At Masters, Tiger Woods Shows Flashes of Greatness and Signs of ... (The New York Times)

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The sun emerged through a narrow opening in a cloud-filled sky as Tiger Woods approached the first tee on Thursday at the Masters Tournament.

“We’ve got a long way to go,” he said of the tournament. A round in the 60s was not out of the question, but Woods managed only a routine par on the 17th hole. But the round finished with a flourish as he recovered to sink an 8-foot putt and secure an under-par round. His putter, however, could not save him, and he fell back to even par for the day with a bogey. On the ninth hole, he yanked his drive into the trees left of the fairway before leaving another approach short, though he again saved par with a clutch putt. Leaving the sixth green, Woods shrugged his shoulders impishly and covered his mouth to — barely — conceal a grin. But, beginning with the seventh hole, recurring errors had Woods scrambling to keep up with the leaders. On the ninth hole, as Woods left the tee, he noticeably winced as his right leg appeared to land awkwardly. A few long seconds later, it dropped onto the green and came to a quick stop roughly 18 inches from the hole for an easy birdie. After a mediocre pitch onto the green, Woods faced the kind of putt no golfer appreciates on the first green — a slippery, breaking 12-footer. “I’m right where I need to be,” Woods, who was tied for 10th, said of his position (Sungjae Im led the field on Thursday with a five-under 67). Of the thousands of fans who flocked to every hole he played, he said: “The place was electric. He rarely, for example, squatted behind his golf ball as he once did to read putts close to the level of the playing surface.

Masters 2022: Our favorite looks from Augusta so far (GolfDigest.com)

From Tiger's hot pink shirt to Will Zalatoris's tortoiseshell shoes, here are the outfits we're loving from the Masters so far.

The thick vertical stripes give off a laid-back hipster feel, but the crisp white pants and hat keep the outfit classy. It turns out that the hot pink theme of day one at the Masters went beyond Nike apparel. Four-hundred and eight days following Woods’ near-deadly car accident, the shirt screams “I’m back.” Although the mock neck isn’t available for purchase at the moment, Nike golf offers other styles of shirts in the same azalea pink colorway that are worth checking out. Here are some of our favorite looks from the Masters so far. Any outfit that Tiger Woods wears will cause a stir, let alone a hot pink patterned mock neck shirt. Best, worst and what's next for Tiger Woods at the 2022 Masters (ESPN)

Tiger Woods had a lot of good moments, a few ones he'd like to forget and a lot of work ahead at the 86th Masters.

Despite the mistakes off the tee and around the green, Woods finds himself in contention at the Masters again. Woods' putt seemed to be on line the entire way, breaking from right to left to the hole. "Lack of concentration on the first one; second one, lack of commitment. He made a 10-footer to save par on the first hole and an 8-footer to save par on the ninth. On the next hole, his shot from 45 yards was 17 feet short. On the first hole, his wedge from 30 yards was 10 feet short. But Woods' first chip was short of the green and his second one ended up 9 feet above the hole. "I'll start with the disappointment: Just making bogey from 50 yards on the eighth," Woods said. He hit a 280-yard drive down the middle and then a nice 230-yard shot with a fairway wood, leaving him about 50 yards short of the pin. It was his 17th birdie on the sixth hole, most of any player at the Masters since 1996. The ball landed on the green, bounced once up the hill and stopped two feet short of the hole. "I know where to hit it [to] a lot of these pins, and I miss in the correct spots and give myself good angles," Woods said.

Tiger Woods crouches to read a putt on the 18th hole in the first round of. Watching this Tiger Woods prepare for his shots was at times difficult. But almost ...

One is that he can summon more rounds like Thursday’s. The other is that even if he doesn’t, he can still find joy in the game and share it with others. That is the difference between a future World Golf Hall of Famer and Tiger Woods. He kept crediting his team, and for once, a golfer talking about his “team” did not sound ridiculous. If he does make the cut, will making the next cut be a win? He said he felt “as sore as I expected to feel.” He also said he “had a terrible warmup session. The walking's not easy … my leg, it's going to be difficult for the rest of my life. Woods said this week that he expects the pain to go down over time, but his mobility will probably not improve. That's just the way it is, but I'm able to do it. I hit it awful.” But as soon as he put a tee in the ground on No. 1, he was Tiger Woods and this was Augusta National and nothing else mattered. If he can’t practice nearly as much as elite golfers, and he can’t compete as often as elite golfers, and every walk from tee to green brings considerable pain, can he really win again? That's just the way it is … and this is only one round. “If you would have seen how my leg looked to where it's at now, the pictures — some of the guys know,” he said.

