Despite their tough seasons, the Guardians and Royals each featured a player in the top seven of American League MVP voting. Cleveland went 80-82 last season, going 40-41 both on the road at home. He threw 72 pitches, which could be the norm for Guardians starting pitchers the first time through the rotation as pitchers continue to build toward their normal workloads. The Guardians brought the potential go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth after Steven Kwan, who also had two walks, singled to right field for his first career hit in the major leagues.

The top 5 things you need to know for Cleveland Guardians ... (Akron Beacon Journal)

A primer to get you caught up for Cleveland Guardians Opening Day 2022, with notes on the CBA, the roster, Terry Francona and the division.

In the short run, they'll have to exceed some outside expectations and hope some of their young talent can ascend sooner rather than later. In that way, Francona felt he owed it to the team to step away and get himself in better health before returning. The Twins have been aggressive lately, adding star shortstop Carlos Correa and starting pitchers Sonny Gray and Dylan Bundy to their rotation, among other additions. And pitchers swinging the bat is a thing of a past. How Francona handles the pitching staff early in the season will look a bit different than normal, as starters aren't built up to their normal workloads yet. Considering the Guardians are a young team hoping to beat expectations and climb into the postseason race, the extra wild-card spot could be key. MLB and the MLB Players Association came to an agreement for a five-year deal. "... I don’t know if it’s because you get selective hearing and you hear what you wanna hear, but still, towards the end of the day, I get pretty stiff. Teams will be able to carry 28-player rosters through May 1, a result of the shortened spring. "You don't know what Steven Kwan’s going to grow into, what Andres Gimenez is going to grow into, Owen [Miller], the whole group. The 2021 starting rotation ended up being a complete disaster. It more than doubles the largest contract ever given out in team history.

Cleveland Guardians fall to Kansas City Royals, 3-1, in chilly season ... (cleveland.com)

Kansas City stages two-out rally in the eighth inning thanks to top prospect Bobby Witt Jr.

Straw, who reached base three times and scored Cleveland’s only run, took a called third strike with runners on the corners in the ninth to end the game. It’s something everybody has to deal with, but it wasn’t too bad on the mound.” Rosario stayed with the ball, but didn’t put leather on it as it fell to the turf for a double. But the miserable weather and short spring training have to be taken into account. Singles by Rosario and Reyes ended the day for Greinke. Lefty Jake Brentz relieved and walked pinch-hitter Owen Miller to load the bases. “It was a tough play,” said Straw. “It got in the gap pretty good. Ramirez followed with double to left center on a 3-2 pitch. He stole second, but had to hold his ground when Lopez robbed Rosario of a hit with a diving catch at second base. On Lopez’s double, Straw said he pulled up as he raced for the ball in left center. Shaw relieved to strike out Merrifield and end the inning. McKenzie (0-1), pitching on a cold and windy day at Kauffman Stadium, started the eighth by walking Michael A. Taylor. Nicky Lopez bunted him to second, but McKenzie struck out Whit Merrifield for the second out. Amed Rosario, the shortstop playing left field, drew a bead on the ball, but the strong wind blowing from left to right pushed the ball into the gap.

He has average to above average speed that shows up on the field that allows him to show great range in getting to balls. He most likely ends up in Columbus by the end of the season with an outside shot at making his MLB debut. He was on a quick path to a possible promotion to Triple-A Columbus when he suffered a slightly torn left labrum in his left shoulder while swinging during an at bat in June. The injury needed surgery and ended his 2021 campaign. He possesses terrific overall instincts that allow him to play above his physical ability on the bases and in the field. He has been assigned to High-A Lake County to start the 2022 season where he finished at last year. He has a chance to make his MLB debut this season, but it will depend on his current health what adjustments he continues to make at the plate and overall need of the big-league club. The only blemish to Noel's season was he missed multiple games with injuries to his ankle and left hand. He has shown to have one of the most patient approaches at the plate in all of minor league baseball. Jones possesses average to below average speed but has looked competent enough at the position that he should be an average defender.

Guardians trade Bradley Zimmer to Toronto for reliever Anthony Castro (Let's Go Tribe)

The Cleveland Guardians announced that they've traded Bradley Zimmer to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for pitcher Anthony Castro.

Castro hasn’t pitched enough in the majors to have a full picture of his arsenal through Statcast, but in 2021 his four-seam fastball ranked in the 93rd percentile for spin rate, something the Guardians covet highly. Last year was his best in Cleveland as he finished with an 89 wRC+ in 99 games and tied his career-high with eight home runs. Zimmer concludes his Guardians career with a .225/.310/.347 slash and 19 home runs in 263 games. The Guardians received 26-year-old right-handed reliever Anthony Castro in return for Zimmer. Castro has 25.2 major-league innings under his belt with a 5.26 ERA and 22% strikeout-to-walk ratio. Maybe the new org will be able to tweak things, but Detroit is actually pretty good at pitch design and they could not. The move comes mere hours after Cleveland dropped their season opener to the Royals. A game in which rookie outfielder Steven Kwan drew a pair of walks, recorded a hit, and just generally looked like a major-leaguer.

