Texas Rangers 2022 Preview, Part II: A Talented But Unproven ... (Sports Illustrated)

The Texas Rangers lineup will surely be better in 2022. As for the pitching staff, there are many questions that need to be answered.

Remember, the Rangers still have plenty of money to invest in the team next winter. Rangers fans have every reason to be very excited for the future of the pitching staff. You could see Winn make his debut at some point this season, but he will have to put up the same type of performance from last year with Double-A Frisco as the No. 1 starter for Triple-A Round Rock. Now the handcuffs are gone and the Rangers will get a much better idea of what Dunning can bring to the table. Brock Burke was the surprise of spring training, earning a spot as a multi-inning reliever. Howard, a former top prospect in the Philadelphia Phillies organization, might have the highest upside of the three. The former first-round pick has always had nasty stuff, and that could play better in shorter stints. If he does that and finds a way to avoid another lengthy injury, Bush could be a huge asset. As a wiser, more-seasoned pitcher than he was in his first stint with Texas, could Pérez be the next veteran to find success here? The Royse City native now owns a five-pitch mix that gives him confidence to attack hitters. Dane Dunning and Taylor Hearn, both acquired in trades during this rebuild, have the first two cracks at the starting rotation. $56 million secured Jon Gray, a quality veteran starter to front the 2022 rotation.

Texas is looking to snap that streak this season, as they hit the jackpot in free agency by bringing in Corey Seager and Marcus Semien (who was a Blue Jay last season) as well as Jon Gray and Kole Calhoun. The farm system is trending up, the big league team is improved and suddenly things feel more optimistic in Arlington than they have in years. This is the home opener for the Toronto Blue Jays, who are looking to continue where they left off in 2021: looking for a postseason berth.

Ready to Start: Setting The Table For The 2022 Texas Rangers ... (D Magazine)

And I won't blame you, either. It's not particularly enjoyable in the moment to watch a bad baseball team, and despite the considerable strides they've taken ...

Once good becomes great, it will make sense to you—matter to you—in a way it never could if you tuned in only for the action scenes. That’s not coming for a while, but neither is the urgency, the stress, the suffering. You’ll enjoy it so much more if you treat each game as a chapter in the origin story of the next playoff team, watching in real time as one or more of the young rotation arms grow from seedlings to success, as Seager cements himself as the best shortstop in Arlington since Alex Rodriguez, as next week’s minor-league gems become tomorrow’s, then today’s. Before you know it, the bad baseball team will become an OK one, then a good one. Now through the first playoff appearance is the honeymoon period, the halcyon days when improvement is a virtue and progress is celebrated for its own sake. The soil is once again fertile down on the farm, and a third of this lineup—Seager, Semien, and Garver—can hit with the very best of baseball, which is three more players than could be said of last year’s. Opening Day starter Jon Gray is solid at the top of the rotation, at minimum, and, if past precedent tells us anything, quite possibly more than that. I’ve yet to hear any indication this wave will be; by all accounts, this offseason was the start of the newer, more aggressive Rangers, which is the only way a big-market club playing in a still-fresh ballpark should act.

How much cash did you go though on hot dogs at the ballpark? It hasn’t been easy to follow a team that hasn’t contended for the postseason since 2016. Much respect for hanging in there, especially the past few years. The team is celebrating 50 years in Arlington throughout the season, which they’ll kick off with a two-game set against the Colorado Rockies at Globe Life Field on Monday afternoon and Tuesday night. But Toronto left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr’s RBI double in the bottom of the frame and a home run by catcher Danny Jansen gave the Blue Jays the winning two-run margin. “I kind of blame myself for not covering it up or doing something with it,” Gray said. Dennis Santana took the loss. First baseman Nathaniel Lowe singled in Seager, and Garver scored on Andy Ibanez’s fielder’s choice. A wild pitch scored Semien and moved Seager to second before catcher Mitch Garver walked. The Rangers’ season opener saw them score early and often as they built a 7-0 lead through their first four at-bats.

Teoscar Hernandez had a three-run blast and scored the game-winning run as the Toronto Blue Jays rallied for a raucous 10-8 win over the Texas Rangers on ...

Guerrero singled home George Springer in the fourth and advanced Bichette to second. Hernandez was called out at home plate by umpire Bill Welke when Gurriel doubled to deep left and advanced to third on Miller's throw. By the middle of the fourth inning Texas had built a 7-0 lead. Springer drew a two-out walk before Bichette and Guerrero had back-to-back singles to score again. He couldn't get his first out until he was six batters into the Rangers' lineup and Toronto was trailing 3-0. Guerrero, Hernandez, and Marcus Semien — who signed with Texas in the off-season after playing for the Blue Jays last year — formally received their Silver Slugger awards. Dennis Santana, one of four Texas relievers, took the loss. Brad Miller and Adolis Garcia added solo blasts for the visitors. Jose Berrios gave up four runs in just a third of an inning as Toronto's Opening Day starter escaped with a no decision. "I think there's not a single player in this clubhouse that is going to forget today, what happened today." "When it came to game I was trying to be too perfect, I think like too nasty and I didn't throw the ball over the plate," he said. "We always knew it was going to be like that from the beginning," said Hernandez. "We're just excited to be back and enjoy every single moment with the fans."

It only took one game to realize the 2022 Texas Rangers' identity (Nolan Writin')

The offense is lightyears ahead of the pitching, even despite Jon Gray being solid on the mound before leaving with a blister in the fourth inning. It was the kind of the production from this lineup that we’re going to grow accustomed to seeing just based on how it’s built. The Texas Rangers scored 10 runs on Opening Day in 2021 and weren’t able to to repeat that feat very often as their offense struggled to produce consistently.
