Breaking Down the HPAI Outbreak (Farm Bureau News)

Highly pathogenic avian influenza was first detected in wild birds in South Carolina on Jan. 13 of this year. Poultry growers, remembering well the ...

Thus far, a little more than 2.1 million birds have been depopulated, which represents a little more than 0.02% of the number of broilers raised in 2020. South Dakota (Central flyway), which raised 4.5 million turkeys, or 2% of the nation’s total production, in 2020 has had to depopulate 1.288 million turkeys – nearly 30% of the number of turkeys raised in the state in 2020. Minnesota, which raised 40 million head of turkeys in 2020 has had to depopulate more than 1 million turkeys, about 3% of what the state raised in 2020. Also, hard hit in the Mississippi flyway is Wisconsin, which has had to depopulate more than 2.7 million hens, over 35% of the average number of laying hens in the state in 2021. The Mississippi flyway was home to more than 50% of commercial production of turkeys, broilers and layer hens and more than 40% of broilers in the last year. In the Atlantic flyway, Maryland has been forced to depopulate more than 1.16 million hens, nearly 50% of the average number of laying hens in the state in 2021. Iowa, which had an average of 48.87 million layers in 2021, has had to depopulate more than 12.75 million layers, over a quarter of the total number of laying hens in the state. Thirty-six detections of HPAI in commercial layer and pullet operations led to the euthanasian of more than 25 million egg-laying hens and 5 million pullets. Eighty-eight percent of the detections were in the Mississippi flyway. Growers in the Atlantic flyway were responsible for 40% of broiler production and more than 20% of turkey, layer and pullet production each. This gives the impression that the 2022 outbreak may have a larger impact than the 2014-2015 outbreak, but nearly 40% of detections in 2022 have been in backyard flocks. It is likely that at least some, and perhaps a significant portion, of the higher number of detections in the current outbreak are a result of increased sampling through the surveillance program.

Boris Johnson to be fined over lockdown-breaking parties at UK ... (CNN)

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his finance minister Rishi Sunak have been told they will be fined by police over lockdown-breaking parties held on UK ...

"Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak have broken the law and repeatedly lied to the British public. According to ministerial rules, if a government minister breaches the ministerial code, it is expected that they should resign from their job. The Prime Minister initially rebuffed allegations of illegal gatherings by saying there were no parties. Revelations that the Prime Minister attended several parties had already prompted furious calls for him to resign even before Tuesday's announcement of a police fine. The police fines are confirmation that Johnson and Sunak broke Covid-19 laws created by their own government -- even though the Prime Minister previously denied some parties were held and insisted all guidance was followed. Revelations of the parties sparked national outrage.

Boris Johnson to be fined by U.K. police over Covid lockdown parties (NBC News)

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will receive a police fine for breaching his own Covid-19 lockdown rules, Johnson's office said Tuesday.

It is unclear which event Johnson and Sunak will receive fines for attending, although Johnson apologized in January for attending a "bring your own booze" party at Downing Street in May 2020, when gatherings were illegal. Some people have been fined several thousand pounds and appeared in court for organizing or attending parties while the government's severe restrictions were in place. Johnson will be spared the wrath of Parliament for the time being, however.

Johnson and Sunak "have today received notification that the Metropolitan Police intend to issue them with fixed penalty notices," a spokesperson at Downing Street said in a statement. "Our joint focus remains on supporting President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people in their fight for freedom," Johnson said. The police fines for Johnson and Sunak come as U.K. lawmakers observe a parliamentary recess for the Easter break. Not a single serving Cabinet minister has voiced their support for Johnson since it was confirmed he had received a fixed penalty notice. Sunak, too, has come under pressure in recent weeks. People are angry and upset.

Boris Johnson offers 'full apology' for breaking Covid rules and says ... (The Guardian)

Labour's deputy leader Angela Rayner has questioned why the Chancellor has not yet spoken about receiving a fixed penalty notice. Both the Prime Minister and ...

Johnson is reminded by the interviewer that the problem he faces is a lack of trust in him. Or amongst the very first to know. The PM has apologised and accepted the police’s decision today. Their efforts during the pandemic have ensured the UK is now free of restrictions and avoided economic catastrophe. He says it didn’t occur to him that he had broken the rules. That is my priority. I now humbly accept that I was. The PM and chancellor have my full support. He has accepted Sue Gray’s recommendations in full and instituted a comprehensive programme of reform in No 10. This is taking people for fools. He has no point at all. You broke those laws intended to keep us safe.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson & Chancellor Rishi Sunak To Be ... (Deadline)

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Johnson's wife Carrie are facing fines for breaking lockdown rules.

