For Chimaev, defeating Burns puts him in the Top 5 and gets him closer to a shot at the title and the chance to prove that he’s more than just a hype machine. As for Hernandez, he is 2-2 so far in his young UFC career, so he needs to rack up wins on a more consistent basis to get some momentum going for himself. He is coming off a loss to Alex Morono, and he is now trying to avoid the first back-to-back losses of his career. Yan hit Sterling with an illegal knee, which really rocked “Funkmaster.” As a result, Yan was disqualified and Sterling was crowned the new champion of the Bantamweight division. Arce, meanwhile, is trying to earn a trip back to the winner’s circle after he was knocked out by Yong Sadong in his last outing, which was his second loss in the last three UFC bouts. After months of back-and-forth of trash talking and accusations, Yan and Sterling will finally get to settle their beef after their first fight ended in a controversial manner. And as admirable of a challenge as “Korean Zombie” will be, I just don’t think he will be the one to dethrone the Aussie. Volkanovski may be giving up height and reach, but he packs more power and has better wrestling. Winner of three straight fights, Mike Malott earned his way to the Octagon with a 39-second submission win over Shimon Smotritsky on Contender Series. The only loss on his record came against current UFC veteran, Hakeem Dawodu, under the now-defunct World Series of Fighting (WSOF) banner. In fact, it could be the deepest card UFC has put on in 2022 to date. After Gastelum got a late replacement in Du Plessis, the former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) winner came down with an injury one week later and was unfortunately forced out of the event, too. But, he is a fan favorite and most fans can’t accept that “The Great” defeated him twice, yes, even in the rematch that so many seem to want to debate. It should be a good thing because Holloway is one of the best 145-pound fighters of all time.

MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom breaks down the UFC 273 main card, which features an anticipated Gilbert Burns vs. Khamzat Chimaev clash.
Torres, who appears to be in the best form of her career, should also carry a significant speed and experience edge into this fight. I wouldn’t mind being wrong, but I’ll take Chimaev to force a stoppage in the second via ground strikes. And though I’m typically one to fade the hype trains until they can provide a more reliable sample size, I can’t help but see the obvious abundance of things like proprioception, fighting instinct and technical skills when watching Chimaev work. For that reason, I’ll be siding with Yan to pull away down the stretch for a competitive decision win. Sterling has endured a lot since their first meeting, as I’ll be curious to see what adjustments he will bring to the table outside of improved pace management. Ronda Rousey-like odds aside, it’s nice to see Alexander Volkanovski getting some overdue respect as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport.

While the brawler is still in Jung — and it isn’t hard to drag it out of him — it is true that it no longer appears to be his first instinct. Sterling could very well be in the best shape he has been in a long time given he’s had plenty of time to heal the wear and tear on his body. If there is anyone who can find a hole in his opponent’s defense, it’s Yan. Plus, his hand speed is amongst the best in the business. Volkanovski is built like a brick house and isn’t easy to get to the mat. Thus, Sterling was hoping to overwhelm Yan early when the Russian is most vulnerable. Thus, it appears there is a route for Jung to secure the upset. He wants to stay on the outside and pick apart Jung with low kicks and straight punches. The talk around Jung is that he has matured to the point where he can’t be considered a reckless brawler anymore. He does a great job of mixing his strikes to all levels, but it’s impossible to miss the insane amount of low kicks he tends to throw. And yet, it could be argued he’s the B-side in the eyes of many fans to his opponent, the Korean Zombie, Chan Sung Jung. Given the legendary battles Jung has put himself through over the years, it isn’t much of a surprise. He’s been fighting the best of the best at featherweight over his last five fights and has yet to see a blemish on his record. Part of the reason Volkanovski hasn’t been able to get the respect many believe he deserves is the lack of finishes on his record.

Now we get to see him against a legitimate threat in the welterweight division. Those wins haven't come against the best competition, but it has gotten stronger every time out. However, he'll have to toe the line between taking advantage of Yan's slow start and conserving energy to be competitive. He's as tough as they come and notoriously difficult to put away. To be fair, each of those four fights has come against elite competition. It's a deep card with several important fights. The co-main event will be a battle for gold as well. The Aussie is a big favorite to retain his title after picking the Korean Zombie for his next defense.
