AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — The weekend couldn't come soon enough for players at the Masters, who really had only two choices as the sun began to set on Augusta ...

I need to get myself there.” I need to get myself there. Strange things can happen on a weekend when the wind blows, especially if the greens dry out more and the shots become that much tougher. “It’s going to be the Masters that I think the Masters Committee has been looking forward to for a number of years. “The rest really isn’t up to me.” “He clearly has control of everything right now based off the last couple of months, so I’m not too surprised,” said Justin Thomas, who matched Scheffler’s 67 but was still seven shots back. They paid good money and probably already have made Scheffler the player of the year. The weekend pressure can be suffocating. That kind of calm attitude has made this a breakthrough year for Scheffler, who suddenly finds himself the No. 1 player in the world. “It’s going to be windy. The last four times the player won, most recently in 2015 when Jordan Spieth picked up a green jacket. It’s going to be cool,” Woods said.

Masters class: Inside Scottie Scheffler's dominant Day 2 at Augusta ... (The State)

Texas Longhorns alum Scottie Scheffler is the Masters leader after 36 holes. Scheffler shot a 5-under 67 in the second round at Augusta National Golf Club.

DraftKings even gave him the third-best odds of anyone to take home the green jacket, tied with Players champion Cameron Smith and Columbia native Dustin Johnson. “It’s nice to build up a little bit of a lead, but I’m not really going to be thinking about it tonight or anything,” Scheffler said. He hit his drive on 14 into the rough on the right side, then left his approach short as it rolled down a bank off the putting surface. It looked destined for the creek guarding the front side of the green. His approach promptly rolled off the right side of the green. Hole No. 11 has played as the toughest on the course through two days. He knew exactly where it landed — that instinct comes from working with the same golfer for 18 years. Then came the third birdie of the day on No. 8. Winds ripped through Augusta National on Friday as the course put on its best Pebble Beach impression. Everyone wanted a glimpse of the ex-Texas Longhorn and the man who tied the record for the largest 36-hole lead in Masters history. Maybe 50 people looked on as Scheffler reared back and obliterated his latest tee shot 309 yards down the middle. There stood Scottie Scheffler, his longtime protegé, the world No. 1 and, in case you haven’t heard, the leader after two rounds of play at the Masters.

Masters 2022 live updates: Tiger Woods struggles on front nine ... (USA TODAY)

The cut has been made and 36 holes remain to crown the 2022 Masters champ. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler begins Saturday with a sizeable lead.

Woods began his third round with a three-putt bogey, his 10-foot putt to save par skirting the left edge of the cup. The Masters is Woods’ first significant tournament since he shattered his right leg in a February 2021 car wreck. Instead of an eagle, he had an easy birdie putt that got him back to even for the day. But Woods chipped to within 3 feet and made the easy putt to stay even for the day. Woods casually struck the ball on what looked like a gimme putt for a three-putt bogey on the par-5 No. 5. But everyone has a lot of ground to make up, with Scottie Scheffler sitting on a five-stroke lead before he tees off for the third round. The five-time Masters champion is playing in his first significant tournament since shattering his right leg in a February 2021 car wreck. He had said it wasn't his game that was the concern but the physical demands of Augusta National, and it seemed as if he was running out of steam on the 11th hole. But he will need to be steady, which was what he was on the first hole, picking up a par. He birdied each of the par-5s, and his 4 on No. 15 got him to 7 under for the tournament. This is Woods' first significant tournament since shattering his right leg in a February 2021 car wreck, and he has said that the physical challenge would be his greatest obstacle. It ran about 2 feet past the hole, and he tapped in for a bogey.

10 things to know about 2022 Masters leader Scottie Scheffler (The Dallas Morning News)

There's no hotter name in golf than Scottie Scheffler. The current No. 1 player in the world is also the big leader heading into the weekend at the 2022...

