Kyle Farmer singled to lead off a would-be rally in the Bottom of the 8th, but was doubled off 1B on a flyout to LF because he’d taken off to try to steal on the pitch. - Tyler Mahle wasn’t quite as sparkly as he was on the actual Opening Day of the season, but his defense didn’t exactly help him out. Steven Kwan, who has never been retired in the history of ever, reached to load the bags ahead of José Ramirez, who parked a grand slam into the RF seats to further salt these wounds of ours. Naquin, of course, has been pretty much a platoon-bat only since joining the Reds, but since Tommy Pham had previously exited after his collision with Nick Senzel in CF, Aristides Aquino - normally the other-half of the Naquin platoon - was already in the game. Jonathan India then followed with a 2-run double that chased the Cleveland ace, with lefty Anthony Gose brought on to face Tyler Naquin in a big spot. Shane Bieber held a no-hitter as the scoreboard reached the Bottom of the 6th, and that all came on a day when the COO of the Cincinnati Reds twice taunted fans with the idea that they’d just pack up shop and move the team if we didn’t fall in line.

And that ignores that the Reds have a lease with Hamilton County through 2037. If you want to look at what would you do with this team to have it be more profitable, make more money, compete more in the current economic system that this game exists – it would be to pick it up and move it somewhere else. But then you talk about how to do that you need to move the team somewhere else because the current economic system is set up against you, and if you sold someone else could take the team to another city? It certainly seems that other teams have figured it out, Phil. And yeah, the Padres also lost a bunch of money due to the covid year, too – 50% more than the Reds did according to the numbers sourced by Forbes. Thanks to Major League Baseball’s Anti-Trust exemption another team can’t just open up shop in Cincinnati. If you want to actually go to a game in person in Cincinnati, you’re out of luck and stuck with the Reds. Of course where else can the fans go has an endless amount of answers. As for the threat of be careful what you ask for because someone else might buy the team and move it….. In the last 50 years one team in Major League Baseball has been relocated – the Montreal Expos. That’s it. come on, stop it with this boogeyman that every professional sports franchise tries to lay on the fans. There are plenty of people out there who want to own a professional sports team. And you have people saying faith is earned, 15 years of ownership and they haven’t won to the extent we like and so you had my faith, but you’ve lost it. But you know, the bottom line is, and I do think we’ve had to shift the discipline. That’s the other thing – you want to have this debate?

Cincinnati Reds President Phil Castellini Mocks Fans With Upsetting ... (Sportscasting)

Cincinnati Reds fans are upset with their team's front office. Here's how president Phil Castellini just made things even worse.

… If you want to have this debate, if you wanna look at what would you do with this team to have it be more profitable, make more money, compete more in the current economic system that this game exists, it would be to pick it up and move it somewhere else. The Cleveland Guardians are in a similar market. In fact, whenever the team has a modicum of success, the front office sends its best players packing. Bob Castellini officially became the owner of the iconic Cincinnati Reds franchise in 2006. They apparently know what they’re doing, even when they get rid of all their good players following a 2021 campaign in which Cincy just barely missed the playoffs. The Cincinnati Reds have been a joke of an MLB franchise for more than 20 years.

9th inning bullpen collapse caps a bad day for the Cincinnati Reds ... (redlegnation.com)

Tyler Naquin had a big day at the plate for the Cincinnati Reds, but the bullpen imploded in the 9th inning as they fell to Cleveland 10-5.

Tony Santillan came out for the top of the 8th inning and he made quick work of the Cleveland lineup, needing just 11 pitches to get through a 1-2-3 inning. Tommy Pham exited the game shortly after a collision with Nick Senzel in the outfield. Kyle Farmer led off the 8th inning with a single, but he was doubled up on a fly ball by Jake Fraley when he attempted to steal the bag and didn’t pick up the fly out until it was too late and the throw back to first base beat him by five feet. Still, that gave Cleveland a 4-0 lead at a point when the Reds hadn’t gotten a single hit on the day. But then a day that began with a public relations nightmare by Phil Castellini ended as the bullpen imploded on itself in the 9th, giving up two home runs and six runs total and the answer to Phil’s question of “where you gonna go?” was to the exits before the game was even over. Bieber hit Kyle Farmer with one out before serving up back-to-back doubles to Jake Fraley and Jonathan India, with the latter bringing in two runs to cut the Cleveland lead in half.

Reds president Phil Castellini's attitude of "we're here, you're lucky and show some respect" shows a problem at Pretty Good American Ball Park.

