this quote seems to work a little too well for this situation. @TheAcademyyour decision to ban Will Smith from the Oscars ceremony is hypocritical and racist. will smith becoming the face of “they don’t love us, just what we create” was not on my 2022 bingo card. The slap was wrong so does the joke but honestly why ban him for 10 years? See I didn’t really care or have an opinion about this incident UNTIL now. I’m actually dumbfounded that the Academy decided to ban Will Smith for 10 years for a slap.

Too Much, Too Little, Too Late: Academy Members React to Will ... (Hollywood Reporter)

Sound branch member: “The Academy president and CEO were not thinking at all about the AMPAS Rules of Conduct & Behavior, but about whether ordering Will Smith to leave the ceremony would be perceived as racist. As for the ‘punishment,’ boo-hoo, Will can’t ‘get jiggy’ with AMPAS for 10 years, but he can be nominated by the standing-O crowd who condoned and applauded his inconceivably delusional and senseless behavior because, five minutes prior to that moment, he was a movie star.” I’m campaigning for Guillermo del Toro to take over the reins of the Academy — a filmmaker and leader with heart, brains and the courage of his convictions. It also sends the word out to similarly inclined people that that kind of action is not OK and will be punished. He hurt the film he was promoting, he set an awful example for how anyone should deal with an upsetting situation and he tarnished the Academy in the process, which he probably doesn’t even care about now that he has an Oscar. Personally, I would like to see him put his money where his hands were and make a tremendously huge donation to charity. Documentary branch member: “I would like for the Academy to have made it clear that his membership would have been revoked had he not resigned. The banishment from the Oscars should have begun that night, before he took the stage to accept the award.” In my opinion, Smith’s movies have contributed so much joy to the audience, and what he did was so out of character, that he should be given a path to redemption, not just a penalty.” Marketing/public relations branch member: “I feel this is as far as the Academy could go at this time legally and within their by-laws. I know that Will Smith will survive the slap and he will be around here 10 years from now. I feel like he got a slap on the wrist instead of what he deserves.” Steven Scott, members-at-large branch: “Since he had already resigned, the Academy’s decision to temporarily — yes, temporarily — remove him means he will suffer no consequences from the Academy for his violent, unprecedented physical and verbal attack on a fellow performer, Chris Rock, for simply not liking his joke.

Will Smith Banned from Oscars for Ten Years (Greek Reporter)

Will Smith has been banned from the Oscars for ten years after the American actor slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage at the awards show.

“We want to express our deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances. He has since refrained from speaking openly about the incident. Rock, after being slapped, seemed stunned.

At the March 27 Academy Awards, Rock came out to present the best documentary award and made jokes about several attendees, including Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett ...

“This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and our Academy family around the world, and we fell short — unprepared for the unprecedented.” We want you to stay.” For this, we are sorry,” the academy said. “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision,” Smith said in response. The academy also apologized for its handling of the situation and allowing Smith to stay and accept his best actor award for “King Richard.” Smith will keep the Oscar he won after the slap, and he will remain eligible to be nominated for and to win more of them in the 10-year period, though he can’t show up to accept them.

Will Smith Reacts to Oscars Ban: 'I Accept and Respect the ... (MovieWeb)

Following the decision made by the Academy to ban Will Smith from all of its events for ten years, the actor made a short and simple statement.

In the wake of the incident, Smith handed in his resignation to the Academy, with a long apology to everyone involved. The punishment given to Smith by the Board of Governors does not prohibit Smith from having his future work considered for an award, and simply means that he would not be able to accept it if he were to win. However, in slapping Rock, Smith has now seen his upcoming movies being impacted, become the subject of hundreds of internet memes and videos, and has opened up a lot of opinion about both himself and his wife from Hollywood insiders, other actors and the public.