2022 Masters: Tiger Woods' unforgettable 71 in return to golf even ... (CBSSports.com)

Tiger clawed his way out of hospital bed and into early contention at Augusta National.

That's something I'm very lucky to have this opportunity to be able to play, and not only that, to play in the Masters and to have this type of reception. They've seen the pictures, and they've come over to the house and they've seen it," said Woods after his round. In showing up, he overcame a lot, but in doing so, he also chose the more difficult route. One straightforward par and one miraculous save later, and Woods pulled off a 71 that won't receive second glances in his eventual annals but still left your jaw on the floor if you witnessed it as it happened. His desire to perform and compete is double that of men half his age who haven't accomplished 10% as much. On the par-3 16th, he hit a handsome shot to the back right shelf that was better than it probably looked on ShotLink. As he strode to the 16th green, the patrons lining that hole stood one after the next -- as if doing the wave from tee to green -- to applaud him. He can make the cut and work his way into contention at this tournament. Three more pars to start that side before an easy birdie at No. 13 and a bogey on No. 14 that came as a result of a pulled drive. Not for the shot he had just hit but because they knew how preposterous it was that he was hitting shots at all just over a year removed from a hospital bed. After five consecutive pars to start his round, Tiger nearly stared an ace into the hole at No. 6 and moved to red numbers for the first time in in 100 weeks. On paper, it's a fine score at a great tournament that could lead to something even better later in the week. He went out and shot a 1-under 71 to beat the field average by three, of course.

Sungjae Im Leads After a Day Unlike Any Other at the Masters (Sports Illustrated)

You might have heard that Tiger Woods played on Thursday. But there were stories all over a leaderboard that is just getting started at Augusta.

“It’s one thing to just hold a club and make air swings, it’s another to hit a golf ball into a net,” Higgs said. It’s impossible for the players and impossible for the patrons who walk around every day. “It was a really enjoyable round. He is 23, he’s won twice on the PGA Tour, including a victory this year at Riviera Country Club in the Genesis Invitational, and he’s had a few near-misses, including two playoff losses. A bogey at 18 left him at 69, right in the mix. Niemann had the shot of the day in the Woods-Niemann-Louis Oosthuizen group. He headed to the practice range after the round to work out the kinks in his driver swing for Friday, when the weather forecast calls for cooler temperatures and stronger, gustier winds. Dustin Johnson won that tournament and yes, he was in the mix again, too. “To have the patrons fully out and to have that type of energy out there was awesome to feel. “The place was electric,” Woods said. That came after a fast start when he birdied the first three holes. Honk if you liked the show: Woods shot 1-under 71, starting the day with a clutch 10-foot par-saving putt and ending the round with a five-footer for par.

Masters 2022: 5 intriguing stats from Thursday's first round (GolfDigest.com)

On a wild first day at the 2022 Masters there was no shortage of interesting facts and figures.

For a man who once famously said Augusta National was a par 67 for him, it’s kind of difficult to get to that number with a double box on the card. Nine times in the history of the Masters a player has finished runner-up and won the green jacket the following year. Cameron Smith had quite the day, opening and closing with a double bogey and still shooting 68 to reside in second place.

Scoring average: I was shocked at how difficult this course was playing after how much rain has dumped in Augusta over the last few days. It's impossible for the players, and I think it's impossible for the 25,000 patrons who come and walk round here every day. Willett has zero top 20s in his last 12 starts worldwide, but he was still fired up to come back to the site of his greatest victory. From a course playing tougher than it appears to a leaderboard that already looks like the weekend to Tiger Woods' extraordinary 71 in his first professional round in 17 months, Thursday at Augusta National had it all.

2022 Masters Day 2 Preview: Tiger Woods Isn't Going Anywhere ... (Sports Illustrated)

Tigermania continues on Friday but this leaderboard has an insanely similar look to the November 2020 edition.

