Pujols was joined in the Opening Day lineup by Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina.
Wainwright threw eight innings and held the Braves to three runs on seven hits; Molina notched a hit; and Pujols drove in a run on two hits and drew a base on balls. Molina also was absent for a stretch late in 2010, meaning the Cardinals were largely relying upon Matt Pagnozzi to start behind the plate. The Cardinals had previously named Wainwright as their Opening Day starter, and there was no question that Molina would be the one doing the catching.

His skill set and the team’s trust in him both suggest he’ll have many opportunities to pitch in front of them, and on happier occasions. Unfortunately, Pallante’s family will not be in attendance this weekend, traveling instead to Ohio for the funeral of his grandfather, who passed away last weekend at 97 years old. “That was never part of my mind,” Pallante said about the possibility that he would break camp with the club this spring. There are six realistic milestones that Albert Pujols could achieve in 2022 for the St. Louis Cardinals, including hitting 700 homers and 3000 games.
As baseball fans, let’s hope that Albert Pujols can get at least 21 homers and 65 RBI as if he can reach those two milestones, he will achieve all of the other milestones on here. Pujols had 65 hits in 296 plate appearances in 2021 and 120 hits in 545 plate appearances in 2019, so the 118 hits will be much more difficult but not insurmountable. Albert Pujols is third on the all-time RBI list with 2,150. He had 119 total bases in 2021 and 211 total bases in 2019. Albert Pujols also has played in 2,971 games in his career, which is 12th all-time. The only player with more is Pete Rose, who started on Opening Day in 23 of his 24 MLB seasons.

Wainwright throws six shutout innings for his 100th victory at Busch Stadium and extends his scoreless streak to 32 consecutive innings vs. Pittsburgh.
Pujols twice reached base as a result of an error by a Pirates’ infielder, and two other times the Cardinals were able to get a runner on base when a play was not made by a Pittsburgh defender. Leadoff hitter Dylan Carlson hit a fly ball that got caught in the wind and veered down into fair territory, out of the reach of Pirates’ third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes. Paul Goldschmidt followed with the first of his opening day record four walks, and then Carlson scored from second on O’Neill’s infield single. He did not walk a batter in sixth inning, and he extended his scoreless inning streak against the Pirates to 32 consecutive. The return of Pujols, the retirement of Molina, and the presence of 16 members of the team’s Hall of Fame brought a sellout crowd of 46,256 to Busch. ... OF Greg Allen was placed on the 60-day injury list with a left hamstring issue. The 42-year-old played 11 seasons in St. Louis (2001-2011) and helped the Cardinals to a pair of World Series championships before leaving to join the Los Angeles Angels. Added Wainwright: “The time that he was here (before), he was a franchise player. The DH helps a lot as well. “We have a lot of depth, one through nine. Hayes said the issue was minor and not related to a wrist injury that spoiled his 2021 season. “I was trying to hold it in a little bit,” Pujols said. Molina made his franchise-record 18th successive opening day start. Wainwright (1-0) allowed five hits in his sixth opening day start and first since 2016. The 40-year-old struck out six and did not walk a batter. A guy who changed the game and was the face of baseball in St. Louis. To see him come back, to be a part of this clubhouse again, is really, really cool.” Fans stood and cheered Pujols for nearly a full minute prior to his first at-bat, a flyout to left in the first inning.
ST. LOUIS -- Oliver Marmol was still three hours from managing his first Major League Baseball game when he notched his first unofficial victory.
But I think we’re going to have a very powerful offense.” Arenado’s words were very similar to what Marmol said three hours before the first pitch, when he predicted the Cardinals would surprise with their offensive firepower. Six Cardinals players had a hit, led by the two from O’Neill and Harrison Bader. Newly installed leadoff hitter Dylan Carlson led off the bottom of the first with an opposite-field double and later had a sacrifice fly. “The speed and the power that we have at the top of this lineup, it’s pretty much everything we can ask for. O’Neill made the Pirates pay both in the first and second innings when they pitched around Goldschmidt and were forced to face his wrath with runners on base. The top five hitters were on base 13 times, and even No. 9 hitter Edman drilled a home run through a burst of rain late in the day. Other than the many emotions he felt, Pujols said his biggest takeaway was the potential of the Cards' lineup. Today was a good start.”","type":"markdown","__typename":"Markdown"},"$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({\"locale\":\"en-us\",\"slug\":\"tyler-o-neill-collects-five-rbis-in-cardinals-opening-day-win\",\"type\":\"story\"}).parts.13":{"contentDate":"2022-04-07T23:24:56.398Z","description":"Nolan ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright (1-0) pitched six scoreless innings, Tyler O'Neill hit a three-run homer and drove in five, and the St. Louis Cardinals ...
The 2021 NL Cy Young Award winner allowed three runs and four hits in five innings. Chris Martin (1-0) got two outs for the win in his Cubs debut. It remained tied until the eighth, when the Royals’ Michael Taylor worked a walk off Triston McKenzie (0-1) and then took second on Nicky Lopez’s sacrifice bunt. Andrew Benintendi drove in Witt after his clutch hit, giving Royals reliever Scott Barlow (1-0) a cushion. Fried (0-1) allowed five runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. Megill (1-0), a 6-foot-7 right-hander who reached the majors last June, allowed three hits and no walks while striking out six.
O'Neill becomes first Cardinal hitter since 1928 with five RBIs on opening day, while Wainwright pitches six scoreless for 100th win at Busch III.
The lineup that scored the second fewest runs at home in 2021 would be the unexpected strength of the 2022 Cardinals. The offense, he said, isn’t at “the forefront” when fans discuss the Cardinals, but once the team lifted the blinds on opening day the fans would see it. In the eighth, Goldschmidt capped his day with a single to reach base in all five plate appearances, and after O’Neill’s sacrifice fly, Goldschmidt scored on Arenado’s homer. “We talked about not being a one-trick pony and selling out for (home runs) and being able to do different things,” Marmol said. “We want to get super-stubborn about not leaving the (strike) zone, and when they come in the zone scaring them back out of it. The phrase he repeated as a goal for the lineup: “No breathing room.” For the first time since April 2019, the Cardinals welcomed a full house to opening day and greeted the sellout crowd of 46,256 with the usual parade of players on trucks, showcase of World Series trophies, and the presence of 16 Cardinals Hall of Famers in their red coats. The Pirates, their shallow pitching thinned further by Brubaker’s three-inning start and Duane Underwood Jr.’s injury after facing one batter, hinted at where opponents are going to target in the Cardinals’ lineup. He got nine outs from the first 10 batters he faced, and he struck out five of them. He added a sacrifice fly in between homers from Edman and Nolan Arenado as the Cardinals’ widened their lead on the rudderless Pirates. O’Neill has a home run on three consecutive opening days, prompting a question on whether it was his favorite day on the calendar. Wainwright retired the Pirates in order in the first inning, elevating one of his fastest pitches at nearly 90 mph, to strike out Ke’Bryan Hayes and end the inning. “We have a lot of depth, one through nine, and everyone is dangerous. And Tyler O’Neill’s five RBIs tied a club record for opening day last matched in 1928.

