Champions League predictions, odds: Manchester City vs. Atletico ... (CBSSports.com)

The Reds face Benfica in their opener while City host Atletico Madrid. On Wednesday, it will be Chelsea hosting Real Madrid in a rematch of last season's ...

Man of the Match pick: Robert Lewandowski. His European record is just unbelievable. While it will be a tight affair, Benzema will pull Real Madrid across the line in victory. While I see Chelsea scoring in the match, he'll keep Real in a match that they likely shouldn't walk away with a victory from. Benzema also has a chance at the golden boot if Real Madrid are to advance in the competition sitting on eight goals in the competition. Most likely to score a goal: Karim Benzema. Although it's an away match, I find it hard to bet against Benzema performing on the big stage, especially after his hat trick with everything on the line against a star-studded PSG side. It's hard to look at this matchup and come away with the expectation that anyone will have a larger say in how things will go than Benzema. With eight goals already in Champions League play, Benzema has been instrumental in Real's performance. Heavy City possession leads to a ton of chances, but a lone goal is enough as they combat Atleti's pressure with crisp passing. If they can keep the ball on the ground and be smart in their distribution, they can limit the chances and get a key clean sheet. The Uruguayan is a tank at the back, but he will have to be super cautious when going up against a tricky and speedy Foden, knowing that one wrong challenge can dig a huge hole. Man of the Match pick: Thiago Alcantara has the technical ability to dominate and dictate this sort of contest and he will be one of the main dangers Benfica seek to neutralize. Given that the Egyptian is under a little scrutiny of late, this could be the sort of game where he makes the difference as a reminder of his quality. Adding to the stakes is the fact that Otamendi is a booking away from second-leg suspension so will be walking a tightrope from the off.

50 minutes to kickoff: As is often the case with a Guardiola XI, who plays where is the big question. 1 hour 40 mins to kickoff: It's that time of year again where all eyes will be on whether Pep Guardiola has a tactical brainwave for a major Champions League game. Some of the scrutiny around Guardiola's tactical calls is a little imbalanced. Paramount+ will also stream the match. 1 hour to kickoff: So, are those "stupid tactics" to quote the man himself? The teams are going through their warm-ups amid a steady stream of Manchester drizzle. 5 minutes to kickoff: The atmosphere in here is ramping up nicely as kick-off approaches. The teamsheets are under half an hour away... As Guardiola would say - and this was kind of his very sarcastic point yesterday - we'll only really know once we see how it all shakes out. You know exactly what you’re going to get from Atletico and Simeone’s players are rigorously familiar with what their coach requires. 2nd minute - City have lined up with Cancelo at right-back, Ake and left-back and Stones and Laporte at centre-back. It was 3-2 midway through the first half, which sounds great but my fingers might fall off if anything like that goes down again.

Follow all the action as Pep Guardiola's side host Diego Simeone's LaLiga champions in the last eight.

City topped their group in the earlier round, while Atletico were runners-up in theirs. At the weekend they warmed up for the tie with a routine victory over Burnley, while the Spanish side hammered Alaves to make it six straight wins in all competitions. Both Guardiola and opposite number Diego Simeone have faced heartache in the final of this competition with their current clubs, but City remain the favourites to go the distance this time - even if this will be a huge test for the Cityzens in the last eight.

Manchester City v Atlético Madrid: Champions League quarter-final ... (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Join Rob Smyth for updates as Diego Simeone's side return to Manchester after toppling United.

It’s Manchester City v Atletico Madrid, with the winners to face either Chelsea or Real Madrid in a semi-final which, whatever the permutation, will be loaded with meaning. The first leg of the quarter-final is at the Etihad tonight, with the second at the Wanda Metropolitano next Wednesday. City are strong favourites, for reasons that would be intelligence-insulting to explain, and all things being equal they will go through. But all things weren’t equal when Atletico put Guardiola’s Bayern out in the 2015-16 semi-final, or when they eliminated a rampant Liverpool two years ago, or when Pep was too funky by far against Spurs/Lyon/Chelsea.If Atletico can get out of Manchester with at worst a one-goal deficit, they will fancy their chances next week. They’ve won seven of their last eight games, and the eighth - a draw at home to Manchester United in the last 16 - ultimately led to victory. We want to impose our game but they are a good team - champions of Spain, and they have always had good results in Europe. They’re a tough opponent.“John [Stones] will play with Aymer in the centre and Nathan [will play at left-back]. We have players on the bench who can change the game - Gabi, Phil, Jack. But I decided to start with these guys today.”Manchester City’s Phil Foden (left) and Jack Grealish head out for the warm up. “Speaking of Football Weekly,” says Matt Burtz. “I’ve been a faithful listener for many years now, and I’ve always wondered if we’ll ever get to hear your dulcet tones as a panelist. But it’s the Withering Depths of Simeone’s sh!thousing Atletico that I’m looking forward to enjoying tonight.” It won’t be the same without Hector Herrera.

