Despite their tough seasons, the Guardians and Royals each featured a player in the top seven of American League MVP voting. Cleveland went 80-82 last season, going 40-41 both on the road at home. He threw 72 pitches, which could be the norm for Guardians starting pitchers the first time through the rotation as pitchers continue to build toward their normal workloads. The Guardians brought the potential go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth after Steven Kwan, who also had two walks, singled to right field for his first career hit in the major leagues.

"It was a dream come true, truly," Witt said. The son of a longtime major league pitcher, Witt was chosen by the Royals with the second overall pick in the 2019 draft. Witt worked his way around the diamond to get his first hit. With Adalberto Mondesi penciled in at shortstop, Witt pivoted to third base this spring with eyes on winning a big league job. With two outs and Michael A. Taylor on second base, Witt yanked a second-pitch Triston McKenzie slider into the left-field corner for his first RBI and Kansas City's first lead. "But beforehand, the introductions, nothing.

Pirates third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes left in the first inning after he tried to make a diving catch on Dylan Carlson’s wind-whipped pop-up double down the left-field line. Bregman and Yordan Alvarez hit back-to-back homers to begin the eighth against Ryan Tepera. David Fletcher’s RBI triple in the bottom of the inning accounted for the Angels’ only run of the game. Joe Mantiply (1-0) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth for the win. The Royals responded in the fifth when Nicky Lopez drove in Hunter Dozier with a two-out drive to left center. Michael A. Taylor led off the eighth inning with a walk and Nicky Lopez bunted Taylor to second. Ohtani made 80 pitches in 4 2/3 innings, allowing only a two-out RBI single by Alex Bregman in the third inning.

Bobby Witt Jr. delivers victory and hope for Royals (New York Post)

Bobby Witt Jr. rose to the occasion in his Major League debut, leading the Kansas City Royals to an opening day win.

The 21-year-old Witt, who received a standing ovation from the home crowd, went hitless in his first three at-bats, but came up big in his final at-bat. In his three other at-bats, Witt flew out to right field, grounded out to second and grounded out to short. Witt advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored his first career run on a single by Andrew Benintendi. His RBI and run scored would be the difference in the ballgame.

Daniel Lynch grabs fifth spot in Kansas City Royals' rotation over ... (Kansas City Star)

Kansas City manager Mike Matheny named Daniel Lynch the fifth member of the starting pitching rotation, while Brady Singer will move to the bullpen.

“(Singer) is going to be in the bullpen right now,” Matheny said. “A lot like the conversation with Jackson Kowar. We see you as starters. The Royals shuffled their pitching plans last May in order to pave the way for Lynch to break into the rotation. “I thought he did a very nice job of working on things he needed to work on to be more consistent with all four pitches. “We talk about competing in the spring training, it can’t just be lip service,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. But the Royals entered camp with as many as nine viable options for five spots.

Royals rookie Bobby Witt Jr. shines in debut, notches go-ahead ... (CBS sports.com)

The double was Witt's first career hit and RBI, and the Kauffman Stadium crowd chanted "Bobby! Bobby!" throughout the at-bat. Here's the video:.

The Royals have been an outlier in recent years because he haven't manipulated the service time of their top prospects, and Witt is no exception. Witt was selected with the No. 2 pick in the 2019 draft, making this the second time he's finished a step behind Rutschman. That's no knock on him, however, as he's a high-grade prospect in his own right. There used to be fear that Witt would swing-and-miss too frequently to maximize his loud offensive tools; those concerns haven't materialized, and he struck out in just 22.5 percent of his Triple-A plate appearances. Witt, 21, was the No. 2 pick in the 2019 draft. Our R.J. Anderson ranked Bobby Jr. the No. 2 prospect in baseball last month. He not only make contact with a pitch that was almost literally at eye level, he was able to drive it to the pull field for extra bases.

'Unbelievable' debut for Bobby Witt Jr., who knocks in Kansas City ... (Kansas City Star)

Bobby Witt Jr. recorded his first major league hit, RBI and run as Kansas City beat Cleveland 3-1 at Kauffman Stadium. Witt's double put KC ahead for good.

What a display of pitching for him to give us a chance to band it over to the bullpen to do a phenomenal job. Three of the bullpen’s mainstays from a season ago — Brent, Barlow and Josh Staumont (1/3 inning) tossed scoreless outings to help secure the victory. Not consistently at the major-league level yet, but you’ve seen enough of it to know. Nicky Lopez, who drove in the Royals’ first run with an RBI double, executed a sacrifice bunt to move Taylor into scoring position with one out for the top of the order: Whit Merrifield followed by Witt. Three guys carrying a whole lot of weight there to finish it off.” “The weather was kind of tough, but the fans were still out there cheering,” Witt said. That’s what I always kind of preach, and that’s what I wanted to do. Left-hander Jake Brentz walked a batter to load the bases, but got an inning-ending strikeout. Following a wild pitch that put Witt on third, Benintendi’s single made it 3-1. “But I just wanted to help the team in any way I could. Like this is how this is supposed to go. The future face of the Kansas City Royals franchise came to the plate with a chance to change the game in the eighth inning.

KC Royals players gave Bobby Witt Jr. a special celebration — with ... (Kansas City Star)

Bobby Witt Jr. had the game-winning hit, a double, in Kansas City's 3-1 win vs. Cleveland at Kauffman Stadium in the 2022 MLB season opener.

Zack Greinke returned to a Royals uniform, the Opening Day starting pitcher, and reminded Kansas City of his artistry. And Witt stole the show. For weeks now, the Royals have been sure Witt would make the Opening Day roster, waiting to publicize it as they strategize how to coach the person as much as the player. Because the hype is more likely to escalate than evaporate. The Royals aren’t ignoring any of that. There’s a purpose to the ritual, beyond a few veterans’ enjoyment. Two hitters later, catcher Salvador Perez walked to the plate to a mild applause. “Might’ve been the guy who was hitting second.” Yes, the Salvador Perez that tied for the major-league lead with 48 home runs a year ago. On Thursday, the crowd supplied Witt a standing ovation as he was announced for his first at-bat, hitting No. 2 in the lineup — which he concluded with a flyout to right field. And so when he arrived in the clubhouse, his teammates were waiting. The 21-year-old man whose teammates and manager still call a kid walked down the dugout steps at Kauffman Stadium, drenched in the water from a cooler.
