Democrats needed this advice from Barack Obama (The Washington Post)

That’s the burden of being the adults in the room and the only party that defends functional government and democracy. That’s not about the midterms; that’s about why you’re in government and making government work for people ... even when everybody says it’s not possible.” It was not the end of the world; indeed, the country gained something. We can only hope Obama stiffened the Democrats’ spines and hardened their resolve. In the presence of his former boss, President Biden seemed energized. He reminded the audience that Republicans still want to take away the ACA and painted a bright distinction between the parties. Why do Republicans come to D.C. if it means running from reporters asking questions about the Jan. 6 insurrection, coming up with bogus reasons to oppose a historic Supreme Court nominee or flattering a delusional narcissist bent on damaging democracy? “We’re not supposed to do this just to occupy a seat or to hang on to power," he said. Perhaps it was fond remembrance of a president who was both sane and charismatic. Which, for a while, it looked like it might.” But that is morally incontrovertible. Democrats did not decide then that it couldn’t be passed because it didn’t have bipartisan support. Destruction and chaos might generate temporary fervor among voters, but it’s building something sustainable that defines a politician.

Putin, he said, "represented a very particular reaction to the ideals of democracy but also globalization, the collision of cultures, the ability to harness anger and resentment around an ethnonationalist mythology. I think that it is calling into question a set of trends around the world that we have seen building for some time." Obama added: "It is a tragedy of historic proportions.

“I don’t know that the person I knew is the same as the person who is now leading this charge,” Obama said of Putin. “He was always ruthless. Obama announced on Twitter on March 13 that he had tested positive for COVID-19, while also urging Americans to get vaccinated. He is scheduled to give a keynote address on disinformation on April 21 at Stanford University. But he appears to be slowly reemerging in public life as Democrats need his help during a crucial midterm election year. “They seem to know what it is. “And there are ways in which a democracy can rightly expect them to show us … to show us in the same way than any other product.”

Obama hasn’t been entirely silent; he stumped in Virginia for Terry McAuliffe and spoke to House Democrats, for example. “These partisan attempts at voter nullification are unlike anything we’ve seen in modern times, and they represent a profound threat to the basic democratic principle that all votes should be counted fairly and objectively,” Obama himself wrote earlier this year in USA Today, concluding that “America’s long-standing grand experiment in democracy is being sorely tested.” The White House arranged for Biden to sign an executive order, but even there Biden played second fiddle to “the president,” as he still calls Obama. “One thing I haven’t gotten down: Barack Obama could sign his name using nine different pens,” Biden marveled. “That was a joke,” Obama felt the need to add. Republicans are now taking aim at democracy itself, rejecting the results of an election, condoning a violent insurrection in the Capitol (“legitimate political discourse”) and rolling back voting rights. Obama has been living his best life, even making a podcast and writing a book with Bruce Springsteen. “I’m a private citizen now,” he reminded the gathering, packed with staffers and legislators who served during his presidency.

But he denied it was misinformation, saying that under Obamacare, “systemically we are not forcing you out of existing employer-based health care.” “And when we don’t get it right or look like we don’t care about it, others fill that gap.” “We have gotten complacent and I think I cannot guarantee that as a consequence of what’s happened, we are shaking off that complacency.” A day earlier, Obama made his first visit to the White House since Republican Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration in 2017. “If that’s true in our society, imagine how any of us would process information if we are not getting, seeing, anything else?” Obama asked rhetorically. “What we’re seeing is the consequences of that kind of toxic mix in the hands of an autocratic government that doesn’t have a lot of checks and balances,” he said.

Barack Obama's humiliation of feeble ol' Joe Biden (New York Post)

What does that make Obama? Well, he mentioned himself 33 times during his speech, according to Steve Guest, communications adviser for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).

He swivels around to face Biden, and the hand finally lets go. His head turns and there, a few feet away, he sees Obama holding court, before eager acolytes. He swings and dips and leans forward but the bony, white hand clings on. One thing is now clear: The VP is not a team player. He lets go of the blond woman’s hand with a smile and leans away to shake off the hand now firmly attached to his shoulder. He raises his right hand high in the air and then dips it down into the crowd to shake another hand. He and the blond woman start bantering. Obama’s escape is foiled by a short, blond woman who lunges in to shake his hand. You can tell Obama feels it, because he involuntarily jerks his head away, a micro-expression of what looks like disgust flitting across his face. Obama, by way of greeting Harris, tosses his head like a horse and she responds by hunching her shoulders like an excited kid. The president just looked feeble and unpopular against his limelight-hogging former boss. He spots Obama and a frown furrows his brow.

As a result, Mr. Obama said he might have a harder time connecting to people in such areas if he were campaigning today. Mr. Obama said the result was that both partisan commentators and mainstream reporters said: "Look! He lied! For one example, Mr. Obama addressed how he himself was accused of lying in comments during the runup to the passage of the Affordable Care Act in which he said, "If you want to keep your doctor, you can."

On the Late Show, Stephen Colbert also commented on Obama’s first visit to the White House in five years. Late-night hosts enjoyed Barack Obama’s return to the White House on Tuesday, his first visit since the grim January morning in 2017 when he departed it with the newly elected Donald Trump. “That’s really gotta bother Trump,” Jimmy Kimmel said of the visit. In other news, conservatives have called for Elon Musk, who bought 9.2% of Twitter for $2.9bn this week and joined its board of directors, to reinstate Donald Trump’s account.
