Torkelson will have his moments, and even months where he looks better, but by the fall Greene will have met his considerable hype. This kid falls out of the bed every morning crushing the ball and making an impact — both at the plate and in the field. The Tigers finished a surprising third in the AL Central last year, but a lot of that had to do with the division being one of the majors’ worst. There’s reason to believe he’s the best prospect in the farm system, and based on spring training, he could soon wind up as the best hitter in the Tigers’ lineup. Skubal has the stuff to be dominant and showed that stuff a year ago. If the Tigers manage his workload and he stays committed to his splitter, we could see a big leap. Compared to Torkelson, Greene was the better hitter in Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo last season. (If ever there was a year to play more than four games against the Pirates…) But their inability to take series from powers such as the Blue Jays and Rays will leave the Tigers at home in mid-October. But this team will have bouts of inconsistency because of the young pitchers and reliance on young hitters like Torkelson and — eventually — Greene. Petzold: No. The Tigers will play meaningful baseball down the stretch, but they won’t snap their postseason drought in 2022. But even with the improved roster and Hinch’s magic touch, the organization appears to be a few developments — rather than free-agent signings — away from cracking the postseason. The Tigers made several outstanding offseason additions to boost the lineup for manager AJ Hinch, one of the best skippers in baseball.

“We’re meeting up with a bunch of coworkers from our office who we haven’t seen much since the pandemic started, really looking forward to it.” Nearby the group he was with were lounging in chairs under a collapsible canopy. So is wearing the suit festooned with the baseball team’s logos. He donned a brand new jacket for the occasion. Julian Clinton, 19, of Detroit said he’s a big Tigers and baseball fan. “It’s just amazing and we love it.” They said they have been coming to Detroit Tigers games for over 30 years together. “Downtown feels just like we left it. It’s a memory I’ll never forget so I want to give my boys that,” Joe Clarkston said. They got there at about 8 a.m. Friday to set up the canopy, chairs, the TV, grill and snacks and beverages for family and friends who will join the later. At 10:30, with light sprinkles falling, Comerica Park's gates opened and the throngs of fans started making their way through metal detectors to get inside. You can’t stop living because of COVID.”
The Detroit Tigers announced their final roster moves of the offseason Wednesday, revealing the 28 players who will make up the Opening Day roster.
Home runs were Skubal’s undoing as a rookie, and he’ll need to be careful working up in the zone again this season. Last season, he paired a low strikeout rate with a tendency to give up hard contact, and the results weren’t pretty. We’ll see if Chris Fetter can get him turned around before Michael Pineda arrives and forces the team to make a tough decision. While the power numbers are nice, the Tigers would much rather he post a higher OBP and sit at the top of the order for the entire season. He has the strikeout rate to get through any lineup, as evidenced by his dominance against the mighty Toronto Blue Jays in his final spring start. Mize always skewed more toward efficiency than swing-and-miss as a prospect, but his first full MLB season was a little too much of the former. Baez will be a massive upgrade for the Tigers defensively and on the base paths. That’s exactly what the Tigers are hoping for this year, though, as he gets the nod on Opening Day in Detroit. He led MLB in doubles a year ago, and while that might be hard to duplicate, there are no signs his steady production will decline. Instead of the on-base machine who could draw walks at the top of the order, he was more of an all-or-nothing, extra-base hit or strikeout guy. He’ll likely start the season in the bottom third of the lineup, but if his minor league track record is any indication, that might not last long. Everyone is talking about Detroit’s new additions and how much they’ll help the team defensively, but the same argument can be made at second base.
Rainy, chilly and chance of a thunderstorm. Sound familiar?
Fortunately for the White Sox and Tigers, weather will slowly start to clear as the weekend moves along, meaning that some baseball will still be played, even if temperatures remain on the cool side for the rest of the series. The White Sox Opening Day lineup, with Lucas Giolito at pitcher and José Abreu at first base will face showers, temperatures in the 40s and chance of a thunderstorm, according to the National Weather Service in Detroit. NBC Chicago's Brant Miller says winds coming out of the north at 10-to-15 miles per hour will likely push the wind chill toward the freezing mark, making for a cold day at the ballpark for visiting fans.
All should be well, right? Well, with every season of hope comes terrifying concerns that all Tigers fans are all too accustomed to with any competitive team ...