And while he never his name at the top of the leaderboard like he did early on in 2016, Scheffler’s overall tournament performance was much steadier. Scheffler has made five starts in major tournaments since, and has finished in the top 20 of every tournament. That “height advantage” hasn’t always been the case for Scheffler, though, who was actually on the shorter side until midway through his time high school, when he grew a full foot over his junior and senior years at Highland Park. “So the way I broke my ankle was not tough, but I did play on like a sprained ankle or whatever in the state tournament. It was my left ankle, and I just played all week with my foot turned out to the side and just kind of grinded it out I guess.” Scheffler’s opening-round 69, coupled with three separate rain delays that meant the majority of the field didn’t finish their rounds, gave him top billing for the day, even though a handful of golfers still on the course were a shot or two better at -3 and -2. One of the first pieces of golf hardware that Scheffler won was a UIL state championship in golf. Scheffler won the 4A 2013-2014 state title by six shots in a two-round event. Scheffler won the first four holes of the match and never looked back. And he made good use of that spot in the field. And it was the first-ever sub-60 round to happen without spectators, since it happened right in the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic. Stafford led the Rams to a win over Cincinnati while Scheffler outdueled Patrick Cantlay in a playoff to win the WM Phoenix Open. Meanwhile, Kershaw signed his latest eight-figure contract with the Dodgers a few short weeks later.

He goes on to make the birdie putt to get back the stroke he dropped at No. 1. 1:45 p.m.: A par on No. 3 for Tiger Woods and a bogey from Kisner on the same hole will separate the two a bit on the leader board. 1:16 p.m.: Tiger absolutely PUMMELS a draw at No. 2 and should have a great chance to get on in two. 1:12 p.m.: Tiger finds the first green but his ball comes to rest about a mile from the back hole location. Kisner will at least follow that up with a strong shot on the fourth to have a chance for birdie. After a double bogey, Woods finds the very edge of the bunker, losing out on a good chance for a birdie at No. 6. 5:30 p.m.: Cam Smith joins Schwartzel at six under with a birdie at the 13th. 4:40 p.m.: Scottie continues to keep his foot down and sticks his third shot at the par-5 eighth to five feet for another birdie look. Up at the 18th green, Sungjae Im makes a clutch par to get in the house at four under. Birdie for Scheffler at the 17th to get him back to 10 under. After finding the front bunker with his tee shot at No. 12, his second skids way past the pin and rolls off the back of the green. Still, he has a very good chance to get up and down and save what might be the bogey of his life.

Now 30, Mecklin—who was inspired by James to dedicate her life to pediatric care—is amazed that Scheffler has remained true to who he is in spite of the new heights he’s reached. “I think Scottie respected how James was trying to live his life, to have fun and get good at a sport he enjoyed while trying to deal with cancer and trying to help others with cancer. I like to think as touched as James was by the support, people liked being around him because he was a constant inspiration. "He would come down on Friday and be right back in Austin the next day, but he wanted to do what he could to keep the memory of James going.” And through his education and golf and treatments James continued to spread the word on his mission, annually holding a golf scramble that doubled as a toga party to raise funds to battle the disease, an event Scottie never missed. Shortly after he was told the end was near. In college we would fire up our computers and stream it in the back of class,” Mecklin says. “He spent most of his time at the local golf course.” “I’ve never seen them so happy,” Mecklin says. The surgery replaced 40 percent of his femur and 20 percent of his tibia with metal.

The Masters Weekend Tracker: Track Longhorn Scottie Scheffler as ... (CalBearsMaven)

Former Texas Longhorns Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler tee off on Thursday with all of the eyes of Texas, and the rest of the golf world upon them.

Scheffler birdied his last two holes before he made the turn, and scored a par at No. 10. That would prove difficult for Scheffler after a rough start to the hole. However, Scheffler was able to recover quickly and had an opportunity to putt for birdie. However, Scheffler was once again able to overcome the set back, and knock in the ensuing putt for par. Scheffler has been steady throughout the round and continues to make clutch putt after clutch putt, as he makes his approach to No. 18 green. Spieth took an early jump on No. 2 with a birdie and looked to be in the groove early. Spieth will look to make a surge up the leaderboards in round two after a shaky round one. Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler had a strong first round, entering day two at -3 and in a tie for third. After a bogie on No. 12, Scheffler was able to get a shot back on No. 13 with a birdie. Scheffler had an opportunity to grab a two-shot lead but missed his birdie par on No. 9. With the projected cut at +4, Spieth has little room for error. Now, he will look to continue his momentum into Saturday and further stretch his lead.