Since reports of parties being held in the government offices during strict Covid lockdowns emerged late last year, Johnson insisted that “guidelines were followed at all times” but soon changed his tune as more events came into light and he faced continued questions about his involvement. The London Metropolitan Police has said that more than 50 government ministers and officials are expected to be fined as a result of the investigation into lockdown breaches. While many of those Conservative MPs have changed their tack since Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine in late February, opposing parties continue to question Johnson and Sunak’s leadership abilities. And he should take his out of touch chancellor with him.” Recently, it was also revealed that Sunak retained his U.S. Green Card status for a number of months after he became the UK Chancellor. Holders of green cards, of course, have to declare the U.S. as their permanent residence as well as pay U.S. tax on their income. Both Johnson and his wife as well as Sunak were said to have attended a number of these parties and the three of them were reported to be at the same gathering for the PM’s birthday in June 2020.

She said “failures of leadership and judgment” in Johnson’s government allowed events to occur that should not have happened. Police say they have sent questionnaires to more than 100 people, including the prime minister, and interviewed witnesses as part of the investigation. Johnson’s government has been shaken by public anger over revelations that his staff held “bring your own booze” office parties, birthday celebrations and “wine time Fridays” in 2020 and 2021 while millions in Britain were barred from meeting with friends and family because of his government’s COVID-19 restrictions.

Covid-19 Live Updates: Global Cases, Mask Mandates and More ... (The New York Times)

It says that a lockdown in the city of 25 million people “severely impacts travel and access to public services.” In Britain, Prime Minister Boris Johnson ...

The county, a Republican bastion in a state controlled by Democrats, is home to some of New Jersey’s most exclusive waterfront communities and its fastest-growing town, Lakewood. It has recorded 459 virus-related deaths for every 100,000 residents, state data show. As the United States begins to chart a path through a third year of the pandemic, Ocean County, a largely suburban coastal region in central New Jersey, illustrates a stubborn public health challenge. Explanations for the high number of deaths in Ocean County vary. But the European Central Bank has set in motion a plan to end its massive bond-buying program to pave the way for interest rate increases, because “inflation was becoming more broad-based and more persistent,” according to the account of its most recent policy meeting. “And I think the C.D.C. policy is right on this.” In the eurozone, the annual inflation rate jumped to 7.5 percent in March, up from 5.9 percent the previous month. The war sparked fears about the stability of energy supplies from Russia, which are crucial to Europe, and disrupted food production, raising the risk of a global hunger crisis. Mr. Xue, through a Kafka-esque streak of bad luck and run-ins with China’s unbending virus rules, would spend the next three months in quarantine, bouncing between hospitals and hotel rooms. To visit his parents in eastern Shandong Province in January, for the first time since the pandemic began, Mr. Xue, 37, had already shelled out $7,600 for airfare. Mr. Adams said in a recent interview that his mayoralty will be judged on public safety, which he was working to improve. In February, Mr. Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a new subway safety plan to encourage riders to return. Mr. Adams, 61, announced on Sunday that he had tested positive for the virus on his 100th day in office.

PM, chancellor and Carrie Johnson to receive fixed-penalty notices for attending illegal gathering.

About 20-30 MPs were at one point thought to have submitted letters of no confidence in the prime minister, with 54 needed to trigger a leadership challenge. A No 10 spokesperson said: “The prime minister and chancellor of the Exchequer have today received notification that the Metropolitan police intend to issue them with fixed penalty notices. They are believed to be the first prime minister and chancellor to have broken the law while in office. The basic values of integrity and decency - essential to the proper working of any parliamentary democracy - demand that he go. Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish first minister and SNP leader, also called for the prime minister to quit. The Labour leader, Keir Starmer, called on Johnson and Sunak to resign.

BREAKING: No charges for officer in fatal December shooting ... (Austin Herald)

Austin Police Officer Zachary Gast will not be facing charges in the fatal December 2021 shooting of Kokou Christopher Fiafonou at Kwik Trip on Oakland ...

“Officer Gast reasonably believed that the use of deadly force was necessary to protect himself and several members of the community from death or great bodily harm.” Officers followed Fiafonou to the Kwik Trip and tried to distract him in an attempt to lure him away. Because the evidence in this case conclusively establishes that Officer Gast’s use of deadly force was reasonable, our office chooses to decline prosecution in this matter.”
