Tiger Woods Misses Fairway, Saves Par as Fans Swarm Opening ... (Sports Illustrated)

Patrons we packed a dozen deep around the first hole. Tiger Woods missed the fairway with his drive but still made par to start his Masters.

His pitch shot skipped a couple of times and wound up 10 feet short of the hole. Walking up the fairway, Woods showed slight signs of a gait that is not quite normal. It was a good break, as that fairway bunker is a tough place to play from.

A slow start in the first round at Augusta National brought the Californian to a full boil.

However, after breaking his club on the 4th hole Thursday, he saved par from the bunker. The former Oklahoma State star got off to a double bogey-bogey-bogey start. Then after his tee shot at the par-3 4th came up short in the bunker, he took out his frustration on his iron.

2022 Masters predictions, favorites: Ranking the entire field from 1 ... (CBSSports.com)

Augusta National has reached a fever pitch ahead of the 2022 Masters as anticipation has grown throughout the world for the year's first major tournament.

77. Guido Migliozzi (first appearance): After grinning his way to a T4 at the U.S. Open at Torrey last year, he's made just one cut in 2022, and it was a T67 at the Ras al Khaimah Championship. He's somehow lost strokes in every statistical category in every tournament except for the three events in which he narrowly gained strokes off the tee. 74. Takumi Kanaya (T58 in 2019): Kanaya is coming off a good showing at the match play in Austin, but broadly speaking, he's not a great iron player, which seems problematic in a week like this one. 67. Charl Schwartzel (Won in 2011): Schwartzel has had a completely bizarre record at Augusta since winning maybe the wildest Masters of all time in 2011. He's been playing solid golf of late, and he gets the lefty advantage at Augusta. I'm in on him to finish in the top 25 or so. 46. Bubba Watson (Won in 2012, 2014): This tournament marks the 10-year anniversary of his famous hooking shot out of the woods on the 10th hole. 45. Kevin Kisner (T21 in 2019): He's been playing such tremendous golf, but this is not a course that necessarily sets up that well for him, and his history here (two straight missed cuts and no top-20 finishes) shows it. 22. Marc Leishman (T4 in 2013): I imagine he's been running Leishman National pretty fast on the stimpmeter for a few weeks now to help him prepare for this year's event. 11. Viktor Hovland (T21 in 2021): He would be in the top five if his short game was in order. 10. Jordan Spieth (Won in 2015): In the 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2021 Masters, Spieth beat or tied 447 of 453 competitors (98.7%). He somehow has one green jacket. 6. Scottie Scheffler (T18 in 2021): It feels foolish to have the No. 1 player in the world this low, but Scheffler is not your normal No. 1 player in the world. 8. Dustin Johnson (Won in 2020): Over his last 50 rounds following the WGC-Dell Match Play, D.J.'s strokes gained tee to green numbers were below Adam Hadwin, C.T. Pan and Martin Laird. He played well at Austin Country Club, but a lot of that was due to a putter that's been smoking for a while now. Dumping his tee shot into the water on No. 16 last year as soon as he got within striking distance of Hideki Matsuyama was not encouraging, but it also seems statistically impossible to get into contention as much as he has (eight top-seven finishes in 18 majors) and not eventually win one.

Masters 2022: Meet the 6 amateurs competing at Augusta National (Golf.com)

Augusta will mark the first in a storybook summer for the 19-year-old, who will also be the first from his country ever to tee it up at the Open Championship at St. Andrews in July. This year will mark his second Masters start — he finished T36 in 2017, becoming the first Mid-Am entrant to make the cut at Augusta National. Jarvis, who plays collegiately for UNLV, won the Latin American Amateur Championship to earn an invite into the field at Augusta National. In doing so, he’ll be the first player from the Cayman Islands to tee it up in the event. Nakajima is something of a superstar in his native Japan, seen by many as the natural successor to Hideki Matsuyama atop the country’s golf mantel. This, of course, is thanks to its founder, Bobby Jones. Jones is the most famous amateur in golf history, a player who won seven majors without ever turning “pro.” Rather, Jones moonlighted in professional golf from his day job as an attorney. The club also hosts an annual amateur dinner on the night before the Masters begins, an idea that came at the suggestion of Jones himself.