Absolutely. Do I have faith and trust in the team that Avila and Hinch are building and the organization’s direction? Obviously, the Tigers see something in the new staff that we as fans do not. Do I believe that Sean Manaea could have been an excellent rotation piece and could have really made the team whole? Although the potential is there for Manning, Detroit needs to trust that he will take the next step forward and be the player we all hope he can be. I see one of two reasons for staying still in the market. Maybe those are different circumstances given that Derek Hill is also hurt, but to right away find a replacement, it just seems odd that there has not been the same momentum for finding pitching help.
How to follow and watch the Detroit Tigers play the Chicago White Sox in their Opening Day game at Comerica Park, April 8, 2022.
It remains to be seen if the reinforcements are enough to supplant the White Sox as kings of the American League Central. The Sox didn't add a ton in the offseason and still are the odds-on favorites to win the division for the second year in a row, thanks to an impressive offensive core of Jose Abreu, Tim Anderson, Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert. Lucas Giolito had 201 strikeouts in 178-plus innings in 2021 and gets the nod in the opener. Dylan Cease (226 strikeouts last season) and Michael Kopech (103 strikeouts in 69 innings) aren't as polished as Giolito but have the talent to be stars. Additions including, but not limited to, Javier Baez and Eduardo Rodriguez will be in action Friday and should improve a team that won 77 games last year. If Spencer Torkelson is as good as advertised, the Tigers will have a good offense. Game notes: The Tigers got some bad news — sorry, Riley Greene, hope to see you in the coming months — before they broke camp but there's still plenty of optimism around the 2022 season. It took a replay review to send Tigers players dancing on the field with a 5-4 win. But Cabrera greeted Hendriks with a first-pitch bloop single that dropped into right-center field at a crisp 79.4 mph to tie the game. The Tigers had a little more magic left. The Tigers put together a rally in the eighth inning when Grossman singled and Meadows drew his third walk of the game with one out. It came after Robbie Grossman got hit by a pitch and Meadows drew a walk to lead off the inning. But Rodriguez’s Tigers career got off to a rocky start.
DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers finished strong in 2021, stocked up with players this winter and will start the new season with higher expectations than at ...
The Tigers are No. 18. Finally, let’s move on to the algorithms. Judging by all the sub-.500 predictions above, that’s hard to argue. Most prognosticators think the Tigers have the potential to be a surprise team in 2022. Here’s the note of caution appended to ESPN’s prediction: “Usually when a team is building around a young rotation, we say the team will go only as far as that rotation will take it. “But if half of them perform like they’re capable of, this team will beat up on mediocre pitching all year and be surprisingly enjoyable to watch in the process.”
Miguel Cabrera, Eric Haase and Javier Baez all came up clutch to give the Detroit Tigers an Opening Day win over Chicago White Sox, 5-4.
In the first, he struck out Pollock and got Luis Robert to ground out. "He was pitching his game, and they just made him work," Barnhart said. "He's a good player all the way around. "Tork had some big plays at first, which is a good reminder, don't just go to the batting average on Tork," Hinch said. He also threw 27 pitches in the second. The spirit of the rule is to protect the guy at second. Garcia flipped the ball to second baseman (and ex-Tiger) Josh Harrison, who fired to Jose Abreu at first for a double play. "By the letter of the law, you can't make contact with the guy and impede the throw," Hinch said. He entered as a pinch-hitter for starting catcher Tucker Barnhart in the eighth. The next batter, Cabrera, grounded out to White Sox shortstop Leury Garcia and controversy ensued. I was just trying to look for the fastball. But White Sox designated hitter Andrew Vaughn delivered a go-ahead solo home run in the ninth.
DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers made Opening Day memories aided by new players, a franchise legends and a catcher who grew up down the street.
The crowd was announced at 43,480, a sellout. The call was confirmed on replay review and the inning was over. But he also made some nice scoops at first base and a diving stab of a liner in the sixth. It was a chilly afternoon in downtown Detroit, with the sun making only an occasional appearance. Meadows drew three walks Friday for just the third time in his career. He took some big cuts at the plate and missed many of them -- striking out twice -- but also made a web gem in the field. I just hate the rule.” Jeimer Candelario worked the count to 3-2 against Sox reliever Kendall Graveman before shooting an RBI single through the right side of the infield. “So I think John did a good job of interpreting the rule. Umpires confirmed moments later that the call had been overturned and the game was over. Even before the ninth-inning heroics, Baez was just as advertised. Upon seeing the replay on the video board, the Tigers started belatedly celebrating Baez’s walk-off hit.