Can Pep Guardiola curb his overthinking to advance in his quest for an ever elusive Man City Champions League tile.

Manchester City: While City has close to a clean bill of health, Kyle Walker is suspended for the tie while Ruben Dias is still injured. This tournament has been a team effort for Atletico Madrid as they've struggled to score while being their typical stingy defensive selves, scoring and conceding nine goals in the competition thus far. In contrast to a Diego Simeone side that you typically know what you get, Guardiola needs to ensure that his team doesn't tactically self-sabotage as home favorites.

UCL Preview: Chelsea faces Real Madrid, Atletico visits Man City ... (SBI Soccer)

The UEFA Champions League field is down to eight clubs with the quarterfinal first legs set to kick off on Tuesday.

Villarreal has already claimed one major scalp in the UCL knockout stage, but now the La Liga side will have to stop one of Europe’s most consistent threats. Atletico Madrid has won six-consecutive matches across all competitions and will now prepare to eliminate a second Manchester club in this season’s tournament. Bayern Munich has won three of its last five matches across all competitions, scoring four goals or more in each of those victories. Robert Lewandowski remains one of the best scoring options in the world while other players such as Kingsley Coman, Serge Gantry, and Leroy Sane can all contrubute when needed. The Portuguese hosts have won three of their last five matches, eliminating Dutch club Ajax in the Round of 16. Jan Vertonghen and Nicolas Otamendi headline the backline and both have ample experience against Liverpool from their time in the Premier League. Man City has won five of its last seven matches, including league victories over rivals Manchester United, as well as Burnley and Everton. Riyad Mahrez leads the team with six UCL goals while Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling each have three apiece. Defending UCL winners Chelsea may be fighting for a top-four finish in the English Premier League, but will have to turn its attention to Real Madrid this week. The French striker scored twice on Saturday and will be eager to get after an inconsistent Chelsea defense. The U.S. men’s national team star scored against Los Blancos in last season’s semifinals and would bring another element to Chelsea’s attack, should Tuchel decide to use him. Christian Pulisic was not a part of the action for the Blues, but should be back available in attack. Current EPL leaders Manchester City faces a tough test with Atletico Madrid visiting the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday. Pep Guardiola’s side might have one eye on next weekend’s top-two clash with Liverpool, but can’t afford to overlook Diego Simeone’s squad this week.

It was another night that highlighted the quality of the Premier League’s top two—and there could be quite a few more to come, both domestically against each other in England and on the road to Paris, where their burgeoning rivalry could reach its climax. It was a triple substitution from Guardiola that led to the deadlock being broken, as Foden had been on the pitch for less than two minutes when he slid a pass through for Kevin De Bruyne to score with 20 minutes remaining. There was no particularly odd pick here, the only slightly surprising selections being the preference for Bernardo Silva over Phil Foden as the false nine and Nathan Ake being deployed at left back with João Cancelo on the right in the absence of the suspended Kyle Walker.

Benfica looked dangerous for a spell, but Reds goalkeeper Alisson dealt with their best chance, a shot by Everton, and Luis Diaz sealed the victory with a goal in the 87th minute. Four minutes into the second half, a blunder by Konate allowed Darwin Nuñez to pull back a goal for the hosts and bring the crowd back into the contest. While the Colchoneros would end the game with 29 percent possession and zero shots, they limited City to two shots on target and kept the hosts off the scoreboard until the 70th minute, when Kevin de Bruyne scored with a tremendous assist from late sub Phil Foden.

Manchester City Phil Foden foil Diego Simeone Atletico Madrid ... (ESPN)

With a return leg in Madrid and Liverpool looming, Phil Foden signaled to Pep Guardiola that he should start in Manchester City's upcoming gantlet.

I like to watch Manchester play, the patience they have to play." Almost immediately he picked up the ball in a tight space on the edge of the box, drew five Atletico defenders toward him and lifted his head to slip a pass through to De Bruyne. It was one of two outstanding moments of quality in the game, the other coming from Foden again when he danced his way down the byline to create another chance for De Bruyne. It might not be football to drool over, but Atletico have turned defending into an art form, and with two thirds of the game gone, City's best chance was an Aymeric Laporte header from a corner. Guardiola and Simeone wore the same long black coat on the touchline to guard against the Manchester rain, but their footballing styles could not have been more different. Had Foden stayed on the bench, City might not have found a way through Simeone's rigid game plan and would be heading to Spain next week with the tie on a knife edge. "A difficult game against a tough opponent, it's so difficult to find gaps," Guardiola said afterward.

Manchester City Finds Breakthrough Against Atlético Madrid (The New York Times)

Diego Simeone's Atlético Madrid hunkered down and defended in its Champions League quarterfinal at Manchester City. But a single goal might be enough to ...