Despite a slew of Masters top-10’s over the years, McIlroy has played his way into contention on just one Sunday since he took the lead into the final round in 2011. you guessed, it Dustin Johnson. The conditions this week have mimicked that November affair to an extent with plenty of wind and moisture, which has left Augusta to play long and soft. DJ is contending once again after an opening-round 69 and the leaderboard as a whole looks eerily similar to that November edition. Deep in the gallery along the 1st tee on Thursday, one patron whispered, “This should be interesting” as Woods prepared to strike his first tee shot. Woods's test of endurance begins now, and with every good score comes a later tee time and more time to recover. Because Woods is very much in contention after an opening 71, the stage is set for Friday to be equally electric.

Tiger Woods talked about winning this Masters. He's walking the walk. (The Washington Post)

The five-time champion is in the mix after the first round of a Masters tournament in which few thought he could even play, much less be in contention.

There was that edge to that answer, the edge that provided the reason to show up here. He didn’t even have to be in view for that to be the case. Afterward, Woods emerged from the clubhouse to address a gaggle of reporters. It ended up at the back of the green. He used his mind to recover from near-jail situations at the seventh and the 18th — pars from the pinestraw that combined creativity with calculus. But he also delivered the golf. There are no limits to what can be cheered when it comes to Woods at Augusta. There’s the normal stuff, as when he stuck his tee shot at the par-3 sixth to two feet. He shot a 74. Which describes the Masters when he’s a factor: fantastic. When Woods was asked whether there was victory merely in doing what he did Thursday — shooting a steady, 1-under par 71 on a rebuilt right leg that now houses enough hardware to fill an aisle at Home Depot — his answer was swift: “Yes.” They’ve seen the pictures, and they’ve come over the house. The first version Woods has played before, and at 46, he’s here for it again, with the requisite juices flowing.

Masters Day 1: Tiger Woods returned, and order was restored (USA TODAY)

Of all the 6576 shots that were officially struck at Augusta National on Day 1 of the Masters, only one truly mattered.

On Wednesday, Woods — who said the previous day that he intended to play — went through his final practice round and decided there was no need to back out. He kept spraying tee shots off to the left. The word “roar” might get overused at Augusta National, but that’s what the sound from those patrons sure seemed like. Sungjae Im was the first round leader, shooting a 5-under 67. It’s going to get harder. With his opening tee shot at 11:04 a.m. Thursday, the Masters was truly back to normal. Yet Woods answered the bell and then some Thursday, probably surprising some by playing at all, surprising even more by looking like someone who could contend. Woods was there as well, after being unable to attend last year while recovering from his injuries. He is the best competitor I’ve ever witnessed.” It wasn’t down the center of the fairway. They watched a man who could have lost a leg — or his life — in a car crash 15 months ago return to the spot of his past glory, and albeit moving perhaps a bit more slowly than he used to, chase glory again. It didn’t go in the hole.

7:40 a.m.: It is a chilly morning in Augusta. Two-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Stewart Hagestad and 1988 Masters champion Sandy Lyle start things up at 8 a.m., and it was frigid for their warm-ups on the range. And the scoring average was 73.83 on Day 1, plenty tough for Thursday. 8:47 a.m.: We are now almost an hour into play, and we're still waiting for a birdie in the second round. That's how you score well at Augusta National, and the Canadian—with two top 10s the past few years—is keeping up his great play so far. Here are the pin positions for Friday's second round. 9:49 a.m.: Our Day 1 leader has dropped a shot early on Friday. Sungjae Im moves back to 4-under with an unforced error at the opening hole. Christiaan Bezuidenhout bogeyed No. 1 but then birdied the second hole to put a red number on the board ... about an hour into the morning tee times. Just ahead of him at the par-5 second, Harold Varner III makes birdie to get to two under. That would include Tiger Woods, who did not disappoint on Thursday. As he often does at Augusta National, he captivated the patrons at Augusta National with a gritty 1-under 71 to put him just four back of Sungjae Im’s lead. Still, he's in red figures at one under, just four off the lead. That’s why Friday is so essential—make the cut (top 50 and ties) and you’ll very well have a chance with this possible weather. Back at No. 1, Dustin Johnson gets his second round underway with a par.