Live Updates | Scheffler escapes trouble, leads Masters by 3 (Albuquerque Journal)

Despite big trouble on the 18th hole, Scottie Scheffler salvaged a 1-under 71 that gives him a three-stroke lead heading to the final round of the Masters.

The temperature was in the low 50’s when play got underway for the day on Saturday, unseasonably cool. In terms of total dollars, it’s by far the biggest one-year increase in Masters history. Half the field has teed off so far. Woods begins the round with a 1-over 145 score. An errant approach left Woods on the green 65 feet from the pin. No one is making much of a move on a cool, windy day at the Masters. That matches the biggest 36-hole lead in Augusta National history. The Texan came in with a five-stroke advantage after 36 holes. Smith is at 6-under 210 through three rounds. Cameron Smith posted the best round of the day in very difficult conditions, a 4-under 68 for a 210 overall. He putted it up next to the hole and tapped in from about 2 feet for a bogey that felt so much better. He found his ball but had to take a one-shot penalty for an unplayable lie.

Scottie Scheffler Remains in Masters Lead After Third Round (CalBearsMaven)

Scheffler's lead fell from five strokes to three after he had four bogeys on the back nine on Saturday at Augusta National.

He missed the five-foot par putt but made up for it with birdies at No. 6 and No. 8, the latter of which pushed him to 11-under and gave him a six-shot lead. If he wins the Masters, he’ll be the first player to make the Masters his first win after becoming the world’s No. 1 since Ian Woosnam did it in 1991. With Scheffler back to 11-under and up five shots, he squandered a chance to maintain or build on that lead. He wrapped up the front nine with a par at the par-4 ninth. At 15, Scheffler played cautiously and his third shot found the green, but above the hole, leaving him about 30 feet for birdie. Briefly, Scheffler’s lead fell to three shots after Smith played the 15th hole perfectly and made a birdie. Scheffler played with an utter unflappability on the front nine, playing in the final group with Schwartzel. He also continued his mastery of Augusta National’s risk-reward par-5s. The list of players that have done it before include Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and fellow Longhorn Jordan Spieth, who held the 36-hole lead on his way to his 2015 championship. Instead, Cameron Smith will play with Scheffler on Sunday after shooting a 4-under 68 and finishing three shots back. He decided to take an unplayable lie and a drop, which put him playing his third shot off pine straw about 250 yards away from the green. He chose to putt off the fringe and rolled it to about three feet and made an incredible bogey. His ball was surrounded by branches and Scheffler discussed his options with a rules official.

How clever use of rules helped Scottie Scheffler out of high-stakes ... (Golf.com)

Masters leader Scottie Scheffler hit a wild tee on the 18th hole Saturday. For rules buffs, that's when things got really interesting.

Three-iron in hand, he morphed back into the world’s hottest golfer and laced a shot up to the left side of the green, his ball running by the back-left pin and just off the back of the green. When Scheffler had identified a suitable spot on which to drop, he dropped his ball from knee-level but it kicked into an area that was closer to the hole. Scheffler’s ball was close enough to the bed of needles by the fairway to take his drop there. Scheffler asked the official if he could move pine needles — which are loose impediments — in the intended area of his drop. … I was a bit of a hothead I think in high school and college, so to be able to just stay patient and realize mistakes are going to come, and winning golf tournaments out here is not easy. A return to the tee could have easily resulted in a double-bogey 6 for Scheffler, which would have cut his 54-hole to just two. If it didn’t turn up in the three minutes permitted under the rules, Scheffler would have had to return to the tee and play his third. The resulting spot gave him both a clean lie and a clean look at the green. Scheffler’s ball disappeared into the pines and descended into a snarl of bushes and branches below. The good news: the ball turned up. He wasn’t leading by seven, as he had been when he made the turn on this Masters Saturday, but he still enjoyed a four-shot advantage when he stepped on to the 18th tee. Up ahead of him, Cameron Smith had already signed for a four-under 68 that had moved him to six under for the tournament.

