Astros vs. Diamondbacks - Game Recap - April 13, 2022 - ESPN (ESPN)

Get a recap of the Houston Astros vs. Arizona Diamondbacks baseball game.

Oliver Perez (1-1) got the last out of the 10th. Geraldo Perdomo and Cooper Hummel followed with walks off Pressly to load the bases. Arizona leadoff hitter Cooper Hummel reached base five times, four times via walks and once on a single. “I think we’re delivering some body blows, we’re getting runners on base, and eventually someone’s going to slug at the right time.” This time, he helped the D-backs snap a four-game skid despite leaving 14 runners on base. “If the ball leaves the yard, that’s great,” Beer said.

Houston Astros: Clutch hitting nowhere to be found in loss to ... (Houston Chronicle)

PHOENIX — After nine innings absent of anything considered clutch, Major League Baseball stepped in to spare its fans from anything more.

Valdez needed 23 pitches to finish the first and 26 apiece during the second and third. The Astros refused to capitalize. The league had a .690 OPS and .231 batting average prior to Wednesday’s games. The two offenses teamed to strand 21 baserunners and finish 1-for-19 with runners in scoring position during the first nine innings. Hitters are always behind pitchers during the first week or so of the season. Ketel Marte struck a sacrifice fly to score Seth Beer, who provided the game-tying single through the Astros’ drawn-in infield.

Astros: RHP Lance McCullers Jr. was on the field before the game and threw 25 times from 60 feet. Strom had a successful run as the Astros' pitching coach from 2014-21. But that was the only big hit for Arizona's struggling offense, which is batting just .130 through five games. The game was tied at 1 in the ninth when the Astros pieced together their rally against Mark Melancon (0-1), which was started by Siri's double into right-center. “I knew it was a risk,” Siri said of his dash to second. PHOENIX (AP) — Jose Siri could have been content with a single in the ninth inning.

D-backs Game Preview, #6: 4/12 vs. Astros (AZ Snake Pit)

Five games in, and the team's free taco quotient is 20%, with the 10-5 defeat to the Padres on Saturday night being the sole instance thereof in 2022.

The worst were the 1966 Athletics, then in Kansas City, who started off the year by hitting .177/.243/.217 across 12 games in April, for a .459 OPS and a 38 sOPS+. The Diamondbacks are at .130/.257/.260 for a .518 OPS and a relatively robust 51 sOPS+. What’s most remarkable about the Athletics that year, was that they hit precisely one home-run over their first twenty-two games, covering a total of 699 at-bats. I’d also wager it has been a long time - if ever - since a team has had more walks than hits after the first five games in a season, as the Diamondbacks have had so far (24 to 19). But with that and reasonable power (their HR% of 2.9% is also above league average), the D-backs’ overall offensive production barely cracks the top 10 worst by sOPS+ i.e. relative to the league, for a calendar month in the live-ball era (min 150 PA). So far, they have batted a feeble .130. All of Arizona’s hitters have a total 19 hits: Wander Franco of the Rays and Steven Kwan of the Guardians have combined for more than that (21). As a yardstick, the all-time low for batting average over a calendar month in the live-ball era is .171, by the Padres in June 2014. Merrill Kelly - RHP Martin Maldonado - C Carson Kelly - C

Houston Astros vs. Arizona Diamondbacks picks, predictions: Who ... (AZCentral.com)

The Arizona Diamondbacks host the Houston Astros at Chase Field in Phoenix on Wednesday. Who will win the game?

The Astros are 5-1 in the last six meetings. The under is 5-2 in the Astros last seven road games. The Astros are 1-4 in their last five interleague road games. The Diamondbacks are 38-100 in their last 138 games. Houston is 4-1 in their last five while Arizona is 1-4 in their last five. Tipico has no influence over nor are any such revenues in any way dependent on or linked to the newsrooms or news coverage. They’re the better team, have the better lineup, and will have the better pitcher on the mound. I think the total is way too high in this one, I'll gladly take the under." Merill Kelly also had a good start, with zero runs on 4 hits in 4 innings. It writes: "Framber Valdez played well in his season debut, winning 3-1 over the Los Angeles Angels. Through 6.2 innings, Valdez had zero runs on 2 hits and 6 strikeouts. JD Yonke writes: "We’re backing the Astros in this spot. He showed promise in the shortened 2020 season, throwing for an ERA of 2.59, and I think he'll return closer to that form this year.