He made his big league debut with the Tigers in 2021, pitching one game for Detroit. Castro, 26, opened this season with Class AAA Buffalo, Toronto’s top farm club.

Major Takeaways From Cleveland's Season-Opening Loss To ... (Sports Illustrated)

Noteworthy observations from the Cleveland Guardians Opening Day loss against the Kansas City Royals starts with an MLB debut and ends with roster construction ...

Rosario provided a nice offensive punch last summer and ended up leading the team in hits on the year. The Royals found themselves on the board in the fifth when a ball was hit to Rosario and he couldn’t quite make the catch. Bobby Bradley earned the starting first base job coming out of camp, but the play on both ends left much to be desired. Straw had two hits and a walk on the day along with a stolen base — putting him in scoring position for the Guardians only run. The 24-year-old went 1-for-2 with two walks on the day in the seventh slot of the lineup. Steven Kwan made his MLB debut for the Guardians as the starting right fielder.

Can The Cleveland Guardians Muster More Offense Than The ... (Forbes)

Last year, in addition to getting no-hit twice in the span of 16 days, Cleveland Indians hitters were held to one or no runs in 22 games.

But neither deal addresses the Guardians’ biggest need, which was on display again in the season-opening loss to Kansas City – a lack of hitting. Zimmer was Cleveland’s first-round pick in the 2014 draft, but was never able to get his career off the ground. Opposing hitters batted .209 against him, and he held left-handed hitters to a .179 average. Ramirez wasn’t the only Guardians player to get a contract extension as the season began. The only newcomer was rookie right fielder Steven Kwan, who in Thursday’s loss had two walks and a single in his four plate appearances. The Guardians debuted with a quiet 3-1 loss to the Royals.

Ball once again finds Guardians' Amed Rosario at the wrong time ... (cleveland.com)

Shane Bieber says you can't dwell on one play following season-opening loss to Royals.

Rosario got under the ball, but the wind pushed it toward the gap and it fell to the ground in front of him for a double. In the spring of 2021, the Indians decided to try newly acquired shortstop Amed Rosario in center field. He handled the first two fly balls to come his way -- a line drive by Michael A. Taylor and a fly ball by Andrew Benintendi -- with no problem. Rosario eventually moved back to shortstop and turned in a solid season. One or two just happened to fall. Rosario got through the spring without incident, but in his big-league debut on Thursday, 30 to 40 mph winds, mixed with sleet and rain, awaited him in a season-opening 3-1 loss to the Royals.

Former Detroit Tigers relief pitcher traded to Cleveland Guardians ... (mlive.com)

Anthony Castro was an international free agent signing by the Tigers in 2011 and spent nine seasons with the organization.

Castro made his organizational debut with the Tigers in 2017 as a member of the West Michigan Whitecaps and posted a 10-6 record with a 2.49 ERA as a starter. He garnered interest as a prospect following the 2019 season, as he allowed a career-low .207 batting average at the AA level and quickly became a Top 20 prospect in the Tigers organization. He was claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays on Dec. 7, 2020, and was designated for assignment by the organization on January 27 of 2021. In 25 games with the Blue Jays last season, Castro posted a 4.74 ERA with 32 strikeouts and eight walks in 24 and two-thirds innings of work. The 26-year-old began the season with AAA Buffalo, Toronto’s top farm club, where he registered a 1.80 ERA in 10 relief appearances with a 1-2 overall record and one recorded save. His career took off in 2018 as a member of the Lakeland Flying Tigers when he went 9-4 overall with an ERA of 2.93 and a career-high 101 strikeouts.

From Logan Allen to Bradley Zimmer, a look at the Cleveland ... (Akron Beacon Journal)

Manager Terry Francona will see a lot of young players on his Cleveland Guardians roster when they open the MLB season Thursday at Kansas City.

He was acquired last season from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for second baseman Cesar Hernandez. He'll likely be optioned to Triple-A on May 1, but in the meantime will get a taste of the major leagues. There is plenty of potential but it will need to be put together for the duration of a long season. Bryan Shaw returned to the Guardians after a resurgent season in 2021 that got his career back on track. Nick Sandlin will get plenty of high-leverage work as well after posting a 2.94 ERA in 33⅔ innings as a rookie last season. Logan Allen has put it all together for a start or two but hasn't yet found consistent success at the major-league level. He missed significant time after injuring himself while taking off his shirt following a tough outing and finished with a 4.67 ERA in 142⅔ innings. Rosario had a torrid finish to 2021, when he hit .309 with a .796 OPS in the second half of the season. Bieber is a year removed from his stellar 2020 season, when he posted a 1.63 ERA and took home the American League Cy Young award. The starting rotation is finally healthy and will be looking to show what it can do as a group. The Guardians hop Myles Straw is their answer to a center field dilemma that has plagued them for years. Gimenez opened 2021 as a starter but struggled and was optioned to Triple-A to work out some swing issues. If he shifts to the outfield, Andres Gimenez can slide over, opening up second base for Yu Chang and Miller, with Ernie Clement also receiving occasional at-bats as a utility infielder.