Scheffler’s journey became their journey from afar, and the Kopacs half-jokingly discussed showing up at one of Scottie’s tournaments and holding up a “9W Driving Range” sign — just so he knew they never forgot him. The Schefflers moved to Texas when their son was 6 — Diane had landed a COO job at a Dallas law firm — and over time the Kopacs lost track of the family. “I knew this kid was going to make it,” Kopac told his family before he died. The routine started one ice-cold day when young Scottie begged for a ride to the range, until his father relented and drove him there just to prove it was closed. Surrounded by family, Kopac, a former pro and golf lifer, watched a tournament for the final time last month inside Nyack Hospital. He was dying of pancreatic cancer when he watched Scottie Scheffler win the Arnold Palmer Invitational. His wife, Gertrude, and their five children all worked there, and so did his sister Florence, and they all kept the range open from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m., seven days a week.

Scottie Scheffler fends off wind, cold to lead Masters by 3 strokes (ESPN)

Scottie Scheffler salvaged a 1-under 71 that gave him a 3-stroke lead heading to the final round of the Masters.

He yanked his tee shot into a canopy of trees and twisted branches, leaving him no choice but to take a penalty drop on the pine straw. Tiger Woods finished as Scheffler was still comfortably ahead, and the five-time Masters champion said he feels as though he has seen this before. But then a shot from the front bunker on the par-3 12th went over the green. "You hate bogeying the last hole, but the way I bogeyed it, it for sure felt like a par,'' Scheffler said. Scottie seems to be in that window right now.'' "We take care of it in those windows. And then all I was trying to do was figure out how I was going to get it on the green." Woods won back-to-back ahead of his Masters victory in 2001. He was at 2-under 214 along with Shane Lowry (73). "Should be a great fight tomorrow," Scheffler said. Maybe his next wardrobe change will be a green jacket. AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The harsh cold and relentless wind.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — At times on a frigid and fraught Saturday, Scottie Scheffler appeared in the process of strangling Augusta National Golf Club, a Masters ...

“When I go home and I practice and prepare, I’m preparing knowing exactly what it feels like to be on kind of the biggest stage in golf with cameras and whatnot on you,” Scheffler said. He has the game and the attitude. Instead, he found the first and settled the second. His plan for a nervy Saturday night: kick back and watch a few episodes of “The Office” with his wife. “To be picked for that team as a rookie, it has to give you confidence,” Leonard said. Once on the team, Stricker felt comfortable putting the steady Scheffler with the bizarre Bryson DeChambeau — and all that entails. It was both revelatory about what peers saw in Scheffler’s game and life-changing for a player still in search of a tour win. But those top 10s revealed something about Scheffler’s affinity for more significant moments: a narrow loss in the final at the World Golf Match Play; top-eight finishes at the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open and the British Open; and a third place at the Memorial. Two months ago, he hadn’t won an event on the PGA Tour. Now he has won three of his past five. If Scheffler was the sponge as a kid, he is wringing out every drop of what he learned all around Augusta this week. Scheffler is 25 and decidedly on the rise — at the moment the top-ranked player in the world. “He was pretty quiet, as he is now,” said one of those pros, Justin Leonard, a major champion and Ryder Cup hero.

And those words were uttered before he took three putts at 15 and hooked his tee shot at 18 into a bush and scrambled to salvage bogey.

Can Scottie Scheffler stay hot, biggest surprises and what to expect ... (ESPN)

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler's last few stumbles made things interesting on moving day. Who can catch up? What's in store for Tiger Woods?