Risk it for the biscuit: Siri's big gamble pays off (MLB.com)

PHOENIX -- Jose Siri isn't afraid to take chances. He took two big ones during the Astros' 2-1 victory over the D-backs at Chase Field on Tuesday night ...

And Brantley came away from the night impressed with not only Siri’s abilities in the batter’s box, but the high-level energy he brings to the team. “He pushes the envelope day in and day out, we all know that.” “That’s the way he plays. Even if Siri hadn’t been having the best night on the basepaths up to that point, he had made a huge offensive impact already. He came through, connecting on a 2-2 knucklecurve from right-hander Mark Melancon and dumping the ball over the head of second baseman Ketel Marte into right-center field. Let’s start with the unsuccessful risk, which came when the game was tied at 1 in the seventh inning.

D-Backs walk off Astros 3-2 in 10 innings (The Crawfish Boxes)

With an erratic Framber Valdez and a sleepy offense, Houston split the series against Arizona.

The Astros figured it out to keep things close despite the pitching disaster, but they couldn’t hit. Framber Valdez struggled all day with control and had his shortest start since July 11, 2019. On a game that went wrong in many aspects for the Astros on Wednesday afternoon, they lost it 3-2 to the Arizona Diamondbacks. A sac fly by Ketel Marté walked them off the field in the bottom of the 10th inning to split the two-game series in the desert.

Houston Astros: Ryan Pressly's velocity still slow to return to normal ... (Houston Chronicle)

PHOENIX — Last month, Ryan Pressly attributed a decline in velocity to a lack of adrenaline. He averaged 92.4 mph in his only Grapefruit League outing, ...

He averaged 92 mph on the pitch during his save on opening day. Logic suggests the Astros would not have committed two more years and $30 million to Pressly if they knew of any health concerns. In all, Pressly is averaging 92.6 mph on his four-seam fastball. On Tuesday, he threw five of them and had the same average. On Wednesday, Beer snuck a belt-high slider through a drawn-in infield to score the tying run. PHOENIX — Last month, Ryan Pressly attributed a decline in velocity to a lack of adrenaline.

And although Houston tallied only four runs in the series, Altuve isn’t concerned. Altuve nearly homered with runners on second and third and no outs in the 10th, sending a 2-2 fastball from righty Noé Ramirez deep over Arizona’s bullpen. Valdez limited damage a day after Luis Garcia threw four scoreless innings in his first start of the season. “The good thing for them and us is that these are confidence builders. Through the first six games, Houston pitchers lead MLB with a 1.69 ERA, having allowed only 10 earned runs in 53 1/3 innings. “We have won four out of six, I think that’s a good start for us,” Houston second baseman Jose Altuve said.

Ketel Marte sacrifice fly in 10th boosts Diamondbacks past Astros (AZCentral.com)

It might just be the sixth game of the season but Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo says he's already "exhausted.".

The Diamondbacks (2-4) manufactured an early run in the second after Lovullo successfully challenged a call on the field that Marte was not hit by a pitch with bases loaded and two outs. Lovullo said since his team isn't able to put together a big inning it has to rely on those types of contributions and was ready with a boxing analogy — one of several he had in the short post-game press conference. But it was a good win. Hummel was the player making the most of his at-bats, reaching base five times with four walks and a single. That run meant Merrill Kelly came up empty in the win column again despite his second stellar outing of the season. "In a situation like that the biggest thing I need to do is try to hit a ball hard," Beer said. "If it leaves the yard, that's great obviously, but in that situation if you try to muscle up a guy like reliever (Ryan) Pressly that's when you get in trouble. The first three starters we faced this year were some of the best in the big leagues," Hummel said of the offensive issues. That's what he's good at and he knows what he's good at. "The Astros every year have good pitching so tip your cap to them. Part of that could have been the four losses in the first six games. Some of what has troubled Arizona in the still-young season surfaced yet again.
