I look forward to celebrating and enjoying with all of you, our fans, and Marylanders what Camden Yards and the Orioles mean to so many this season, and another 30 seasons. All the while, we continue to lead the league in fan and family-friendly pricing, atmosphere, and customer service and satisfaction for those making the baseball pilgrimage to Camden Yards. The Orioles were the winningest team in the American League from 2012-2016, a remarkable achievement under baseball’s unique system that challenges teams from small and middle markets in ways that no other sports league does.

BALTIMORE – The Milwaukee Brewers made their first appearance at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in nearly 19 years on Monday afternoon. Their bats?

That ineptitude, combined with shaky starting pitching, has left the Brewers a surprising 1-3 against two non-contenders to start a season in which they're expected to be major power in the National League. Milwaukee managed just six hits and went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position and is 2 for 22 in that department after opening the day in the bottom third of the major leagues. Facing one of the worst pitching staffs in the major leagues the Brewers turned in another punchless performance at the plate in being shut out by the Baltimore Orioles, 2-0.

Akin made 17 starts over 24 appearances and 95 IP for the Orioles in 2021, with a 6.63 ERA and 5.10 FIP. The third starter for the weekend is also up in the air. Last season, he made 26 starts in 28 appearances for the Brewers, posting a 3.22 ERA and 4.33 FIP over 142.1 IP. Houser’s 6.45 K/9 and 4.06 BB/9 put him fifth in the Brewers rotation in 2021, but he’s also stayed out of trouble. In addition to the above options, the Orioles could choose to use their first starter again. The reigning Cy Young winner will look to get back to form in this start. While some of the Brewers outfielders do have experience playing in Baltimore, this will be a new one for everyone. Mancini has batted third and fourth this season so far, and had a .255/.326/.432 line with 21 HR and 71 RBI in 2021. The Orioles do have a couple of former Brewers on the team. One thing to watch in this series will be the changes to Camden Yards. The Orioles home park has long been known as a hitters park, but the Orioles made some changes last offseason. (Brandon Woodruff was with the Brewers in 2017, but did not debut until August of that season.) Lifetime, these two teams have plenty of meetings, with the Orioles leading the all-time series 169-229. Looking back, here were the pitchers of record the last time these two teams met in Baltimore:

Bruce Zimmermann gets the start for the Birds. He was 4-5 with a 5.04 ERA last season, and struggled in the spring to the tune of a 7.88 ERA in three starts. But he was great last spring and the regular season went the way it did, so who knows. Adrian Houser, the Brewers starter, went 10-6 with a 3.22 ERA a season ago, and had a 3.00 ERA across three starts this spring. After getting swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in the dome to start the season, Baltimore returns to its reconfigured ballpark to welcome the Milwaukee Brewers, who are coming off of a scuffling start of their own after dropping two of three to the Cubs, Brewers lineup After opening against a team that won 100 games last year, the Orioles now get to try their luck against a team that won 95.

Orioles Select Spenser Watkins (MLB Trade Rumors)

The Orioles added right-hander Spenser Watkins back to the 40-man roster and recalled righty Alexander Wells. Read more at MLB Trade Rumors.

Watkins has a 3.86 ERA in 625 1/3 innings at the minor league level, and he’ll now aim to carry some of that success over in his second go-around in the Majors. Wells has punched out just 19.6% of his minor league opponents in his career, but he also boasts an outstanding 3.9% walk rate. Opponents jumped on him for 49 runs in just 54 2/3 innings — an 8.07 ERA. Watkins started off his big league career with just three runs through his first 16 1/3 innings, and he closed out the 2021 season with a more solid stretch of three runs allowed in his final 7 2/3 frames. Watkins had solid numbers in eight Triple-A games (six starts), pitching to a 3.53 ERA with a 20.4% strikeout rate and a 7.5% walk rate in that time. As for the 25-year-old Wells, he signed with the O’s as an international free agent out of Australia back in 2015. Outfielder DJ Stewart was optioned to Norfolk last night, so Watkins and Wells will fill the vacancies created by that move and by Kremer’s placement on the IL. Baltimore’s 40-man roster had previously been at 39 players, but it’s now full following Watkins’ selection.

Glenn Clark: Sorting Out What's Fair, Unfair In Your Orioles-Related ... (Press Box)

Glenn Clark sorts through some of the criticism being thrown around about the Orioles and breaks down what's fair and what's not.

Another version of the take suggests an amount of heroism for the Orioles in giving Harvey a chance when he believed his honest testimony might lead to being blackballed. There’s nothing about Harvey the baseball player that suggests he is worthy of even another minor league deal (after what will likely be a 60-day suspension). He is an objectively bad baseball player and has been for four years now. The strongest version of this take paints Harvey as a murderer. It comes from A) someone who isn’t paying that much attention but knows the team is bad and wants attention, or B) someone who is paying very close attention but has no interest in a nuanced discussion and would rather hold up the Orioles a singular reflection of the sport’s woes. The Orioles aren’t likely to have a top-10 payroll any time soon. I know that talking about Orioles first-round picks is a bit more awkward because Heston Kjerstad remains a 1965 Bob Dylan song-level “complete unknown,” but there’s no fair criticism to be had there, either. Matt Harvey is a tremendously flawed human being, but there is no reason to believe he ever intended to contribute to former teammate Tyler Skaggs’ death. But that doesn’t change the fact that they didn’t spend the money. It is a tangible celebration of the arrival of spring, yes. In the season when we finally saw MLB teams choose to call up their top prospects, we have no shiny new toy to play with just yet. But it is also an intangible celebration of the mere concept of hope. It’s the most hyperbolic of all Orioles takes.

