The Raiders Are Finally Treating Derek Carr Like a Franchise ... (Sports Illustrated)

The quarterback has been a cornerstone in Vegas through coaching changes and controversy.

His on-field improvements have synced with a chaotic infusion of quarterbacking talent in the AFC West and a complete dearth of overall talent at the position elsewhere in the league. At least that is the hope when you treat Carr like a franchise quarterback for the first time in his adult life. The counterargument to handing Carr a fistful of money ignores how much better he’s become amid the storms. Here’s a guy who had to man the fort when said television personality tumbled his way out of town thanks to a leak of his troubling emails with misogynistic, anti-LGBTQ and racist leanings. Carr had to become the consciousness of a locker room after Henry Ruggs III’s horrifying and fatal car crash, handling the most delicate of press conferences and other public outings with a modicum of maturity. The Raiders installed a traditionally capable offensive mind as head coach in Josh McDaniels. They traded for Davante Adams, giving Carr an established veteran No. 1 for the first time in his career.

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has agreed to a three-year contract extension worth $121.5 million, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and multiple reports.

"And I didn't want that to ever happen again." Hopefully we can build on that, I can finish and just do what I set out to do nine years ago, and that was to win a championship." Carr is coming off a season with a career-best 4,804 passing yards and had 23 touchdowns, a career-worst 14 interceptions and 40 sacks, the second-highest total of his eight-year career. "He has been a great example of someone who always puts the team first and we appreciate his desire to keep doing that while leading on and off the field. "Derek Carr has been the leader of this franchise for a long time and we are thrilled to continue that relationship moving forward," McDaniels said in a statement released by the team. "I hope people can hear my heart on that -- that I was dead serious when I [said] that.

Since entering the league in 2014, Carr ranks fourth in the NFL in passing yards and 10th in passing touchdowns. It is clear how much Derek cares about this organization, his teammates and winning.

Derek Carr contract details: Raiders keeping longest-tenured AFC ... (Sporting News)

The Raiders are sticking veteran David Carr for four more seasons and included a no-trade clause in his new deal.

The longest-tenured quarterback in the AFC, the Raiders watched team after team play quarterback musical chairs last season. The Raiders lost in the first round at Cincinnati in January. It's also a bit of a gamble by the Raiders, but it isn't an unreasonable one. Carr has led the Raiders to two playoff appearances in eight seasons, although he was unable to play in the first playoff appearance in 2016 due to injury after going 12-3 in the regular season. Carr led the Raiders to a playoff appearance in the grueling AFC West last season, and with even more weapons at his disposal this year he'll look to do so again in an even tougher division. Carr threw for a career-high 282.6 yards per game last year, along with 23 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

My best friend (Khalil Mack) left, and I didn't want that to happen ever again. "I've only wanted to be a Raider," Carr said in a press conference. Carr is set to earn an average of $40.5 million per year under his new extension, ranking fifth among all quarterbacks in average annual salary. "The way we structured it, I went through a heartbreak already the last time I signed my contract. Those who disagree might want to take some time to review the quarterback's recent performance. The price of good-but-not-elite quarterback play has risen in accordance with the most lucrative deals handed to the league's top signal-callers.

After reuniting Derek Carr with college teammate Davante Adams, the Raiders took care of their quarterback in another major way.

“He has been a great example of someone who always puts the team first and we appreciate his desire to keep doing that while leading on and off the field. Carr helped provide a stabilizing presence for the team, which under the direction of interim coach Rich Bisaccia still managed to go 10-7 and reach the playoffs, ending a five-year drought. “Derek Carr has been the leader of this franchise for a long time and we are thrilled to continue that relationship moving forward,” McDaniels said in a statement.

There will be a sweet spot in there hopefully for everybody, and we’ll be excited to go forward like that.” Carr’s deal includes a no-trade clause (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo), a rarity in the NFL enjoyed by only about a dozen players. This would give the Raiders a small window to work out a trade in 2023, but Carr’s no-trade clause gives him final say on any potential escape-hatch deal for the team. “Derek’s fit on the team, as a player, is obviously what we’re looking for and what we’re trying to build around,” McDaniels said recently. Now, Carr’s got a fat new contract and an old friend in Adams, his former teammate at Fresno State. 5:12pm: Carr’s contract contains a $65.5MM injury guarantee, according to SI.com’s Albert Breer, and the deal will give the ninth-year veteran a $5.2MM raise in 2022 (Twitter link). Carr will make $24.9MM fully guaranteed in 2022, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk notes.

The Raiders made good on their word to keep Carr in uniform with a $121.5M deal.

With two of the most important positions in football now locked in, the Raiders are ready to build on the late-season success they found in 2021, but this time with high-profile names leading the charge alongside Carr. This is what McDaniels is hoping to build upon, and he only sees Carr as the QB to help him do it. The three-time Pro Bowler had previously ingratiated himself with Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock, former head coach and former general manager, respectively, who both continuously opted against moving on from Carr to this point.

We're definitely blessed and fortunate to be able to do that and hopefully we can find some of that Fresno State magic that we had back then." Now the fact we get to that do in the NFL, with the team we want to do it with, not a lot of people get to do that. "I was on the phone with him a lot and we were trying to figure things out and see how we can do it," Carr told Raiders.com of the Adams trade. "This offense has zero total yards, we have no points on the board. "I want them to see that in whatever God has called them to be – doesn't even have to be football – but if you work as hard as you can, you can accomplish things like this too," Carr said. Carr has made just one playoff start with the Raiders in his career.

"I know we have to earn that spot, I think we were a fifth seed something like that, and now we have to earn more than that. I like that kind of thought process better, so I'm going to keep that underdog mentality -- and that chip on the shoulder mindset," Carr said on returning to the playoffs. Derek Carr didn't have the opportunity to start a playoff game until last season, when the Las Vegas Raiders earned a playoff berth in a "winner-take-all" Week 18 showdown.

The main thing to me was, like, there were certain things that were important to me and after that, I was like, you know how to structure this. Waller has two years left on his deal, but his average per year is currently 17th and has no guaranteed money left on the deal. And so, that was what was important to us. He deserved it too, but new head coach Jon Gruden had a number in mind, dug in on it and ended up trading Mack instead, setting the Raiders defense back for years. When Carr signed his first extension, it made him the NFL’s first ever $25 million man. Today the long expected contract extension for Derek Carr was officially done.