And he hit it all over the galaxy on Saturday, but still put up a reasonable score and remains in the mix -- sort of. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised anymore, but I have also been surprised by Cam Smith. He just keeps showing up at the top of leaderboards and hasn't faltered. I think he has too much pride and is too competitive to not finish the tournament. VanHaaren: I agree with Mark that it's probably getting through the first few holes, but it also likely depends on how close it is on the back nine. Scheffler faltered a little on the back nine on Saturday, but it doesn't seem likely he loses given how he has played all week. He was a little bit shaky at the end of the second nine on Saturday, but he still walked away with a 3-stroke lead. Schlabach: Again, I'd be surprised if anyone catches him, but I like Cameron Smith's chances more than anyone else's. He fired a 4-under 68 in the first round and the third. Scheffler bogeyed Nos. 1 and 3 in the second round on Friday. If he stumbles early and Smith is able to put up some red numbers, things might get interesting. But Scheffler is so good around the green and his putter has been hot, so I'd be surprised if he doesn't close the deal. There's going to be a ton of pressure on him on the second nine on Sunday. The Texan has been on a nearly two-month heater that few golfers have ever experienced, and it's probably going to culminate with him winning his first major and a green jacket. But a few stumbles at the end might make Sunday at Augusta National a little more interesting. Watch his second shot on the 18th on Saturday, after he had to take a drop for an unplayable lie.

Back at the club, Moen bought a round of drinks for the 19th-hole crowd and raised a glass to Scheffler and to the club. "I don't think anything has sunk in at the moment," he said. He outplayed the legend on Thursday. On Friday, as Tiger's surgically repaired knee began to fail him, Scheffler took the lead. He'd seen the real thing before -- he coached Spieth, for instance -- and he explained to his friend that the young man ahead of them was not only going to make the tour but build a career on it. Then Scheffler kept winning, at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. He rocketed up the world golf rankings to No. 1. Fields watched the Masters on his phone as he waited at his gate. He got to the course and began to prepare. "Gosh, it was a long morning," he said. Inside the cabin he slipped that jacket on for the first time -- taking it off so he could repeat the ceremony in front of a crowd waiting for him around the 18th green -- and after finishing an interview, he came back outside. He still looked a little dazed and enjoyed a few long seconds of silence until he came back into view of the patrons, who started cheering and clapping. He's seen it hit people he knows, like Jordan Spieth. He turned to his wife in tears. He can't ever go back to the way things used to be.

Scottie Scheffler, Golf's Hottest Player, Dominates at the Masters to ... (Sports Illustrated)

Two months ago, Scottie Scheffler had yet to win on the PGA Tour. Since then he has collected four wins and the world No. 1 ranking -- plus a Masters green ...

He didn’t. He laid up at 13 and made par, stuck it close off the backstop at 14 for birdie and went for the green at the par-5 15th in two with a 5-iron, sending it just over the back of the green. He was born in a New Jersey hospital, his family moved to Dallas when he was 6 years old. When he arrived at the first tee Sunday, he took off his cap to shake hands with the three green-jacketed starters. After missing a pair of short-ish second and third putts on the final green, Scheffler finally batted in the winning putt for double bogey. He is a champion with just the right amount of skill, guts and class. He got up first at the par-3 12th, flared his iron shot and knew it was bad as soon as it left the clubface. “To have it go in was obviously off the charts. Then he hit his pitch shot heavy and watched it land well short of the green and run back down the bank. Smith tried to hit a high pitch, couldn’t stop it near the green, and made bogey. Scheffler was under a tree and may or may not have had a swing, but the scoreboard was his line of sight so he got relief and took a drop about 25 feet away. It’s a rush to judgment but a considered rush — Scheffler may be golf’s king of the hill for the rest of this decade. After he did it in college at the University of Texas. After he dominated Texas junior golf.

No one could have imagined the success Scheffler and Scott would have in their first season as a team. “But having the God of the universe, the Creator, on your side just makes things a lot easier to deal with. The qualities you look for in a person, Ted embodies pretty much all of them.” Their first tournament together was the RSM Classic in November. The top golfer in the world received his first green jacket. Scheffler thanked them in his speech during the green jacket presentation ceremony. “You know, I can’t speak highly enough of Ted as a person, and as a caddie. Like Meredith told me this morning, ‘If you win this golf tournament today, if you lose this golf tournament by 10 shots, if you never win another golf tournament again,’ she goes, ‘I’m still going to love you, you’re still going to be the same person, Jesus loves you and nothing changes.’ All I’m trying to do is glorify God and that’s why I’m here and that’s why I’m in [this] position.” Much of their family was on hand to witness the victory as well. “I have such a great support system, and I’m so blessed,” Scheffler said, taking a moment to hold back tears. The former University of Texas star clinched his first major title Sunday at Augusta National, his third career start in the famed tournament. He was challenged on Sunday, but never relinquished the lead.