Detroit Tigers went 7-12 in 19 games against Chicago White Sox in 2021, taking four of nine at Comerica Park and three of 10 at Guaranteed Rate Field.
"We're going to face him a lot more than just two games," Skubal said. "I think the rivalry is because they're the defending champs," Tigers manager AJ Hinch said, "and they've been sort of the best in class, the last few years a playoff team. We both made the playoffs in '15, they won the division, we won the wild card. I'm excited for that challenge." "I'm not sad he's missing the first two, but I'll see him many more times after that." I think there's going to be that competitive rivalry, in the sense that we both want to win every time we're playing each other." He is making his MLB debut, after hitting 30 home runs in the minor leagues last season. "We can compete with anybody, and we're ready to roll," Tigers third baseman Jeimer Candelario said. The Tigers and White Sox had a benches clearing standoff Sept. 27, sparked by Tigers reliever Alex Lange hitting White Sox slugger Jose Abreu in the elbow with an 0-2 fastball in the ninth inning. They got to pitch to us. "But they are the people that we need to beat a lot to win our division, and that's the goal: To win our division. That's how the Tigers envision the season unfolding.
It has been 1100 days since the Detroit Tigers had a home opener without capacity limits. Detroiters celebrated that in full force on Friday.
"It was so much, the roar of the crowd," Torkelson said. "We came last year and did something on the roof of the (Detroit) Opera House. ... That was hard, I cried all day," he said. "The Lord's day and her birthday," Tony said of the short list. Manoogian said he knew the rain wouldn't be a problem. The fans wanted to see a win, something that came up often. "We enjoy it so much, getting our pictures taken with everyone and the kids," Pam added. "We've got the beautiful fans here in Detroit supporting us, it was a great crowd today," Candelario said. Tony and Pam Rinna said they understand the buzz as well as any followers of the team. "Opening Day has always been the most important day in my family, it's a very sacred holiday," Manoogian said. That would include the youngest player on the field, Spencer Torkelson. It was a team effort on Friday, starting with Jeimer Candelario's RBI single in the sixth. Max Manoogian, one of the men responsible for those scents, viewed Friday's festivities before the Detroit Tigers' opener as a rite of passage.
I don't want it to be nice,” Detroit Tigers fan Zack Fredericks of Bingham Farms said about the cold April weather. “It wouldn't be the Tigers."
It was hard to talk about the Tigers in the parking lot of the Tin Roof bar. People stopped him to take selfies with the ersatz commander-in-chief. What also may surprise him is some of the team’s heralded young players having a breakout season, he said. They have been doing it for 10 to 15 years. Baseball is back and the Tigers won. He was still chattering when a reporter bid adieu to the family in the fifth inning. Opening Day is a celebration of the return of a sport that binds generations of families, said fans. He allowed that wishful thinking may have been part of his calculations. The cacophony surrounding Opening Day doesn’t wait for the first pitch. I also believe the Lions are good.” In the Heller family, it’s an unofficial holiday from work and school. “It’s fun.

- “Legendary.” - “Nice.” - “Bold.” The Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 5-4 on a wild walk-off hit by Javier Báez in the bottom of the 9th to score fellow Tigers newcomer, Austin Meadows. The hit was originally called an out after it looked like the ball deflected off of the outfielder’s glove before he caught it as it was headed towards the ground. He has concerts scheduled for Friday and Saturday night at Detroit’s Masonic Temple. He will be at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids this Sunday. And, wait for it...
Javier Baez drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning after Eric Haase tied the game with a one-out home run.
But it's about competing and coming back the next day and try again." We are going to play the whole game and we got rewarded for it ... We're going to need a lot of guys to step up. It's not going to be easy but it's going to be fun. He walked two with two outs in the first and gave up a two-strike RBI single to Eloy Jimenez. "For Javy, it's just trying to calm down the moment to where you are in control of the moment," Hinch said. "It's not going to be easy," he said. "There's going to be a lot of games like this this year," said Báez, who had two hits and made an incredible backhanded play earlier in the game. "During the game I made that adjustment and slowed everything down." "Coming off the bench, I know they're going to be nit-picky (around the strike zone) and I didn't really get a whole lot of good pitches to hit," Haase said. Baez was belatedly but joyously mobbed on the field by his new teammates and serenaded by the fans — "Javy, Javy" — as he left the field. "I knew we were going to win this game," Jeimer Candelario said. It's going to be a real fun summer."
The Detroit Tigers host the Chicago White Sox at 1:10 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2022. Bally Sports Detroit and WXYT-FM (97.1) will broadcast it.
