In what was perhaps a bad omen for 2022, Hayes left in the first inning of Monday’s opener against the Cardinals at St. Louis when he landed on his left wrist. He is unlikely to ever embarrass the organization. Hayes made his major league debut on Sept. 1, 2020 and proceeded to have a great first month. The contract runs through 2029 and includes a club option for 2030. And the Pirates haven’t exactly lavished money on players during the PNC Park era. Amazingly, that record is finally on the verge of being broken.

By: KDKA-TV News Staff. PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Ke'Bryan Hayes left Thursday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals due to an apparent injury.
The Pirates and Hayes are reportedly working toward a long-term contract extension. Hayes, who missed two months of last season with a wrist injury, was taken off the field after trying to catch a popup in left field at Busch Stadium. The Pittsburgh Pirates’ third baseman was removed from the game in the bottom of the first inning on Opening Day with a spasm of the left forearm, the team announced.
Thursday afternoon the Pittsburgh Pirates kicked off their 2022 season with plenty going wrong in a loss against the St. Louis Cardinals.
While things came unglued for the Pirates in the bottom of the 8th inning, if not for O’Neill’s blast it may have been a 1-0 or 2-0 game entering that 8th inning. Heath Hembree then got out of the 6th inning but not before allowing the inherited runner to score. In the bottom of the 2nd inning he nearly wiggled off the hook as well. In addition to Hayes exiting the game, the bottom half of the 1st inning also saw the Red Birds strike first. We already covered how the run he allowed in the 1st inning was not completely his doing. The Pittsburgh Pirates suffered a 9-0 loss against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium to kick off their 2022 season.

Unfortunately for the Pirates, it was strictly a down day. “The walks don’t sit well with me,” Brubaker said. “He changes speeds, gets you off the fastball or gets you in between on a lot of different pitches. Brubaker also walked three in three innings of work, which certainly wasn’t the opening day start he wanted. “Everything happens for a reason,” Hayes said. He throws ‘em all in a lot of different counts. I just have to be ready for Saturday.” Hayes described the issue as a cramp and insisted it’s unrelated to the injury that bothered him last season. “I knew it wasn’t an injury,” Hayes told the Post-Gazette. “I knew it was a cramp. Wainwright now has 22 career wins against the Pirates, most among active pitchers. I was trying my best to get that thing to loosen back up. I was trying my best.

For Pittsburgh, J.T. Brubaker struggled, to put it lightly, in his first outing of the season, allowing four runs on four hits in just three innings of work. After an off day tomorrow, the Pirates return to Busch Stadium on Saturday to take on the Cardinals at 2:15 p.m. Meanwhile, veteran Adam Wainwright extended his scoreless streak against the Pirates to 32 innings after six innings of work.