Scottie Scheffler Wins His First Masters Championship (The New York Times)

The 25-year-old American, a rising star on the PGA Tour and world No. 1, held off Rory McIlroy and Cameron Smith with a steady final round.

In the last three majors of that season, he finished tied for eighth at the British Open, tied for seventh at the U.S. Open and tied for eighth at the P.G.A. Championship. Scheffler later extended his lead over Smith and McIlroy with a birdie on the 14th hole that was set up by a spectacular approach shot. While McIlroy was surging, Smith also made another run at Scheffler with a birdie at the 11th hole that kept Scheffler’s lead to three strokes. Smith had the honors on the tee, which he ascended before Scheffler. He appeared eager to apply pressure. McIlroy, who has won every major golf championship except the Masters, was not expected to be part of the late-round heroics on Sunday. He had broken par in only one of his first three rounds. “And at the worst possible time.” A few minutes after McIlroy holed his bunker shot, his playing companion, Collin Morikawa, blasted from the same hazard and sank his shot. His margin of victory would have been larger but for a final show of some nerves during the tournament’s closing sequence on the 18th green, when Scheffler needed four putts, including three from less than five feet, to close out a round of 71. From the first win, it took Scheffler only 42 days to ascend to the No. 1 ranking. “I’ve felt at peace on the golf course,” he said, laughing. Scheffler took a bold, aggressive line and confidently knocked a chip into the hole for birdie. Over the next several hours, Scheffler, 25, rebuffed every challenge with the same aplomb to claim his first major championship, running away to win the 2022 Masters by three strokes.

Smith's last hurrah was a birdie at the tough 11th hole that brought the margin back to three shots. But Scheffler chipped in for an unlikely birdie at No. 3, Smith made bogey and it wasn't really close after that two-shot swing. He finished at 10-under 278 overall, winning for the fourth time in his last six tournaments.

Scheffler ended up finishing by three shots over Rory McIlroy to win his first major championship.

"I obviously wasn't playing my best out there," Woods told CBS after the round. Last year, Woods watched the tournament from a hospital bed after sustaining multiple injuries in a high-speed car crash. Scheffler was paired with Cameron Smith, a 28-year-old from Australia, in the final round.

With All the Answers to Sunday at the Masters, Scottie Scheffler ... (Sports Illustrated)

The final round at Augusta National had drama but not much of it came from Scottie Scheffler, as the world No. 1 added a Masters title to his exploding ...

This week, Woods compared Scheffler to Fred Couples in 1992, because Couples had a torrid start to the year, won the Masters, and ascended to the No. 1 ranking. But Scheffler said it dissipated on the first hole, and Scott could tell that by the time Scheffler chipped in for birdie on No. 4, he was in a groove. Scheffler said “I calmed down when I got to the course.” His approach was as simple as Yoda’s words on the yardage book protruding out of the left back pocket of caddie Ted Scott: Do or do not. He aimed at a bunker: “It seemed like the safest play at the time.” But he remembered the goal was to clear the water, not to make eagle. “I enjoyed yesterday and today on the golf course thoroughly … I didn’t break my concentration once. You can’t just limp your way in.” Scheffler could have laid up on the par-5 15th, but he realized he was just a 5-iron away from clearing the water, and so that is what he hit. Scott sensed his man was a bundle of energy when he teed off. Sergio Garcia moaned, “It's difficult for me to get it going here other than one year,” and the fact he won that one year seems to be beside the point to him. In the moment, you think it’s a lot bigger deal than it is.” Don’t hit it in the water on 12.’ All of that stuff.” But he showed up here with all the answers to the test.