What matters is after a patron-less Masters in the fall of 2020 and a limited gallery last spring, the first tee was surrounded once again to honor this tradition unlike any other. The men, with 11 Masters wins between them, did their duty—first Player, followed by Nicklaus and then Watson—striking their shots to begin the 2022 tournament in earnest. Other players who have been Honorary Starters include Byron Nelson, Gene Sarazen, Ken Venturi, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Nicklaus, Player and Lee Elder. Watson is the latest to join these ranks, named as an honorary starter this past January.

The Latest: Player, Nicklaus and Watson open the Masters (USA TODAY)

Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and newcomer Tom Watson have played their ceremonial tee shots and opened this year's Masters.

“I've watched this ceremony many times in the past ... and to be a part of this thing, I'm truly humbled." Forecasters say there isn't a great chance of more rain on Thursday at Augusta National, though strong wind is expected to greet the afternoon wave of players. And then the stage was set for Watson, who won the first of his two green jackets 45 years ago. Olazabal is a two-time Masters champion and is playing the tournament for the 33rd time. Player, the three-time Masters champion who has long been an advocate of physical fitness, was first to play. “Yes! It was successful," he said, drawing more laughter.

While the focus is on Woods there will be a galaxy of golfing stars for patrons to choose to follow, including betting favourite Spaniard Jon Rahm and Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy, who again will seek to complete the career Grand Slam with a Masters win. The Masters officially begins with Spain’s Jose Maria Olazabal first off at 830am ET (1230 GMT) but for most of the spectators and millions watching on television it will not start until Woods steps onto the tee. But the dreary weather could not dampen the buzz or expectations, as golf fans lucky enough to have secured one of sport’s most coveted tickets moved quickly to stake out their places around some of the sport’s most famous holes and wait for the man of the moment, Woods to appear.

The Masters is officially underway at Augusta National. That's our favorite sentence of the year, and we're more excited than ever.

8 a.m.: The ceremonial first-tee shots were pushed back about a half hour to let the remaining wet weather pass through. Last to hit is Tom Watson, joining the first-tee ceremony. 8:39 a.m.: The first group is off—and we have our first birdie. The 86th Masters Tournament is now underway! With all the rain, we suppose the committee knows it needs to challenge competitors on Thursday. We'd still expect low scores if the wind isn't too bad in the afternoon. He was making jokes, doing his signature kick, and hitting one down the fairway. And players like Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele and Will Zalatoris—who might have a sour taste in their mouths after close calls last year—are among the favorites. Jose Maria Olazabal—out there first with J.J. Spaun—holes out on the first green and gets to 1-under. That’s not even mentioning the other favorites like Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith and Dustin Johnson … etc., etc. Rory McIlroy makes his eighth attempt at completing the career Grand Slam (he’s in the 2:33 p.m. pairing with Brooks Koepka and Matt Fitzpatrick). Scottie Scheffler, the new World No. 1, looks to keep up his torrid pace—but six players have a chance to be ranked first in the world after this week.

Masters Live: Tiger Returns, Leaderboard and Analysis (The New York Times)

Just 13½ months after a car crash left Woods with leg injuries so severe that doctors considered amputation, he is scheduled to tee off on Thursday morning ...

Friday and Saturday will feature cooler and blustery weather with lows in the 40s and afternoon highs in the upper 60s Friday, while struggling to reach 60 degrees on Saturday. Sunny skies each morning will give way to mostly cloudy skies during the afternoon. And 50-1 shots do win: Mine That Bird in the 2009 Kentucky Derby for one. He has not played on the PGA Tour for 17 months, and 14 months ago he severely injured his right leg in a car crash. There is also a “Track” tab on the website to follow the tournament. The Masters Tournament app is free to download and available on Apple and Android. Fans can follow golfers and create their own personalized leaderboards of their favorite players. After a cold start Sunday morning with lows in the 30s, temperatures rebound into the lower 70s for the afternoon under sunny skies and lighter winds. Woods is down in about 20th place, giving him an equal chance of winning as, say, the likes of Matthew Fitzpatrick and Corey Conners. If one of them wins instead, expect smaller headlines. He is 46, and age eventually limits even the greatest athletes. It allows fans to see all the shots by their favorite players through a player’s profile or through the “My Group” function. At the same time, plenty of golfers are much, much bigger prices than 50-1. “The pain is there, but he’s dealt with that before,” Couples said. Today, he and Justin were pretty serious.