(Though the Tigers struggled to score early against the White Sox on Friday, picking up all five runs off ChiSox relievers in the final four innings.) Granted, it’s a pair of small samples, but in five plate appearances vs. Considering the Tigers’ lineup has arguably gotten stronger in each of those three seasons, it doesn’t exactly bode well for the newest, most-improved version of the franchise’s offense. Add in Robbie Grossman’s two singles and a walk (plus a strikeout) in five plate appearances, and Jonathan Schoop’s two singles, two homers and a double in 16 plate appearances against Cease, and you start to see how the Tigers’ offense might be coaxed to wake up a little earlier with a steaming Coney sitting right in front of them. Cease, Baez is 2-for-5 with a double and a home run. Detroit Tigers (1-0) vs.
The Tigers won a wild one with a walk-off hit off the wall on opening day and look to seize the series against the Sox.
A cursory glance at the stats suggests that his high strikeout rate comes at the price of some efficiency, which puts some stress on the bullpen behind him every time he takes the mound. Mize also shelved the cutter last year — which was slightly above average — and stretched it out to a slider that was a versatile weapon for him all year. Dylan Cease is coming off a very impressive 2021 season that saw him lead the American League in starts and strikeouts per nine innings, helping the ChiSox earn a division title in his third major league season. After slow starts in his first two seasons, the 24-year-old is embarking on his third major league campaign in 2022 and looking to build on his modest improvements in 2021. The expected weighted on-base average against the slider (xwOBA) was a meager .294. The point being, Mize has a good deal more to work with than the splitter, and the combination of better infield defense and more of a four-seam heavy mix could set him up for a really strong season. His slider (85.9 mph) is his most prolific secondary offering at a 28.1% clip, followed up by his splitter (85.8 mph) and his curve (81.3 mph) which he logs in at 13.2% and 6.8%, respectively. Detroit’s top three hitters in the batting order reached base nine times in 14 plate appearances against Chicago on Friday, scoring four runs in the process. His best performance came on April 29, 2021, when he tossed six innings of three-run ball with six strikeouts and no home runs allowed in the losing effort; his team only put up one run in support. Casey Mize will open his 2022 campaign looking to build on a nice first full season in the majors. Make no mistake, if Cease has his stuff under control, as he did for much of his breakout 2021 season, the Tigers are in for a tough afternoon. The Detroit Tigers started off the 2022 campaign with a wild win over the visiting Chicago White Sox on Friday afternoon, mounting a late-inning comeback to grab a 5-4 victory after starter Eduardo Rodríguez stumbled out of the gates. It was the kind of game that makes one grateful that baseball is back.
DETROIT -- When Elvin Rodriguez called his family in the Dominican Republic to let them know he had made the Detroit Tigers' big-league roster, ...
Married and with a second child on the way, Barnes needed the extra couple days to get his life settled. “Opening Day never gets old, but this one was definitely the most unique.” “I decided to do the latter part.” Part of the problem was that pitchers didn’t know exactly when baseball was going to start up. “With the shortened spring training, I knew the odds were against me,” Barnes said. But Hinch said that’s OK. Just getting a brief taste of big-league life now will make it easier for Rodriguez the next time around. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch tried to pare down the roster as rapidly as possible to get enough innings and reps for his regular players. Any sort of structured “ramp up” was difficult. When the Tigers told Barnes he was going to Toledo, they intended it as a courtesy. When injuries mounted on the pitching side, it became necessary to call back players like Rodriguez and Barnes who had already been sent out. Teams are allowed to carry 28 players for the first three weeks of the season. For one, the rosters are bigger.
DETROIT -- Eric Haase, the Detroit-area native who hit a dramatic home run in his first Opening Day at Comerica Park, is getting the start in Game 2 on ...
“I’m just warning you that (the lineups) are kind of pre-made. He worked the count full before driving one over the left field fence against Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendriks. Haase will catch starting pitcher Casey Mize and hit seventh in the Tigers’ batting order.
DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers got the full Javier Baez experience in a four-hour span on Friday afternoon. It was a roller coaster, with a few dips along ...
Umpires confirmed moments later that the call had been overturned and the game was over. “That’s what we need.” Let’s go Tigers!” Upon seeing the replay on the video board, the Tigers started belatedly celebrating Baez’s walk-off hit. “We need your support. Sox right fielder A.J. Pollock attempted to catch Baez’s blast against the wall.
