to its first Champions ...

It is the way it is because it works. Often, it is so easy to be dazzled by the brilliance of Guardiola’s side that its character, its courage, is overlooked. Atlético is not the way it is for fun. City does not wilt and it does not doubt; it keeps going, remorselessly, absolute in its conviction that it will be proved right in the end. He knows there are times when that is what matters, that is what counts. That is as much part of Guardiola’s recipe as anything else. There is no team more associated with beauty than Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. He has come, over the years, to stand as an embodiment of soccer’s higher values, its ultimate arbiter of taste, its aesthete in chief. Atlético should, by rights, be a heroic underdog among Europe’s elite, a countercultural alternative to the hegemony of pressing and possession. No injury was shaken off; even the most minor bump and bruise warranted an extended period of treatment. Simeone has spent a decade crafting a team in his own image, one that plays, just as he did, with a “knife between its teeth.” There were flashes, of course, Atlético Madrid charging forward, desperately hunting the goal that would break Manchester City’s resistance and take the game into extra time, extend their stay in the Champions League for another 30 minutes or, just maybe, another few weeks. There was quite a lot of time-wasting.

It is expected to appoint a disciplinary inspector once the relevant reports have arrived.