In the top of the third he opened with two quick outs, but ran into a jam again when Andrew McCutchen doubled to left and Willy Adames and Christian Yelich drew bases-loading walks. He followed the Taylor double by striking out Kolten Wong on a down-and-away slider, pumping his fist at his ability to keep the score tied at zero. So it was up to the pitchers to hang on and get the job done, and in a twist to the typical Oriole story, they succeeded. Baltimore had runners at the corners with one out in the fifth, but Urias grounded into a double play. Mullins showing what made him a top-10 MVP vote-getter last year after a tough start, Mateo showing off the wheels, and the Oriole faithful getting up for a moment like it was September and the division was at stake. Brewers starter Adrian Houser fell behind Mullins as well, and the Silver Slugger winner made him pay by lining a single to center to score both Urias and Mateo for a 2-0 lead, prompting a celebratory reaction from an amped-up Mateo and raising the decibel level with the Opening Day crowd.

Orioles-Brewers series preview: The Brew Crew rolls into Baltimore (Camden Chat)

The Orioles will face an infrequent foe — the Brewers — for their 2022 home opening series.

The Brew Crew will send 29-year-old right-hander Adrian Houser to the mound against Zimmermann. Houser won 10 games last year with a 3.22 ERA, 4.33 FIP, and 1.28 WHIP in 142.1 innings. The Orioles have their work cut out for them in this game. The Brewers got strong contributions from lefty Eric Lauer last year (3.19 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 8.9 SO/9 in 118.2 IP), and they’ll look for that to continue into this season. He allowed four hits, three runs, and three walks in five innings, while getting his pitch count up to 83. Milwaukee’s bullpen is led by shutdown closer Josh Hader, who’s from Millersville, MD and was a 19th round draft pick of the O’s in 2012. Last year, Zimmermann threw 64.1 innings for the Orioles, including 13 starts and one relief appearance. And Baltimore’s offense has yet to awaken from their winter slumber, having been outscored 4-15 in the Rays series. Milwaukee was outscored 9-18 in three games against Chicago. But he was recently suspended 80 games for a failed drug test. A former 1st round draft pick of the Padres in 2016, the 26-year-old Lauer joined Milwaukee in the winter of 2019 as part of a trade for pitcher Zach Davies and outfielder Trent Grisham. Hader has never pitched at Camden Yards or faced the Orioles in his career, so this series could include a couple of firsts for the successful southpaw. It’s been quite a while since the O’s faced the Brewers. In fact, the last time was all the way back in 2017 when the Brew Crew took two of three games from the Birds in Milwaukee. Trey Mancini was 5-for-12 in that series by the way.

Orioles get into the win column for the first time in 2022 (Camden Chat)

The pitching impressed, the left field wall looked fine, and Camden Yards is getting a publicly-funded makeover.

The catcher had a 101 OPS+ with the Birds during his time, He is currently in the Braves organization on a minor league deal. The righty was a key piece in the Orioles bullpen from 2014 through 2018, compiling a 2.99 ERA over 299 total appearances. 2016 - The Orioles extend their run as the lone unbeaten team in baseball. Roch touches on the pitching set-up and how it will change. Across four games, the Orioles offense has scored a total of six runs. Just about every soft-tossing lefty gets slapped with the “pitchability” label, but it is on full display with Zimmermann. His change-up was nasty on Monday, and he was locating just about everything. Did you know Zimmermann was from the Baltimore area? And I personally love the idea of Jorgé López closing, if that is truly the plan. Advanced metrics suggest he has been a tad unlucky and is still hitting the ball rather hard. It was the type of win that has been rare around these parts for a few years. Cionel Pérez is a weapon from the left side.

Things couldn't have gone much better for the O's 27-year-old, Baltimore-bred starting pitcher.

Given an abbreviated spring training stemming from labor negotiations between Major League Baseball owners and players that delayed the start of preseason and Opening Day, Zimmermann’s pitch count on Monday was predetermined to be 70. Two-thirds of his pitches were strikes, a very good sign of things to come. “Internally, there was a lot going on,” he said. I was one of the rare few to attend the last two home openers. Same at the end of the third, when he got out of a bases-loaded jam following a brief mound visit from pitching coach Chris Holt. It was for those of us in the crowd, too. It was another start, with a lot of added adrenaline. The first time seeing Oriole Park like that, as a player, was incredibly special.” And, of course, his eyes drifted to the iconic brick warehouse in right field, gently lit in the black sky. He started 13 games last year after being called up late in 2020, but had never started Opening Day in his hometown ballpark. On a warm spring afternoon, the 6-foot-1, 220-pound leftie buttoned-up his No. 50 Orioles jersey and threw four scoreless innings. The new deeper, and higher left field wall, reconstructed in the offseason, to help pitchers just like him.

Three takeaways from Brewers' loss to Orioles on Monday (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)

Milwaukee is 2 for 22 with runners in scoring position this season after going 0 for 6 Monday against the Orioles in Baltimore.

"I thought he battled through it pretty good, thought we made some nice defensive plays to get him out of a couple (jams). Tyrone (Taylor) made two incredible plays. That's a big part for me, especially, being able to work ahead, get that first-pitch strike and expanding from there. "I wasn't able to establish the zone early, get ahead in the count and I just fell apart from there. It's something I need to hammer down over these next few days and get going for the next start. "No," he said. "You don't want to be in that spot, where you're working from behind. He totaled only three in his 3⅔ innings. "I feel fine," he said. "It wasn't a day where we were unlucky; we didn't hit balls hard and have them caught. So far this season – through four games, as he reminded everyone – Renfroe is hitting .071 (1 for 14) with five strikeouts. "We didn't get much going early at all. I think we had a man at third once.