Pujols was 0-for-5 in his first game back as a Cardinal, reaching twice on errors by Pittsburgh defenders. He described catching the eye of a smiling Ozzie Smith and forcing himself to duck down and away, wiping the tears from his face. He mused that if Goldschmidt walked four times in every game this season, O’Neill could very well finish with 300 RBI. That total may be slightly high, but it’s demonstrative of the potential of a lineup that O’Neill himself described as “an offensive force.” Less than half an hour after that meeting with the manager, at 12:11 p.m., Albert Pujols stepped into the cage on the field for his first game day round of batting practice as a Cardinal in more than ten years. Tyler O’Neill racked up four RBI in the game’s first two innings and five total, marking his third consecutive opening day with a home run. The noise was louder at his first appearance in archive footage on the video board.

“You never know; it’s Opening Day and stuff kind of gets blown out of proportion,” Goldschmidt said of his second four-walk performance in his career. There are going to be ups and downs, and it is what it is.” “You don’t see that a lot, and then he finds a way to get a knock in his last at-bat. While plenty of praise was heaped onto retiring stars Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina, and Wainwright extending his scoreless innings streak against Pittsburgh to 32, it was Goldschmidt who was credited with setting the stage for the offensive onslaught with his plate patience. As for those aforementioned walks, Goldschmidt became the first MLB player with four walks in a season opener since Manny Ramirez was given that many passes in 2002. Instead, Arenado found himself in awe of Paul Goldschmidt for what the fellow All-Star did not do in Thursday’s 9-0 romp over Pittsburgh. Showing a patience uncommon among most sluggers, Goldschmidt refused to chase bad balls and walked four times -- three of them coming during rallies that produced runs.
