Entering today at one-over par for the weekend, Rory McIlroy seemed unlikely to factor into the final result at the Masters.
So much talk this week about how it might be “too late” for him to win for the career grand slam because he can’t be “selfish” enough at this point in his life. It’s unlikely that McIlroy can make up that gap, unless Scheffler implodes, and Cameron Smith (-7) is sandwiched between the two of them as well. That was before the 32-year-old went out and set the course ablaze.
Cameron Smith drains a birdie putt at the first to move to -7, while Scheffler does really well to make a par and stay at -9. Share.
Rory McIlroy has won four major golf championships in his exceptional career, but has he ever taken the top prize at The Masters?
He tied for eighth in 2014, tied for 10th in 2016, tied for seventh in 2017, tied for fifth in 2018 and tied for fifth in 2020. In 2011, he dominated the first three days of the tournament. A win in the 2022 Masters would be a first for McIlroy. It’s the only major the 32-year-old has yet to win despite joining only Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only golfers with four major championships before the age of 25.
Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa holed-out from same bunker on 18 for an incredible Masters moment at Augusta National Golf Club.
The sand-save earned McIlroy the week’s first bogey-free round as he shot up the leaderboard on the final day to post a 8-under 64 and put up a number at 7 under for the tournament, just three shots behind 54-hole leader Scottie Scheffler at the time. Both players found the back-right bunker behind Augusta National Golf Club’s final hole and both proceeded to hole-out on consecutive shots, sending the patrons into an absolute frenzy of cheers and chants of “Rory! Rory!” and “Collin! Collin!” This year at the 86th playing of the first men’s major of the year, it seemed like Tiger Woods’ return to competitive golf would take the crown.
Rory McIlroy, still stalking his first green jacket, had the Masters patrons roaring with a Sunday 64 capped by a holeout from the bunker at the 18th hole.
This week was the 32-year-old's eighth attempt to finish the career grand slam. "I've never heard roars like that at the 18th." To play as well as I did today, and to finish like this, it's absolutely incredible," McIlroy said after the round on the CBS broadcast.

Rory McIlroy finished his remarkable final round at the 2022 Masters in style – now he waits to see if his charge was enough.
It is one off the course record of 63 held by Nick Price (1934) and Greg Norman (1996). His bogey-free round included six birdies and an eagle. McIlroy, 32, chipped a bunker shot near the middle of the green at par-4 18 and saw it take a long and perfect left turn into the cup for a round-sealing birdie at Augusta on Sunday.
Rory McIlroy shot an eight under par 64 during the final round of the 2022 Masters, finding himself in second place as he headed into the clubhouse.
This led to McIlroy shooting one over par for the second consecutive day to open the tourney. Remember, it was back on Friday that those who took part in the Masters dealt with some major weather conditions. This included an awe-inspiring Eagle on the par five 13.
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Rory McIlroy has had some dramatic moments at Augusta National. Nothing was quite as epic as his 18th hole and the celebration that ensued.
The 18th hole delivers iconic moments year after year. But as great players do, he manufactured an all-time great shot from the right greenside bunker, his ball rolling into the hole to cap a 64. Delivering a big charge on Sunday, he stalled out after getting it to seven under for the round through 13 holes after an eagle at 13.
Rory McIlroy's struggles at Augusta National have been well documented, but on Sunday at the Masters, he put that narrative to rest.
McIlroy’s spectacular Sunday vaulted him up the leaderboard and put him alone in second place. The 32-year-old carded six birdies, an eagle and zero bogeys on the day. And although he’s won four majors in the years since his first heartbreak, the green jacket has eluded him.
Rory McIlroy entered Sunday's action at the Masters 1 over par for the tournament. He was 10 strokes back of leader Scottie Scheffler when he teed off, ...
The Masters course record for a single round is 63. His 20-under par mark broke the tournament record of 18-under par that had previously been held by Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth. He overcame a seven-stroke deficit by shooting 8-under par to win the tournament in 1978. A decade later, Greg Norman was able to match Price with a 63 during the first round of the 1996 Masters. That gave him a two-stroke lead over Phil Mickelson at the time. That shot put McIlroy within three strokes of Scheffler and made him the clubhouse leader when he exited the course. He was 10 strokes back of leader Scottie Scheffler when he teed off, and it didn't look like he would have a realistic shot at earning his first green jacket.
