She made her professional debut in Switzerland, before performing in Germany. Despite being born and raised in Spain, the singer did not make her debut in her homeland. In 1965 she made her debut in the US at Carnegie Hall in New York City. She continued performing until she was 80, when health problems forced her to retire from the stage. She was said to have "a personality that was larger-than-life" but her music is the legacy she left behind. The Spanish operatic soprano was known as Montserrat Caballé and her nickname La Superba.

Today's Google Doodle is a tribute to Montserrat Caballé, an opera singer perhaps most popularly known for her duet with Freddie Mercury.

In keeping with this being a Google homepage logo, the company’s name is written out, with Caballé’s powerful pose forming the middle “oog” of “Google.” Montserrat Caballé died on October 6, 2018, in her hometown of Barcelona. In the Google Doodle devoted to Montserrat Caballé, we see the singer in a distinctly floral outfit, covered in roses.

Google is celebrating opera singer Montserrat Caballé on what would have been her 89th birthday, with a new Doodle.

She made her U.S. debut in 1965 at Carnegie Hall and eventually became an international opera star. Caballé went on to give more than 3,800 performances in over 80 roles on five continents. Caballé was born on this day in 1933 in Barcelona, Spain. Caballé spent much of her childhood studying music and training her voice.

Later that year, she made her debut at New York’s popular Metropolitan Opera as Marguerite in Gounod’s Faust. - In the late 1950s, she debuted in Vienna, Austria with her performance of Salome, her “very favorite” role.

Aside from the numerous awards, at the age of 82, the singer was given a six-month suspended prison sentence for tax fraud.

Apart from the suspended prison sentence, the singer was also ordered to pay a fine of €254,231 ($280,000) and was banned from receiving any public subsidies for a period of 18 months. The sentence was the result of an agreement with prosecutors that avoided the need for a trial. At the age of 82, the singer was given a six-month suspended prison sentence for tax fraud. Apart from being a singer professionally, Caballe was also a philanthropist. During the span of her career, this Spanish opera singer received five Grammy nominations and won her first Grammy in 1968 for Best Classical Vocal Performance. However, despite being born in Spain she did not make her debut in her home country. In a career spanning 50 years, Caballe had stints with the Basel Opera and Bremen Opera before her international breakthrough at Carnegie Hall in New York. She went on to perform with the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera and Vienna State Opera, appearing opposite the likes of Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo.

Revered Spanish soprano Montserrat Caballe, one of the greats of 20th-century opera, is being remembered on what would have been her 89th birthday.

She won the Grammy award for Best Classical Vocal Performance in 1968. She made her American debut in Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia at Carnegie Hall in New York City on 20 April 1965, replacing the pregnant Marilyn Horne and earning a 25-minute standing ovation. After his death, she always wore a red ribbon on her lapel to promote Aids research. “When Caballe began her first aria, there was a perceptible change in the atmosphere,” critic John Gruen wrote of the performance in The New York Herald Tribune. A Newsweek review of her performance that same year in another Donizetti opera, Roberto Devereux, noted: “Her fiery temperament so dominated the stage that the other able singers seemed made of papier-mache.”
