Denver Captures Its Ninth N.C.A.A. Hockey Championship (The New York Times)

The Pioneers are now tied for most Division I men's college hockey titles with Michigan, the team they beat in overtime in the national semifinal round.

Minnesota State (38-6-0) carried the balance of play, but could not cash in on numerous opportunities to add to its lead. “But he stood on his head.” But the university honored his scholarship, and George Gwozdecky, the coach at the time, made him an assistant coach while a student. Much of that was because of the work of Magnus Chrona, the team’s Swedish goaltender. For two periods, it looked as if McKay, Minnesota State’s goalie, might add to his N.C.A.A. record of 34 career shutouts. “That responsibility does not fall on me lightly,” David Carle said to explain why it meant so much to tie for most championships. But on Saturday night, in his 168th college game, at the end of his fifth college season, Barrow finally made it happen. His team had been sluggish, seemingly unable to beat Minnesota State goalie Dryden McKay, the recent winner of the Hobey Baker Award as the top player in Division I men’s hockey. “It will be pretty sweet to watch my own now.” Carle’s quest to get Denver that ninth title remained alive. He was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and he retired from playing. The Pioneers trailed by 1-0 in that game, too, but fought back to win on Carter Savoie’s overtime goal.

Denver claims Frozen Four title (Yardbarker)

The college hockey season came to a conclusion on Saturday night and a champion was crowned. The University of Denver prevailed over Minnesota State ...

The Islanders looked and played like the travel-weary team they probably were, compiling a 9-12-6 record through the end of December. They have gone 23-16-3 since the calendar flipped over to 2022 and have looked much more like the team that took the champion Tampa Bay Lightning to seven games in the Eastern Conference Final last season. The Islanders’ aging core of veterans is still a concern for me long term, but their late-season surge demonstrates that they are still too good and too well-coached to fall off the map just yet. CHRIS GEAR: I was going to say the Sabres, but Scott beat me to it, so I will stick in New York State and say the Islanders will be back to form in 2022-23. Could "the streak" come to a halt in ’23? That’s a tall order, but I’ll say they finish ahead of Ottawa, Montreal and Detroit in the Atlantic and will play meaningful games into 2023. FRANK SERAVALLI: I’m going to go with a player: Josh Norris of the Ottawa Senators. I’m not sure how much love Norris has gotten outside of Canada’s capital, but I think he’s a legitimate star in the making. In the ninth round, Murata was clipped and dazed by a right hand from Golovkin. He took a knee and his corner threw in the towel, ending the fight as a technical knockout win for Golovkin. According to CompuBox, Golovkin landed 257 of his 629 punches while Murata landed 144 of his 592. Of the four major professional North American sports leagues, the NHL is the only one where the last team standing doesn’t usually refer to itself as “World Champion.” In the NFL and NBA, winners often use that title, and in baseball, “World” is literally part of the name of the championship series. The only other hat trick of his career in Premier League play came in September 2020 when he scored four times against Southampton. Tottenham struggled through an up-and-down start to the season with five wins and five losses in its first 10 matches. Tottenham Hotspur is in control of fourth place in the Premier League table after a 4-0 win against Aston Villa that was coupled with Arsenal's upset loss to Brighton on Saturday. Son Heung-min recorded a hat trick in Tottenham's win, scoring goals in the 3rd, 66th and 71st minutes. Brink was the most productive scorer in the nation this season by a wide margin, making Denver one of the most dangerous offensive teams in college hockey. The game was the rubber match in a three-game series between the schools. The college hockey season came to a conclusion on Saturday night and a champion was crowned.

It became a 3-1 lead at 13:34 of the third, with DU capitalizing on an odd-man rush. Minnesota State outshot the Pioneers by a 9-3 margin in taking a 1-0 lead in the opening frame. Then, just as a Minnesota State penalty expired, defenseman Mike Benning wired a shot from the left dot that found the back of the net at 7:33 to give DU at 2-1 lead. The goal, the 12th of the year for Pavel, also drew an assist from Josh Groll. Then at 13:17, sophomore center David Silye ripped a shot high blocker side from the right dot to make it a 4-1 Minnesota State lead. Denver responded with five unanswered third-period goals in claiming the national title with a 5-1 win. The Mavericks bounced back in the second period, scoring twice to take a 2-1 lead into the final 20 minutes of regulation.

Why some Frozen Four stars might pack a punch for Detroit Red ... (Detroit Free Press)

A trio of Detroit Red Wings picks pushed Denver to the NCAA hockey title at the Frozen Four, plus two undrafted players who could help the Wings.

He might have put up more, but he missed a month while playing for Team USA in the Beijing Olympics. In four games there, he had two goals, two assists and a plus-1 rating. He showed some offensive skill in the first round of the tournament, with three assists in Minnesota State’s 4-3 win over Harvard. This season, Meyers won 57.4% of his faceoffs, a number dropped only by his OK 45.6% (26-for-57) performance in three NCAA tournament games. The freshman played like it this season, too, with three goals and 15 assists (10th among Pioneers) with a plus-18 rating (ninth for DU) in 39 games. For as big as Tuomisto looms on the ice, with a 6-5, 210-pound frame, the Finn didn’t dominate the scoresheet. He was the only Pioneer with multiple points, and he also had two shots and finished with a plus-2 rating. Lee then fired a shot that was deflected by Montreal draft pick Brett Stapley for the score. Benning connected on a one-timer and suddenly the Pioneers, who had trailed 1-0 for nearly 30 minutes, were up 2-1. Mazur only had one other point in the NCAA tournament, but it was a big one: He fired the puck toward the net with less than three minutes to go in a tied first-round game against UMass Lowell, and teammate Cameron Wright deflected it into the net to keep the Pioneers from being upset in front of essentially a home crowd in Loveland, Colorado — about an hour outside of Denver. (It’s also the Pios’ fourth this century — to go with wins in 2004, 2005 and 2017 — while the Wolverines haven’t won a title since 1998.) But the 2019 second-round pick (No. 35 overall) was still effective on defense, wrapping things up with a plus-19 rating, tied for seventh on the DU roster. Let’s take a look at how that trio fared, plus a pair of Frozen Four participants (who didn’t play for Michigan; we’re pretty sure you’ve heard all about them by now) who could be of interest to the Wings.

'Couldn't stop the bleeding': Minnesota State Mankato's Frozen Four ... (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

Denver delivered the dagger at 13:34, when Massimo Rizzo, on a two-on-one rush with Carter Mazur, scored to make it 3-1. … There will be time to look at this down the road. "I feel for the whole group,'' Hastings said. A dominant two periods of hockey at the NCAA men's Frozen Four had produced a 1-0 lead for Minnesota State, which had held Denver, the team with the highest national goals per game at 4.27, to eight shots on goal through 40 minutes. "Couldn't stop the bleeding,'' Mavericks coach Mike Hastings said. With Hobey Baker Award winner Dryden McKay in goal, surely the Mavericks would hold on for their first national championship as a Division I program.

The Pioneers used a late offensive surge to earn their second title in the last six years.

“It’s a spot we hadn’t been in in a while, and I don’t think we managed it very well. Benning also had two assists in the semifinal, including on the overtime winner, and was selected the Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player. Minnesota State (38-6) took a 1-0 lead on Sam Morton’s first-period goal and dominated—outshooting Denver 18-8 in the first 40 minutes. Winning Thursday against Michigan, the team at nine, was a huge step in that direction. “I came the year after they won it,” he said. I owe a lot of what I have in my life to this place.