It had one, possibly, in the second, though there is a very good chance that it was meant as a cross. It did not muster a shot on goal in the first half. And it almost worked here, too, against Guardiola’s latest masterpiece, a team that remains all but untouchable in the Premier League, a team that most likely ranks as the best in the world. And it is in those moments, too, that doubt is sowed in the mind of the opposition, when even a team as fine as Manchester City starts to second-guess itself, when it begins to wonder if it should be committing quite so many players forward. It is in those moments, those rare forays upfield, when an overworked defense has time to recover, to reorganize, to regroup. He would, privately, be pleased simply to have escaped from the Etihad with his side still in the tie. Or maybe it was that brief, fleeting and possibly accidental moment when the redoubtable Geoffrey Kondogbia burst into City’s half, looked up, and saw nothing in front of him except a couple of light blue jerseys and a broad swath of green. The style is, when it works, difficult to love but easy to admire. The Brazilian’s ennui could not — as it often can, during the course of both the domestic and the European seasons — be traced to Manchester City’s overwhelming superiority over its opposition, to its vast financial power, to its supercharged strength. Perhaps the best indication of how Diego Simeone, Atlético’s coach, intended to approach Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League quarterfinal came in its first second. There was nobody else in his half of the field. He had stared, squinting, into the distance, scanning for some threat on the horizon.

Manchester City vs. Atletico Madrid: Diego Simeone's plans fall flat ... (CBSSports.com)

Simeone has used these tactics to infuriate Pep Guardiola in the past, knocking Bayern Munich out at the Champions League semifinals six years ago, but ...

Atletico, meanwhile, fell into bad habits, subjecting Grealish to the most rough house of treatment in the closing stages. He did it with a quick dart and a slide rule pass, unleashing Kevin De Bruyne in behind to fizz a shot across Jan Oblak, firing the hosts into the lead in the tie. If they do, they will be lucky to escape with the same score as Tuesday night. If there was a brief moment where it seemed City's neuroses in this competition might get the better of them, it faded into insignificance set against those lengthy spells where it was apparent, Atleti could not just sit back and wait for something to happen. One could sense how tired Atletico were in their flurry of counter attacks early in the first half. The levee was only going to hold for so long. Better to have Bernardo Silva coming to the ball as a true false nine. "It was a very tactical game and each of us tried to impose our own game in this one." There is a tendency to look for higher meaning in such boring fare. He may well need favors from a City side that looked firmly in the groove tonight even if it never hit top gear. La Liga's reigning champions were lucky to escape the Etihad Stadium trailing only to Kevin De Bruyne's 70th minute goal after a game in which they had offered next to nothing beyond the small area in front of their box. In the end it did not.

When Man City met Atletico, Pep Guardiola and Diego Simeone did ... (ESPN.co.uk)

Don't be mad at Diego Simeone's defensive tactics, nor Pep Guardiola's overthinking. Tuesday night's game was two managers leaning into stereotypes.

And when they adopt diametrically opposed game plans and are (mostly) flawless, this is what you get: a stalemate decided in the blink of an eye. City's are passing, movement and winning the ball back quickly after losing it (something they didn't do often because they rarely lost the ball). Atletico's -- much as they'd like to become a bit more multifaceted -- are ultimately stout defending and organization. That may have been down to the fact that Zinchenko, who was on the bench, had not started a game in nearly a month and, understandably, may be weighed down by the horrors unfolding in his native Ukraine. When this happens, there are three ways to break the stalemate: a defensive error, a refereeing mistake or some unscripted individual brilliance. It was more the choice of leaving Phil Foden on the bench, moving Bernardo Silva up front and sticking Ilkay Gundogan in midfield. Both were really effective at what they do, and what we got was immovable object besting unstoppable force for most of the game. You expect teams to play their strengths, which is exactly what Simeone and Guardiola did. They failed to make a single attempt at goal throughout the game. It's not so much that with Joao Cancelo forced to play on the right due to Kyle Walker's suspension, he opted for Nathan Ake -- more of a center-back throughout his career -- at left-back instead of Zinchenko, City's first choice over the past few seasons. The "overthinking" charge doesn't come out of thin air -- his critics will bring up dropping Yaya Toure against Monaco in 2016-17, deploying Aymeric Laporte at left-back against Liverpool in 2017-18, leaving out Kevin De Bruyne against Spurs in 2018-19, switching to a back three with two holding midfielders against Lyon in 2019-20 and even going without a defensive midfielder in last year's final against Chelsea -- but you also need to view it in context. And yet here's the thing about cliches: Often they contain more than a kernel of truth. Anyone who has watched LaLiga over the past year or so will have seen Simeone try to wean Atleti off his "Cholista" roots in an effort to play more proactive, attacking football.