And since when is a team’s ownership revered for keeping the team in a town that has supported them to the ends of the earth? It could also be easy for a few of the 11 relievers to get less work than an eight-track tape. The Reds have an 11-man bullpen, so it could be confusing to pick the right guy night after night. It’d be wise for Phil Castellini to give that some thought and to recall it every so often. The Reds youth will be interesting if not always capable. At 9:05 p.m., the Reds did send a press release with the following apology from Phil Castellini: "I apologize to Reds fans and regret the comments that I made earlier today. "He’s going to pitch in close games." "What would you do with this team to have it more profitable, make more money, compete more in the current economic system? "Hunter’s going to be one of our guys," Bell allowed. The problem isn’t the facts. Phil Castellini asked on the radio before the Cincinnati Reds home opener Tuesday. He was responding to a question about restless fans who have suggested that Phil’s father sell the team. Opening day shouldn’t be a referendum on town-team relations, but Phil Castellini opened the can.

Still, he and Senzel are out of the lineup today. 0 0 The 24-year-old starter misses a lot of bats, but he also walks hitters at a high rate for a starting pitcher. We don’t have pitch data breakdown for Nick Lodolo because that information isn’t publicly available in the minor leagues at this point in time. 0 He doesn’t walk hardly anyone – or at least hasn’t in the past. The left-handed pitcher will be making his big league debut after a spring training in which he threw 11.1 innings with two walks and 12 strikeouts and allowed just three runs.

Cincinnati Reds blown out after comeback in home-opening loss to ... (Cincinnati.com)

The Reds erased a four-run deficit in the sixth inning of their home opener, but Cleveland ran away with it with a six-run ninth inning.

After the Guardians replaced Bieber with left-hander Anthony Gose, Tyler Naquin hammered a two-run homer to the batter’s eye in center field. After a sacrifice fly for the game's first run, Ramírez lofted a ball into the left-center gap. With two runners in scoring position, India hit a two-run double down the third-base line, waving his arms to the crowd as he stood atop second base. The next hitter bounced a comebacker to the mound, a potential double-play ball, but Mahle was unable to corral it and it turned into an error when everyone was safe. Bell said it felt like a normal Cincinnati Opening Day to him with all the fans wearing red he saw on his drive to the ballpark. Six ninth-inning runs later and it was a blowout. The crowd went wild when Joe Burrow stepped onto the field before the ceremonial first pitch and broke into a “Who Dey” chant after he lobbed the pitch to Bengals head coach Zac Taylor. "Over the course of a long year, as tough as it is to take a loss there, we just need to keep playing like that, and don't give up," Reds Manager David Bell said. The GABP crowd of 43,036 was ready to party all afternoon. Giménez crushed a go-ahead, two-run homer to center field off reliever Hunter Strickland with one out in the top of the ninth inning. Reds president Phil Castellini went viral for his radio comments when he responded to a question about fans unhappy with ownership, “Well, where are you going to go?" Reds ownership to fans: Love means having to say you're sorry ... (The Columbus Dispatch)

The Cleveland Guardians are way cheaper with payroll than the Cincinnati Reds. Why is the perception otherwise? Because the Reds have Phil Castellini.

Given the average age of a baseball fan (57), that's where the game is headed. That’s the other thing: You want to have this debate? “That’s a lot of respect,” Castellanos told NBC Sports Philadelphia. “At the end of the day, baseball comes down to ownership. In Cincinnati, the NFL team is referred to as “Who Dey?” and Joe Burrow is a nice fellow like, say, Oscar Robertson is a nice fellow. … What would you do with this team to have it more profitable, make more money, compete more in the current economic system that (exists in) this game? The Reds are the oldest team in major-league sports (depending on how you measure), they have a regional following that goes back generations and Cincinnati is the metropolitan epicenter. Castellanos, who hit .309 with 34 home runs and 100 RBIs last year, signed with the Philadelphia Phillies, who went over a luxury-tax threshold to get him. So Philadelphia should be pumped that that guy is behind the Phillies.” The Guardians signed All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez to a five-year contract extension. Then came Tuesday, when Phil Castellini was asked, by 700-WLW radio, why the fans should have faith in the process. The Cincinnati Reds’ 26-man payroll on opening day was, according to Cot’s Baseball Contracts, $113.7 million. But if he’s better than Baker Mayfield, then everything will be OK because the Haslams did a thorough investigation.
